I've been getting cranky about this recently myself because I've been doing a lot of fanart browsing, and--Japanese fanartists are so clear about not wanting their fanart used without their permission. They plaster their desires all over their pages in English. Why is it so goddamn hard to have the common courtesy to say, "Okay, I see you don't want your fanart used this way, I'll respect that"?

I don't do anything like that, but I get how you feel about your friends not being into anime. I have really different interests than my RL friends (save for one). None of them are into video games or anime and sometimes it can be a little frustrating. I have my online friends to chat about this stuff with, but sometimes it'd be nice to be able to say "yeah, I watched this great anime series" and not have someone look at me like I'm nuts.

I think in my case it's an age thing. People my age tend to think that cartoons are for kids, unless they're things like Robot Chicken or shorts you see at Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation. Video games are the same thing -- most people my age see them as something that they did as children and that shouldn't be messed with as adults. Which is funny, considering the fact that most video games released nowadays are M rated.

Anyway, sorry OP, tl;dr is tl;dr

I hope you meet some cool people who are into what you're into.

116: What fandom is that? Is that Ouran High School Host Club? Is that supposed to be Tamaki and Haruhi?

141: Forget, pretty much never, because some think that if you make a mistake you should be kicked out of fandom full stop, and they will bring up that mistake you made in all circumstances in which your name comes up. Make a big enough mistake and you will make enemies who will become so frustrated with your continued existence that they will vibrate themselves into another dimension.

Forgive, in what I've seen, only if you are willing to make an enormous melodramatic apology in very abject terms so that the judges can congratulate themselves on having brought you down to your knees, while also having another source of dramatic wank to make fun of.

That said, it isn't that difficult to not make a really big mistake like that. You just have to stop and think before you post, not worry about who's "in" and who's "out" in fandom, and do what you like and not worry about what you don't like. Fly under the radar and you'll still have friends and readers for your fic but you won't be important enough (read: inspire enough jealousy) for anyone to make hay about your occasional lapses of judgment, which, hello, everyone has.

Believe me, once you've been through one huge wank, however tangentially, you don't want to be involved in another one. Unless of course you're just wanky, in which case, good luck to you!

I think this is one of the first intelligent replies I've seen to this secret. I've just been reading the past few pages and all the people going "GOD, WAY TO MISS THE POINT" and thinking "uh, guys? Considering that line is the single most well-known, often-repeated sound byte from your show, then yeah, I think that's what people who haven't seen the show are going to end up judging it on!"
