I cannot tell you how happy it made me to see a Mebius secret on F!S.

Anyway, I can tell where you're coming from, but Ryuu just... well, has Ryuu Rage every now and then. He was caught up in the moment and took it out on Mebi/the Ultras, and like any other person, learns in the end that he was wrong. I think the fact that it was never mentioned again is more to blame on the writers focusing on other plots more than Ryuu himself, as it's evidenced later in the show that he (and the rest of the team, of course) appreciate the help they get.

Though that tact and captain complex part is pretty on the dot. xD

The Meitsu incidents stand out as well. Aaaargh, if he hadn't drawn that gun...! To me he never seemed to settle down and think once in a while, which might've helped his case somewhat.

It's like a parody of all the childish anime series from the past, that's all it was ever meant to be. That's why it's over the top, like Gunbuster and Diebuster, and all the other series from the 80s like GGG and G-Gundam and idk stuff like Ashita no Joe too. If i remember correctly even Imaishi said so himself. The only reason most of the TTGL fandom think it's so unique is because they haven't seen a lot of what it was probably parodying.

And Kamina's line is symbolic, because right before he died, he finally said to Simon to not believe in him who believes in Simon, but for Simon to believe in himself.
It's all about growth, yes it's childish and stupid at the beginning, but it's meant to be. There's an interview somewhere where one of the directors spoke of how at the beginning of your life you depend on others and doing your best all the time will guarantee you what you want, but once you grow older you realise that's not always the case.

Your complaints are pretty much the reason why everyone loves it.
Sorry it wasn't your thing though, each to their own 8)

It wasn't meant to be a parody. The writer himself said he wanted to tell a serious story in a lighthearted fashion. Despite the presentation, the whole staff wanted it to be a sincere project. I don't think it's "unique", but I do think it is refreshing; even for the Super Robot genre. I personally enjoy over-the-top shows such as Diebuster, but Gurren-Lagann itself stands out due to its own heart.
