128: I've read the OP's replies to comments so I can see where s/he's coming from, but there's one comment I don't think anyone's made yet and I think might help. Or annoy. Never know.

RGU uses the old prince/princess stereotype very heavily, and that almost necessitates heterosexual romantic baggage. I can understand why the Utena/Anthy subtext was added to counterbalance the heterosexual overtones because there simply wasn't a way to remove the romance altogether. Part of being a prince is finding your princess, and vice versa. One of the childhood myths we have to break ourselves out of is that we have to be one or the other, and that's something Utena gets trapped in over and over again in a heterosexual context. Removing that would have undermined the whole series by disregarding a major part of the stereotypical context it was based in. However, having Anthy as an adult person making her own choices choose to follow Utena counterbalances all the previous heterosexual content by lifting that single non-heterosexual relationship above the rest as an example of healthy and attainable adult romance. It wasn't so much a statement about the necessity of romance as an continuation of the major theme of adulthood/childhood. It was just done in a way that the spare plot-threads from the previous heterosexual relationships were cut at the same time. If Anthy and Utena hadn't been presented as a possible couple, would there still be romantic ties to Ohtori that would have kept bringing the post-series plot (that little image in the back of every viewer's head about what happens after the credits) back there, when it's supposed to be a clean break. I think they probably made it as subtle as possible without removing the meaning, but it really was a necessary decision.

105. I think the thing that really bugs me about him is his pretentiousness. Don't get me wrong, I adored Lady in the Water, but really, casting yourself as a writer whose work is so ground-breaking and controversial that he'll eventually be martyred for his beliefs? You've gotta be kidding me.

I do like his movies though, and I do get there's more to his movies than "WHAT A TWIST :D". I'm rather looking forward to The Happening myself~
