118. I'm pretty much convinced that Xavin and Teddy will save their teams in the end.

156. I honestly feel BSG is feel anti-feminist that most other Sci-Fi series. The women all seem pretty equal in society and able to achieve just about anything. Sure, they might be really pretty and get all tortured, but who in that show doesn't end up that way in one place or another?

135: Hell, why stop there? Giant AI orgy! GlaDOS, WOPR, HAL 9000, SAL 9000 (Hal's "sister", from 2010), KITT from Knight Rider, Edgar from Electric Dreams, and a bunch of others from movies/games/series' that I haven't seen.

144: Don't feel bad. My inner fledgling linguistics geek finds that much too amusing too.

157: Personally, I'd rather be a reverse trap. Alas, my boobs are way too big for that.

Not!secret #2: I probably should not find the mental image of Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Jack Harkness having a swordfight to the death as awesome as I do.

AWESOME SECRET IS AWESOME.

(I don't even ship RPF - I just watch too much TV news.)

111- I've only ever seen one episode, but I was impressed! I wasn't expecting the depth that Medabots seemed to have judging from that once episode.

112- I love you; I want to hug you to pieces; I am going to start doing that now. You are made of love and awesome.

129- It's tough, but as long as there is love, honesty and trust, it can work. Keep trying; you'll find people who understand and love you.

151- No worries, mate. No matter what, he's still laughing and making people laugh, wherever he is.

155- Playing the Sly games has made me want to get good at climbing and pickpocketing. I'm not kidding; Sly is seriously inspiring me to become a pickpocket.

[identity profile] julian-black.livejournal.com 2008-07-04 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, you fail.

The Da Vinci Code and Eragon have both received similar rakings over the coals from readers disgusted that books so low in quality should be so ridiculously popular. Hell, I remember when The Bridges of Madison County and The Celestine Prophecy were simultaneously insanely popular and widely scorned for being shit. And all of the authors responsible for those crappy books are...[drumroll]...male.

Stephenie Meyer is a lousy writer. Neither her sex nor her success negate that fact, and pointing and laughing at her lack of ability is not misogyny.

You want misogyny? You can find plenty of that in the Twilight books themselves. Look at Bella, that moping dullard; she has no passion or interest in anything at all, and no evident plans for her future--until she lays eyes on Edward. Then her whole existence becomes centered around him. When he leaves, her life is so empty that Meyer resorts to blank pages signifying the next few months, because without Edward, Bella might as well not exist. To manipulate him into coming back to her, she takes incredibly stupid risks that could get her killed--but if he doesn't come back, she might as well be dead anyway.

Bella Swan is a woman who only comes to life because of a man (who happens to be manipulative and controlling, and could easily kill her in a weak moment). She cannot continue to live in his absence, and has no real interests in anything other than him. This is portrayed as true, passionate love.

And you're calling SMeyer's critics misogynistic? Jesus.

No, of course the fans don't own it in any technical or legal way; That much should be obvious. But those kind distinctions are about money. What's ridiculous is creators trying to dictate how the public thinks about whatever it is they've created. The simple fact is you can't stop people from thinking "that part never happened" or "so-and-so is gay" and trying to do so is futile. There are many perfectly valid schools of criticism that don't take the author's views into account at all. When you turn a creative work over to the public you don't give up ownership, but you do give up a certain amount of control.

Re: 130

(Anonymous) 2008-07-04 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You own your opinions on said thing, yes. Having an opinion on something is one thing, that's always going to happen. That's why publishing requires some thick skin. Everyone is going to have a different view on your work and some might hate it.

But you will never own the characters, not ever. Not yours.
An author is perfectly within their rights to tell you: not in my sandbox, no you don't, not allowed. They can tell you, no Fan-Fiction, please. And they are well within their rights.

113. AUDIOSURF FOR THE WIN.
But yeah, thats pretty lame...
come on man, even I can beat leet ninja.
150. N-no. just no.
The Boosh is more fantasy, more fun.
[And yeah I liked them before they were cool.]

[identity profile] legit.livejournal.com 2008-07-04 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
116. Why not? I think it'd do pretty good also~

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-07-04 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
117) Your F-list is full of asshats. I mean, what the hell kind of logic is that? And what a crappy thing to say to a friend.

124) I laughed way too long at that.

129) The sad truth is that there is no way to make the relationships equal, and everyone knows they aren't equal. Few people are willing to be the odd man out for long -- and that's assuming it's a true love triangle where your lovers are also in love with each other. If they are competing for your time and affection, it's even more sucky. You get twice the affection, but they each only get half. Some people can make it work, so long as you choose partners who are also naturally polyamorous.

145) You pretty much have to be a bit of a geek to overlook the low budget effects and dated fashions. Still if you can do that, the stories are as good back then as they are today.

148) Uh... you kinda went wide of the mark with the last paragraph. It's actually possible to intensely dislike a work of fiction without being a woman hater. Those two things aren't even remotely related. Up to the last paragraph though you had a point. There isn't much point in going on endlessly about how much you hate a book. I decided not to read it because pure, chaste, vanilla romances don't interest me at all, and that appears to be all the book offers.

152) Well, on an equally shallow note, I'll point out that we don't know how old she was when she stopped being his companion.

