132 As I said previously, wait until you're truly suicidal, and at that point no cartoon can save you from taking that step. It's like someone else inside you just comes alive and tells you that you have to die, and you have no utter control over it.
136 That guy will ALWAYS be Shuya to me. (Well, besides the real Shuya in the book, who's like a million times better.)
151 I seriously doubt that if Hell exists, Carlin went there.
156 Well, look at it this way, even if they are still being compromised in their gender roles, they're still more realistic female characters than 99% of what you see in tv and movies.

101. Awww! I think that's what I want to do, too. (...Which makes me feel better since he's 14.)

112. That's awesome! That's a great way to look at the world...now I want to try that sometime.

148. Um. Harry Potter was written by a woman, too.

135. HAL/GLaDOS is better.

And when you apply a set of brilliantly tortured logical paths (http://orawnzva.livejournal.com/60986.html) and two great filk songs to it, it gets even better.

148

[identity profile] khym-chanur.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt that it has much to do with misogyny. Compare the situation to JKR and the Harry Potter series. Ignoring the "HP is Satanic because it promotes witchcraft" crowd, there are a lot of people who vocally hate JKR, but the vast majority of them are people who used to be fans and didn't like the way she handled the last two books, thought she was rude in her interviews, and/or didn't like her suing SVA when he tried to publish the HP Lexicon. People who were never fans and aren't anti-witchcraft might occasionally gripe "my favorite fantasy series is so much better than HP, why couldn't it be this popular", but they don't hate on it the way that many non-Twilight fans hate on Twilight.

Re: 148

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Who is SVA and what about this HP Lexicon? I'm horribly curious why she would sue over something like that.

148 : I think that's a really lame and immature reason for liking a series or an author. It's not even: it amuses me or I read it for the epic lulz, or it makes me forget my problems for a couple of hours. As a person my view on the Twilight series was that the writing was bad and the characters bored me to death. If I wanted to slip into a coma I'd read it, but other than that I can't. But you, you're essentially saying:

I like it because it's gets wanked on the internet!

And that's just lame, sorry.

156: Oh god, I stamp all over shows if I don't think they're feminist enough or the women are just in to support the men, but I think Doctor Who does a really good job of giving them an equal standing with the Doctor. Also I can't say the same for BSG though, to many blondes, not enough likeable spunk. D':

102 - clever use of Joy Division artwork. ;) Saville never knew his vision would one day reach secret comms. He should really start commissioning.

125 - Oh hell yes, I'd read that fic.

131 - that photo never fails to crack me up.

133 - I completely agree.

151 - I wouldn't believe that. Even God's got a wicked sense of humor. I mean, look at all of us. :D

156 - I always liken it that if they sacrifice themselves they are doing it for the good of all the universe. Sure, an immediate concern may be "Oh, I like the Doctor, my like for him (platonic or not) fuels the ignition phase of this action" and then I see it change in the last moment from "for the Doctah" to "for everyone and everything". They all seem to get that "ah ha" look cast over their faces. At least to me. I don't know enough about BSG to make that call there, too.

118. Having Xavin betray the team would be a bigger example of character assassination than actually killing her off. But fortunately it doesn't look like it's going in that direction.

136. I was the same way. Dammit, Shuya, what would Nuriko say?!

152. Yeeeah, that's shallow. Though River Song was definitely not a perfect character, I liked the fact that the Doctor was going to have a love interest who wasn't a teenage girl.

148

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHAHA. You are funny. People think Anne Rice can't write, explain her fandom (and the lady has a stick up her ass about fan works).

Want a female author who can write? Francesca Lia Block. Her stuff is a bit eccentric and she romanticizes L.A. like nobody's business, but it's still good stuff.

Anne Rice is kind of a bitch. But she can write. Not my preferred kind of thing, but still not as awful as Stephenie Meyer.

Also, two more female authors who can write to knock socks off? Lois McMaster Bujold and Diane Duane.

That's disappointing because you're really missing what makes Doctor Who have it's magic in the first place. I think if people would give it a chance they'd like it more than they might realize.

Plus you're missing out on all male companions which apparently aren't allowed to exist in nu!who. :(

David Tennant = 37
Alex Kingston = 45

Age difference = 8 years

David Tennant = 37
Billie Piper = 25

Age difference = 11 years

Please explain how Alex's character is "too old" to be paired with David's character, when David's character is presumably not "too old" to be paired with Billie's character.

Personally, I don't have a problem with either age difference, because my favorite NuWho companions (and favorite ones to ship with Ten) are played by Freema Agyeman (29), Catherine Tate (40) and LIS FUCKING SLADEN, QUEEN OF FUCKING HAWTNESS (60 FUCKING YEARS OLD, AND STILL FUCKING HAWT).

And for the record, I'm a 33-year-old straight guy.

I have mixed feelings on the last episode. Sosuke was a copout. I'd say more but... spoilers. There could have been a better way.

I was happy for Ogurin and Eri, though it would've been cool to see Ogurin man up and break off relations with his wife instead of skipping straight to the scene in the airport.

Motorcycle/truck scene = wtf. Anticlimactic and a waste of five minutes.

Re: 138 -- I am OP

(Anonymous) 2008-07-03 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I just hated the fact that Sousuke's death was so lightly played upon. I totally got a "YAY THE WITCH IS DEAD THE WITCH IS DEAD" type of feeling. I expected more, Sousuke was this beast, this MONSTER of a character, and then he JUST realizes his crimes? He just realizes that he's been a dick for 9 episodes?

Please, spare me writers.

I honestly believe that the writers was really only satisfying the Ruka/Michiru shippers. It's clearly obvious when Michiru easily, without hesitation, went back to them to raise her child in this happy go lucky atmosphere.

Oh god, what was the need of that motorcycle scene? Really, that final extra episode I could have done without ... literally 70% of the scenes in it.

And that episode 11.5? Done without it completely.

The lack of uke80 probably came from the belief that not many can top him. You'll have to squint if you want to find kickass female characters in KHR. They are there but mostly overshadowed by the girls who go back to the kitchen to make sammiches for the boys.
