148. What? We can't criticize a woman for bad writing without being misogynists now? Sorry, but if you're a crap writer, I'm not going to check what's between your legs before I tell you so. And I'm not 'jealous' either, because if I ever have a fandom it'll be composed of people a bit smarter than 12-year-old girls who read it because "OMFG hotttt vampire but there's no actual sex so Mommy lets me read it." Trust me, it's perfectly okay for someone to criticize the work of a woman, even if they support women in general.

148. ...Actually I think I might agree with that. There have been mediocre male writers who have made the best-seller list but never seemed to garner anywhere near as much hatred. Maybe some hatred, but not as much as I've seen for Twilight.

Too Big 2: I have no idea what anime that is but it sounds fucking awesome.

131. Almost no one who finds incest interesting in fiction supports it in real life because of the terrible consequences. If it bothers you so much though, maybe you should go cold turkey and stop reading it. There's no point in tormenting yourself over stories.

151. Even if I believed in hell, I would think being an intelligent, insightful person who gave pleasure to millions would make him a pretty poor candidate for that place.

154. Islands in the stream, that is what they are!

Re: 131

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-07-04 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
On that note, though, I wonder why so many people "don't support" (as in, think it's horrible?) twincest IRL, since the whole problem with incest IS the terrible consequences... ie, genetic problems with any potential offspring. If both twins are male or both twins are female, that aspect doesn't even come up. Hmm. :/

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
145. We just rewatched my favourite story from the old show, Ghost Light. I was still blown away by it and I will always adore it. But it was very easy to imagine someone who became a fan with the new series wondering why it was so bloody cheap. Not just wobbly walls or dodgy special effects - it was made in a tremendous rush. No money = no time to rehearse, to do multiple takes, to do remounts or anything but the most basic post-production. Now, Ghost Light was one of the last stories to be made, when the budget had dwindled to nothing and the BBC no longer gave a toss. The early seventies stuff doesn't suffer from the same desperate lack of funds, and looks and feels technically much better, but it's still going to seem cheap and slow to a modern viewer. I love Image of the Fendahl, but geez, it was thirty years ago.

tl;dr Ignore old skool snobs; the new show comes with no obligation to work through a back catalogue of ancient television. (Although Fendahl is still worth a look. :-)

[identity profile] redrevelry.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
101. I feel that way often, though not about that character.

106. ...Prehensile hair is the best excuse for liking a character I've ever heard.

108. There's a warning for spoilers at the top of the page. It's your own fault for reading anyway.

112. This is so cute. <3

116. I think the same. Unfortunately, the best chance of being licensed it's got is Viz, and they're busy with Bleach and Naruto.

130. I agree SO MUCH. No, the creator owns it. That's why you'd get smacked down for copyright infringement faster than you can backpedal if you try to make and sell your own version. My local newspaper ran an article back when JKR said Dumbledore was gay saying that it didn't matter what she said because "she had forfeited her creation to the fans" or something. I RAGED SO HARD.

140. I don't know the band, but I remember that picture from waaay back. I think it was on DA or something. I've always loved it.

141. Kenshin is like... twenty-something.

145. Me neither! I'm sure I'm missing out, but I like my TV series to be pretty. Outdated special effects make me cringe.

148. I think many of them are so vocal about their hatred because it's popular, and it's popular to hate it. You make a post bashing it and there will be tons of people agreeing with it. I find it kind of ridiculous. There are so many more horrible books out there, even ones on the bestseller list (has anyone read The Inheritance Trilogy? You think Meyer likes purple prose...). There are a lot of really awful and shallow shoujo manga that are even worse about portraying healthy relationships than Twilight, yet no one piles on those.

The amount of Twilight hate is really starting to get on my nerves. I like it; I know it's trash, but I like it. I don't think anyone would enjoy seeing a series they like bashed at every turn, which is what's happening. If you hate it, post about what you think once, and move on. Everything that can be said about it has been said several times over.

149. Yes! :D I have a lot of mainstream bands that get ridiculed online on my iPod, but that doesn't mean I'm a huge fan of them. I actually don't pay attention to any of the bands I like outside of when the next CD is coming out. Everytime I do look in to them I usually find out something really stupid that they did (like say AIDS isn't real wtf Dave Grohl) that makes me enjoy their music less.