156) You know sometimes feminism just seems to be more rigidly patriarchal than what it's fighting against. Women can't be sweet, because that means they are just being stereotypical help-mate, they can't be strong, because then they are ballbusters. There's simply no depiction of women that will ever be right enough. If feminism makes you, as a woman, feel guilty for enjoying a show, then it's not being very supportive of women.

I don't care if you don't want to watch it (although you're missing out hardcore), just please respect the fact that you wouldn't have NuWho without Classic Who. So many NuWho fans seem to love to hang shit on the old series even though they couldn't name any of the first eight Doctors.

150

[identity profile] charliequinn.livejournal.com 2008-07-04 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree.

I loved the Boosh on stage (Mighty, Arctic and Auto), but their TV show? Just... no.

151

(Anonymous) 2008-07-04 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
Don't you worry, he didn't go to Hell (which, by the way, is a pretty weird way of spelling Tartaros, but whatever). After all, he didn't get buried with the proper fee, so he never even made it across the Styx.

112 - That is so adorable :)

112. That's one of the most lovely secrets I've ever seen :) Good for you.

143. Y'know, I really wanted to be all smug and go "Oh, Hollywood names do nothing for me, I'm all 'bout the director" ... ... and then I realised that I'd forced all my friends to watch Night Watch (and then Day Watch, though it wasn't as good) and I now have no-one to feel smug towards :( Eh, curse me and my share-the-love attitude...

122, 136, 137, 145, 148.

[identity profile] mariafiona.livejournal.com 2008-07-04 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
122. I've only read the first GG book and seen three episodes of the TV series, but yeah, the two are so different from each other. It's a good kind of different, though, so I'm interested in how both the book and the TV series turn out.
136. Well, when I watch the Death Note anime, I sometimes hear Suou Tamaki instead of Light, and it kind of kills the mood a little.
137. I ship Zetsubou/Everyone. Including Chiri. Dear Everyone Who Makes I Ship It Secrets: You are not alone. Seriously.
145. Well. I sort of don't want to either. Because I don't have enough time for it.
148. ...wait, what? I hate Twilight, therefore I am a misogynist? I don't see the logic behind your argument there.

[identity profile] ellivader.livejournal.com 2008-07-04 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
127. Is that a fetish for stubble or for Alan Davis? xD ♥

145. I don't, either. Looks a little... Crap. That being said, I need to watch some 'new' episodes. o3o

110, because anybody who doesn't like this character I like = dumb is a really great way to get people to engage in conversation with you.

I am so surprised people aren't falling over themselves to discuss it!

/sarcasm (as if it wasn't obvious)

120, Awesome secret is awesome. Seriously, you've made my day!

148, On what planet does that logic make sense? Maybe the hate the book gets is proportional to its popularity (i.e. the more people blather on about it, the more people react with WTF? How can all these people like this shite?).

You know the phrase 'when in Rome'? You're on Earth, use Earth logic please.

just because it's on bestseller list, has a fandom and is bad, doesn't mean it justifies people going on and on about how bad it is. But just look at this post's commenst. People keep ranting about how bad it is, despite the secret actually calling it bad writing.

The OP knows it's bad, the commenters know that the OP knows it's bad and yet they keep hammering that point like the OP is the biggest Twilight fan that ever lived. That might not be misogynist jealousy at work, but it's a bit suspect if you ask me.

116. Though I'd love it coming here, I think I'd rather have a straight to DVD release. Mainly because of the jokes and what not... I think instead of butchering it up (removing jokes and possibly even other things), just let it have a DVD release only. I'd still buy it with or without it being put on AS.

121. Oh gods yes ;-; I cried so many girly-girl tears when watching this drama.

112, 117, 121, 126, 127, 130, 131, 133, 135, 149, 145, 148, 152, 157, 158

112. Thank you, op. This secret made my day.

117. I wish I knew where these 'crying uke' stereotypes were at in fiction. I guess I'm just selective enough in my reading, since I don't have a lot of time to fill it with shit, that I'm just not seeing it.

121. yes. laughing at you because no one else EVER has had ANYTHING touch them or affect them. you are an anomoly, a freak of nature, a special and unique snowflake.

126. What or who is a yoru?

127. ugh. scraggly beards.

129. because people don't work in real life like they do in fiction? because being in a three way love relationship takes work to keep one partner from feeling left out?

130. Fucking word!

131. Because it's all the same, don't you know, all the same degree of wrong and right. There are no shades of gray and there are no such thing as personal preferences. Please, keep listening to the peer group.

Clear your throat and repeat after me. Baaaaaaa...

133. wow, fucked up priorities much?

135. I am intrigued and would like to subscribe to your newsletter, please.

139. Why is this even a secret? *sighs* The fans of that game are the most insecure people I've ever had witness to deal with.

145. while I don't care what the old school fans of my flist think, this is something I've been saying for a while. you aren't alone.

148. Absolutely. because no one has never ever hated on a book because they believed it to be bad writing and don't understand the poor taste people exhibit in loving it so much. it must be that they all hate women!

sad that that is the rallying cry, right behind "OMG U H8 SLASH/YAOI? U HOMOPHOBE!" instead of people just having personal preferences and being vocal about them after being bludgeoned in the head with them for so long.

152. As long as you realize that it's petty and shallow, it's all good.

157. a what? I don't get it.

158. Except he was based on a video game and therefore didn't really fall prey to 'anime cliche'?
