What cool idea was wasted on a bad/unworthy story?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-29 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ever come across some form of media that has a really fucking cool concept, but it was otherwise bad so can't be taken seriously? Doesn't have to be the central concept, could be some kind of detail or world-building that was awesome. The story doesn't even have to be inherently bad, per se, just unworthy to get the deserved recognition for this cool idea. could be like... a really neat sci-fi invention in a dollar romance novel, a cool superpower in a gay erotic doujinshi, whatever.

I think American Horror Story has an overall great concept, telling a different horror story each season could be so cool and interesting but it typically falls flat, especially by the time you get to the finales.

Some of the individual story ideas are better then others, but every one of them has the issue of falling apart somewhere.

I also found Steven Universe to have some decent basic ideas but in the execution? Nah.

Out of curiosity, what's your beef with SU's storytelling? I'm pretty neutral to the show.

Eh, seasons 2 and 4 had the better endings and better over arching plots.

5 was kind of weak all around...but I still found it fun. And that guy who usually plays bad guys had the BEST character in that season. OMG.

Season 6 has been the worst imo. Like, the first half was great. I liked the documentary thing, but the second half...just...no. It was bad.

Obligatory Sword Art Online submission for this topic. I know SAO didn't invent the idea of virtual reality gaming or anything, but it had a lot going for it in development - nice attention to detail in the gaming itself, pretty art, a fantastic soundtrack. But whoever the hell wrote the actual plot decided rather than playing it straight, they were going to make a poorly-executed harem without trying to develop a plot at all, instead skipping around to harem scenes and then the end within the span of like 12 episodes. Which was a rush but then again, gotta get to that incesty imouto-chan plotline asap.

Oh man, I watched the first two or three episodes of SAO and I feel this so hard. I love the sort of concept of games/VR as "reality", like SAO or .hack or Star Ocean.

And there's so much to explore there, especially when it's presented as some kind of MMO. You could look at contemporary gaming culture and online culture (trolls, the benevolent overlord players who hand out freebies to newbs, NEETs, how groups of anonymous people organize themselves into societies, memes, ALL OF IT). You could play with game concepts, like does death just boot you from the game or do you die in real life, and does the distinction matter to the people you left behind in the game-world? And layers of reality, is an NPC a person if it's advanced enough to think and feel for itself, even if it's just lines of code? Plus all the fourth-wall stuff that you could play for comedy or for dramatic effect.

There's just SO MUCH that could be cool, but instead they made yet another shitty harem anime.

:(

Have there been any good animes about gaming? I swear every time I try one it's entirely directed at a male audience and they forget that women play games too.

What could be seen in early trailers/footage for what was still Final Fantasy Versus XIII back then and what is still there way back in the background if you squint and tilt your head in the finished game seems actually pretty great. But it's not actually in the game, and what they went for as far as plot and character development other than the main four guys are concerned is really pretty damn bad.

I also recently rewatched the Hobbit movies and damn, there are some genuinely great moments in them. It could have been so good. It was so terribly bad. Such a waste of potential.

The entire plot of Fire Emblem Fates. Especially the choice between your adoptive family and your biological family.

Haha I started playing one and got pretty far, and actually liked it for the most part (I played the Team Blondes version). But I got stuck at one of the later battles, and after failing ten times put it down and haven't tried again. Maybe I should be glad I didn't make it far enough to see the cards fall. I liked my adoptive family. Except for imouto-chan. But I really like the older sister and two brothers.

And of course, unless you Revelations, no matter what, Birthright is displayed as the Correct Path with Glorious Nihon triumphing and you with your Rightful Birth Family.

Gag

Batman Versus Superman.

It had all the cool potential in the world.

But the story they went with....

I think both Bats vs Supes and Suicide Squad had the problem of trying to tell us stories that you shouldn't be telling us when you're first introducing characters.

I don't care that these characters are iconic in comics, in the movie universe we literally don't know them. I don't know a god damn thing about Batfleck. I've had one movie with Superman and you kill him?

I mean outside of the movies just being messes in general, they are really trying to hard to rush us into this universe.

I really like Allmates in Dramatical Murder. Actually, the entire setting is pretty cool, including the Rhyme virtual reality game stuff. And Aoba's superpower of "destroying" people was really executed in an interesting way - I even found it really moving at times.

But hey, it's a hardcore porn BL game. Works for me, mind. But I still daydream about a serious console remake where you can actually play Rhyme and Rib, level up, use Aoba's power, infiltrate the evil dude's base, and fuck everyone rather than just scroll through the story. I guess the concept was seen as worthy enough to make an anime out of it (cutting out the gay, of course) but the anime was still pretty low-budget. I would throw tons of money at a PS4 action-adventure remake.

I always thought the battle system in Loveless (verbal battling, where they fight in pairs of Fighter and Sacrifice, and all the damage is taken by the Sacrifice) was cool and could be used in some interesting ways to tell interesting stories. It's a shame that Loveless doesn't really do it.

Re: What cool idea was wasted on a bad/unworthy story?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-29 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't thought about Loveless in ages (is it still going on or has it ended?), but the battle system was my favorite part of the series and I wish it had been more fighting and less questionable, messed up relationships.

I really liked the Wolves of Mercy Fall's take on werewolves. They are normal human beings when affected with a disease get turned into wolves when it's cold out. They only transform for a period of time before they permanently get turned into a wolf.

Too bad the series was very boring with insufferable characters.

Scream Queens falls under this for me.

The concept has been done before, of course. But what set it for me was that Channel wasn't the innocent girl in all of this. She was horrible most of the time (and she had actual reasons, like being raised by terrible parents who spoiled her) and people had actual reasons to hate her and the sorority (including the other Chanels). When it had great comedy moments they where genuinely great. Concept was good, execution was meh.

I think the idea behind the romcom Not Another Happy Ending sounds great on paper and would make a perfect romcom, but the way it was executed was...not great.

The 3rd gen of Tomb Raider.

Lets make a game where you play Laras first adventure! YAAAAY!

BUT let's throw out that tacky old Lara with the shoot first attitude, the hyper-masculine over confidence, the air of GSD, the over the top badassedness, and the huge tits. No-one could relate to that. Let's instead make her scared and hurt and in constant overwhelming danger, so people will want to protect her. FUCK YOOOOOOOOOU!

Still not over it. How do you get the core of the character so wrong? I remember playing as teenage Lara back in chronicles, I remember pissing my pants going up against the headless horseman demon. I remember thinking "it's OK, but I Lara is here, Lara will protect me". I didn't want to protect her. That's not the way it went. Not ever.

Still not over it. Still not over the fact that this is my Lara no. Still not over that this is the Lara that's getting a movie instead of the far superior 2nd generation Lara with the Keeley Hawes voice. We lost somthing great.
