105. I've been suicidally depressed before, and I recovered with the help of my friends and family (not to mention that I got up and decided to make my own lifestyle changes.)

While I don't personally identify with the '____ saved my life' secrets, a key point to understand is that a lot of people don't have the resources or help to get through shit like depression on their own. That's why they choose things like anime, manga, or TV shows to help them hang on. And even if they do have others willing to help them, sometimes things on shows give them hope in a different way.

That said, hanging on because of those above mentioned things isn't healthy, and unfortunately, when those things end/cease to give the person hope, they'll be back to their old mindsets again unless they have some kind of other network of support. But it's a temporary relief, at the very least, until they can get to a point where they can really help themselves.

105. I wouldn't go as far as to say fandom saved my life, but it did help me get through an extremely tough period in my life. Television and books have always been my comforts. If it weren't for the crappy DiC dub of Sailor Moon back in 1998 or so, I wouldn't have made a bunch of the friends I have today. I don't imagine that Usagi is me, but she gave me hope as a kid because I could relate to her, and I therefore grew very attached to Sailor Moon as a whole. That's one of the reasons I still love it as much as I do today. It gave me hope and confidence and helped me make friends. Although I did begin loving myself, it was fandom that helped me start loving myself. So although you have a good point, perhaps you should think about it from the other angle as well. Not everyone claims fandom saved their life because all they did was stay alive for the next episode.

113. I end up thinking the same thing too, but I don't like saying it because I think it makes me sound elitist. It's just that... so many American-manga styles suck. Badly. It's one of the reasons I don't like Tokyopop. "hay lets take this crappily drawn american manga knockoff and call it manga :B"

122. RIP Miyuki. ;_; She was in one of the first Myus I watched.

134. HELL YEAH. I never realized that I was subconciously shipping Michael Ian Black/Hal Sparks throughout the whole thing. *still needs to see the first four years of I Love the New Millennium*

Re: 113

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-07-02 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
See, that's not a big deal. It's not elitist to personally not like the drawing style- it's the difference for not picking up manhwa because you don't like the particular stylistic differences it usually has (as one of my friends), and just refusing to try it and mocking it because it's "omg not Japanese." I agree that most of the stuff that's coming out is really pretty bad. Return to Labyrinth (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/multimoog/labyrinth/2.gif) was particularly hideous (not-so-great webcomic quality with a misleadingly gorgeous cover (http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/1598167251.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V62582744_.jpg)), but I personally enjoyed Shutterbox (http://www.sfolse.net/manga_analysis/shoujo/shutterbox-1-near-beginning.jpg) and wish it was being released a little faster (lol my attention span).

Really, if something's crappily drawn, it's crappily drawn. But I think some Japanese manga isn't that well drawn, and some American and Korean manga/manhwa styles are done well. And personally, for me, if something has a style I'm "meh" about by I like/love the story, I don't care about the drawing style- but something can be absolutely gorgeous and bore me to tears, and in that case I think it's not too well done (koff koff Alichino koff). So... *shrugs* Personal opinion, yeah? I just go ":/" at the fact that they're lambasting everything not-Japanese as "lazy copying" that doesn't deserve to be professional and isn't good enough unless it's coming out of Japan. Mergh.

Not everyone has a life (they personally feel is) worth living, so STFU and let people have what makes it so for them. Some people live for their next drink or hit, but omg not a fictional story...

132. ...Right.

Because no other manga artist in the history of manga artists has ever used that sort of mosaic HERE ARE ALL MY CHARACTERS picture.

141. Definitely common sense.

147. I gotta say, OP, that's pretty awesomely funny. Whether you meant to or not, your secret certainly lifted my spirits just now. ♥

154. Aaaah, if you get recs, send them my way! I'd give my right arm for good BotI fanworks in general.

138. Aaaaah new Kio Shimoku how can I learn moar plzzzzz

155. Do you think he'll laugh at you?

158. Town music is like that sometimes. I still hum the Fisherman's Horizon theme to myself for comfort, for example.

102. I'm imagining the shipwars now. "Heretic! Judas/Jesus OTP!" "Peter/Jesus, there's no DENYING it, geddit?" (L'enfer ne peut attaquer les païens.)
105. I dunno - look at 110. Any reason to stick around is a good enough reason. I had a couple of really bad days last week, but (amongst many more important things, like not destroying my loved ones) I was able to encourage myself to hold on by reminding myself that a premature departure now would mean missing the Doctor Who finale.
124. Am I the first person to inquire as to whether you are referring to the camel? (I doubt it.)
151. I have recently solved exactly that problem by starting to co-write a novel with one of my RP partners. :-)

