128: I really don't think that's the point. It's more about finding respect and strength for onesself and having a relationship (or friendship for that matter; I never really saw their development as a romance, even in the film) that isn't codependent and based on exchange of power. Remember that in the end, it was Anthy who walked out for herself, because she realized her own worth.


166: I'm kind of inclined to agree. Angela Lansbury's Lovett is the best Lovett.

I do think that's one of the points the show is making, absolutely, but the director's said he doesn't do hetero pairings because they become too distracting to the plot, and so puts same-sex subtext between characters. Evidently that's somehow less distracting. I felt like it didn't need any subtext at all and that implying that Anthy was leaving to find Utena and live happily ever after seemed to weaken the ending, at least for me. Until that point, it's absolutely amazing.

(Having just gotten into the series, I think I'll just enjoy it over here in this corner now and stay as far away from the fandom as possible. D:)

128. How does whether or not you want to see their relationship as friendship/platonic love/sexual love make their story any more or less empowering? From the beginning of the story, instead of waiting for a prince to come and save her, Utena became her own prince and saved herself. And finally (though Utena's love, regardless of what sort of love it was, clearly helped her to do so, just as hers had Utena) Anthy saved herself too. And then Anthy goes off to (maybe) find Utena again in the world outside Ohtori Academy, because, hey, once you are a free agent and not a Rose Bride, you can follow your own desires wherever they lead.

Moreover, whether or not you want to think they were friends or lovers or whatever you please, I wouldn't call their relationship Romantic. Maybe they'll end up together, maybe they won't--and if they don't, I don't see either one of them wasting away in a tower and never loving again. But wanting to love or be loved in itself, or needing and fostering genuine connections of all kinds with other people, doesn't make you weak and certainly isn't inherently unfeminist.