156. I'm only just getting into DW and I've never seen BSG, but that's a problem in a lot of series. You get these kickass female characters who always end up playing second fiddle to the guys anyway.

too big 1: Do you have the link to the fic?

No. I hate it because she EMBARASSES women authors like myself. Bella is an uptight prissy "ew, geeks, get me some Raid, I need a boyfriend to be important" girl that everyone hated through their entire high school career, Edward is a confusing "I'm dangerous for you but let's make out anyway! I'm going to break up with you but it's cause I love you! I'm going to leave then come back when you jump off a cliff!" boy who WATCHES HER SLEEP. The only thing they have REMOTELY in common is that they're both a Mary Sue and Gary Stue who have obsession issues.

I hate it because my library keeps trying to get the local girls in my city to read it in a desperate attempt to actually get girls to read instead of obsessing who's fucking who on the OC.

I hate that I know girls around MY neighborhood who are now wishing for a romance like Ed and Bella's. An nonsupporting, emotionally-abusive, creepy, unrealistic romance. It. Makes. Me. Sick.

I hate it because I could point out fifty other authors male and female who deserve ten times the attention that book does.

I hate it because the fandom is hypocritical, annoying, I-no-longer-have-Snape-to-fantasize-over-what-other-book-can-I-obsess-over-with-other-people-with whiney little bitches who make secrets like THAT and use the dumbest ass logic on the face of the EARTH to try and prove that the book is worth anything beyond the $20 you got suckered into paying for a hardback copy.

... I need a cigarette. x_x

112. I do that too sometimes. I just sit back and wow at how far we've come as a civilization. That's so neat that there's someone else that does it! I always felt so silly but it made my day so much brighter to just stare at something so "simple" that we take for granted and try to figure out how it works. Things like that (:

He's too busy pulling Anderson's pigtails, anyway, to have any time for Chris Matthews.

131. If it's a consensual relationship, who cares?

(Besides, iirc, someone had the signs ready and just forced it into their hands. It's not like they wrote it themselves.)

112. Awh! So uplifting to look at life in an entirely different and new way :)

125. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE DOOGIE HOWSER SECRET FOR THE MOTHER FUCKING WIN. That was my SHOW back when I was six. Doogie was my first crush ever (never cared for Vinnie and it shows my sensibilities lol) and I'm pretty sure he's still the basis for what I look for in a man. (Not the 16 years old part, though, heh.) Though I do feel that if I watched it again now, I would ship it and that makes me feel like I'd be taking a bug dump all over my childhood.

136. I totally don't know anything about Death Note but the fact that he's in that movie makes me want to see it. XD

139. AGREE.
143. That movie will either be very good or very awful.
145. You're missing out, but to each his own.
148. ... Or maybe people just hate it when what they think is of low quality gets lauded? This happens with many popular fandoms, so why not just ignore the critics instead of playing armchair psychologist? Also: every time someone criticizes a woman for something, it doesn't stem from misogyny. I'll never figure out why people throw that accusation around so loosely. Also #2: Maybe it's the sparkling vampires that puts some over the edge.
158. You might have a point with that.

156

[identity profile] amandarex.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think Jackie Tyler is portrayed as an evil mommy figure at all. She's a lot of things. One may not like or understand her, but evil, she isn't. I think, when you think about her point of view and her characterization, mostly she's a lady whose life was harder than she thought it was going to be, and a mother who was more attached to her daughter because of the years she spent raising her on her own.

Not that there aren't issues with female characters on Doctor Who, but I don't think it's as one-dimensional as a lot of people portray it.

Re: 156

(Anonymous) 2008-07-04 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't thinking of Jackie at all though. I was thinking more of the Racnoss queen and the woman from the Adipose episode. Jackie balances them a little, I guess.

Seriously, it's secrets like these that make me annoyed enough to de-lurk myself.

Maybe I dislike the book because it's poorly written, has a boring main character and equally as boring side-characters. Where the hell are you getting misogyny? You know, it IS possible that the boks just suck in general. If an author is bad at writing, then I'm going to tell them so, regardless of gender.

And BTW I'm a girl. A teenage girl at that.