124

(Anonymous) 2008-07-08 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a Ringwraith from the LOTR universe XD
There were a couple people who thought it was a camel as well (try page 2) ;)

I could not disagree with you more.

Fandom has changed me and "saved my life" as is popular to say on here. But because of that it doesn't mean I live as a shut in and never do anything but live and breath said fandom. I look at fandom much the same way I look at religion. I identify with a character, his beliefs and ideals. He inspires me to like myself and to want to be the best me I can be.

He is my hero.

And I also can't tell you the amount of fake hurtful people I have gotten out of my life now that I have really accepted myself and how many really genuine friends I have made because of this fandom.

Fandom is not healthy for everyone (but neither is just about anything) but don't generalize like you have. Luffy did save me and I am not ashamed by that fact.

Are you me?

No. Really.

Are you? Cuz I swear if Hisoka didn't say that particular line about the kind of woman Anotsu would stay with (or some such), my shipping gears for this series would never have started.

Sadly, there are very few fanfics available; most of them have already been posted a few pages back. I'll post some japanese Anotsu/Rin fanart sites I've found later when I get home.

Hisoka started it, YES. XD

That would be lovely. Thank you. /waits eagerly/

109 - Please be a troll. If not, you're a bad fan and you should feel bad. You know why fan comics are made? In tribute to the original work. Those comics are only amusing because the characters *aren't* 'cute and funny', that's the joke.

117 - Holy shit, what is this? Pedo senses are tingling.

155 - You and thousands of others, honey

158 - IAWTC, it actually brings a happy tear of nostalgia to my eye. ♥ ♥

Wait a minute, though, wait a minute. What exactly is so bad about first getting into a series because you see something for it that's cute/makes you laugh, and so you look into it? Even if it is totally different from what you were first lead to believe, how does that make you a bad fan?

You all should play it, first because it's a great game, secondly because I would personally be overjoyed to be able to say that some people got into it for the intrigue, some for the espionage gameplay, and some for Snake's ass.

Also:

132) Don't dislike Reborn for the imaginative picture, dislike it for its unimaginative and dull storylines!

113- Since when are personal style and manga style mutually exclusive things? :/

Because you're only not being a lazy, unprofessional, untalented copycat if you're drawing like Jack Kirby instead of Rumiko Takahashi, apparently.

I thought that was Trevor (http://www.ifc.com/static/img/series/wkuk/about_trevor.jpg) and Zach (http://www.ifc.com/static/img/series/wkuk/about_zach.jpg) and I was really excited. Is there a fandom for the The Whitest Kids U'Know?

[identity profile] slatterly.livejournal.com 2008-07-02 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
105. Okay, first? Some people make entertainment because they like to. Not solely for the money. SHOCKING! I know! Second: I can't even list all the things that are wrong with your second assumption aaaugh. If someone has lost meaning in their own life, is it so wrong to look for it in something else? Sometimes it's hard to believe in yourself. And you can't just fix that by willing it better again, sometimes you need a crutch, however 'silly' it might seem to someone else.

141. fdfkdjeruaf AGYAR.

OH MY GOD. I fucking love 10th Kingdom! I just bought the DVDs of the entire series and reawakened my epic love for it! I keep meaning to post a secret about it...

... Wait, Arran, is this secret yours? You dirty Bluebell-loving troll-fucker you?

Oh well. :D

Seriously, I shipped that like burning the whole time. Which is majorly hypocritical since I froth at the mouth when looking for 10th Kingdom fan fiction and finding WendellXWolf slash (damnit, Wolf is STRAIGHT FOREVER FOR VIRGINIA adnjkgjdf), even though TonyXWendell is only slightly less OOC.

:D I love having the emotional maturity of the ten year old I was when I watched this series.
