The main crew of the Enterprise gets to go on vacation! This could either be really funny or really boring, and unfortunately, it's closer to the latter. But at least they got to wear some different outfits for once.

Good Netflix shows that fly under the radar...

So in other words, NOT stuff like Stranger Things, anything Marvel, The Crown, Orange Is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or any previously popular shows/movies that are now on Netflix. What good shows do you like that aren't getting as much buzz?

Movie Club Discussion!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2018-01-06 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Today we are discussing The Last Unicorn!

Here are some questions to start us off.

1. What was your initial reaction when the movie started? How did that change by the end of the movie?

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

3. What was your favorite scenes? Your least favorite? Why?

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

5. What did you think of the production (cinematography, editing, costuming, etc.)?

Feel free to talk about anything else as well!

1. I've never seen it before and didn't know stuff about it. The opening song definitely reminded me of stuff like The Labyrinth. Meh, I didn't really love the film. It was okay but definitely not something I'd watch again. I did like that it didn't end with the cliche of the unicorn staying human to be with her "true love".

2. Schmendrick was my favorite character. He was such a fucking dork. I loved his "second rate pickpocket" line. The butterfly. I hated that annoying, singing fucker.

3. My favorite scene was the breakout one. I was worried the animals would not be rescued, buy thankfully the unicorn activated her magical ability to open locks that she could not use before for some reason. Also, the Harpy was badass. My least favorite was the butterfly scene. I just really, really disliked him.

4. The music cracked me the fuck up. It could be more 80s if it tried. Especially all the songs that explained what was going on the movie. I AM SO HUNGRY!! NOW IT IS RAINING! I GOTTA WALK FOREVER DOWN THE MAN'S ROAD!

5. The animation is super distinctive to me because my littler brother was obsessed with The Hobbit growing up. Honestly, I really don't like it. But man, that voice cast was stacked!

Man, I forgot that back in the day that they could show titties to kids in cartoons. Including weird tree titties. I did find it interesting that they had so many different mythologies (like the Chinese dragon instead of a Western one).

1. The first time I saw this movie I was 9, and fucking OBSESSED with unicorns. I mean, I had unicorn shirts, unicorn stickers on everything, Lisa Frank unicorn folders, a unicorn bike. I didn't read the book until I was around twenty-five, though, and on seeing the movie after reading the book I think there's something sad about the inability to put that kinda gentle, delicate whimsical prose into picture. But my inner 9-year-old still shrieks with glee throughout the whole film.

2. I have the biggest soft spot for Molly Grue. She's just... fantastic. I love how she's simultaneously so cynical and hopeful. I'm not sure I have a least favorite? Maybe Mommy Fortuna? But I still really like her even though she's a dick.

3. Fave: "It would be the last unicorn that came to Molly Grue." Re: Molly is fantastic. Least: NOW THAT I'M A WOMAAAAAAAAAAN

4. I either cringe or laugh every time someone starts singing. Sometimes both. Sometimes I throw popcorn at the screen in disgust. (NOW THAT I'M A WOMAAAAAAAAAN)

5. Overall I think it's a beautiful movie, and I love that Beagle did the script himself. The movie version of the unicorn is the only way I can picture her in my head. She's pretty much perfect. If I could find a way to replace the soundtrack I'd be the happiest person in the world. Or at least replace Now That I'm a Woman.

I've bought this movie on VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray. My DVD and Blu-Ray are signed by Beagle, as is my hardcover copy of the book. I'm, like, ridiculously biased.

I confess I didn't watch this for movie club and haven't seen in in years, but want to tell a story:

My parents took me to see this in the theater. I had just turned three and I remember nothing of the experience. According to my parents, though, I was very quiet as we were leaving the theater and getting into the car, but when they turned to me in the back seat and asked how I liked the movie, I BURST INTO TEARS because it affected me so much. Again, I don't remember any of that, including crying, but I guess I really liked it? I was pretty obsessed with unicorns over the next several years, so I wonder if this was what sparked that or if I loved it because I already loved unicorns.

From seeing it again later on video, I remember thinking that the tree that falls in love with Schmendrick was scary. I think I was afraid it would crush him.

I also really loved the theme song.

1. What was your initial reaction when the movie started? How did that change by the end of the movie?

(A reaction from my first time (just after it came out, yes I am that old), not this most recent rewatch..) Honestly, I thought it looked boring and cheesy (if pretty)...but I really got into it by the end.

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

Favorite - the skeleton guarding the passageway - Rene Auberjonois' performance was amazing and the empty wine bottle was a perfect blend of absurd and tragic. He's the one that's always stuck with me...

Least - Haggard...he's...boring. Too sympathetic to be a truly hatable villain, not sympathetic enough to actually like him. He's a useful plot engine, but not much to speak of as a character.

3. What was your favorite scenes? Your least favorite? Why?

Favorite - the skeleton scene, of course - see my explanation for why he's my favourite character. Also, the Red Bull running the unicorns into the sea was a beautiful (if sad) visual.

Least - everything before reaching Mommy Fortuna's circus. Just could not get into it until then, on first watch, though having the 'I really like this movie' factor helps on more recent watches. Still pay less attention until the circus.

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

I honestly can't even remember if there was a score per se, even after multiple watchings. I mean, I assume there was, but it sticks with me about as well as teflon makeup. The vocal songs are...ok, but not to my taste at all.

5. What did you think of the production (cinematography, editing, costuming, etc.)?

The design work was fabulous - I don't think all of the designs actually hit (oh, lord, the butterfly), but it's a great range from beautiful (the unicorns are so pretty, including 'Amalthia' in her human form) to grotesque (that goddamn harpy, man).

It's one of those movies I rewatch every couple years, or at least have for the last 15 years or so since buying a copy...before that I'd watch it whenever it was on TV.

I've been meaning to watch this one for a while. I loved the opening song. And the unicorn was beautiful. The butterfly was annoying though. I liked the movie enough that I'm going to read the book.

My favorite was the unicorn, especially at the beginning. Schmendrick is fun. I like their little crew; it's different from the standard quest group. Least fave is the King and Lir. They're kinda bland.

My favorite were the circus scenes. Least favorite was after they reached the castle. It got boring; she's just staring at the sea.

I loved the opening song and the narrative songs. I liked the singer's voice. I didn't like the parts where the character's sang. It seemed unnecessary.

The animation was definitely aged, but the unicorns were beautiful. I loved the voice acting!

I also loved the world in general. There wasn't much info but I liked what there was. I want more stories in that setting.
