I'm an atheist and I say Goddammit a lot. An awful lot. I also use God, Jesus, and whatever other deities I feel like invoking with regularity as exclamations of frustration or surprise.

Just because one doesn't believe in God doesn't mean the concept can't be borrowed to express oneself. It's part of our culture (and, like, every culture ever), and it gets the point across.

125) To be fair though, Ed does mention God a few times (usually when he's talking about how much God hates him). But I feel like that's mostly due to the wake-up call he received when he realized that alchemy can't make people into gods themselves (i.e. the whole cheating death thing). I think part of Ed feels like there's something bigger out there, but his own solid belief in science and, like you said, his atheistic society have made it so he either ignores that or just plain doesn't care. However, since Russell has obviously not experienced anything close to what Ed has, I can believe that he wouldn't use God's name.
