I read this exact comment on Reddit a few days ago.

I get that. But I think people often fail to understand that they're not dealing with a monolith here. Saying that well, you once had a run in with a Kylo stan that got ugly, so from now on whenever his name comes up you're going to lay a righteous smackdown on whoever dared utter those cursed syllables and expect everyone to find that reasonable.

I remember watching some episodes of their show and I sort of enjoyed a few, but then it came to the animal rights episode where they painted AR activists as a bunch of asshole nutjobs. Then they stated they'd rather the last chimpanzee go extinct than a single methhead die, and I've hated them ever since. I've never seen so much anthropocentrism in all my life. Animals aren't machines, they're sentient beings just like we are.

"I don't think the issue is with having an opinion, but rather with putting words in someone's mouth the second they mention their own opinion."

Exactly this.

Okay, I'll chime in, original fiction werewolf writer here. I'll admit before I really started delving into my research for my novel/series, I didn't know anything about Talbot the Wolfman outside of the three second thing for the Universal movie collection in front of the Mummy movies and that honestly, was about it. I mean, I knew he existed because of Bruce Coville's Monster of the Year Book (a must read for monster lovers.) But it wasn't until I started going "how do I make my werewolves different" and delving more into werewolf lore that I found out more about the actual character.

I eventually watched the remake of the movie. Love Van Hellsing (also part of Universal's stuff) and there are several other Univeral made werewolf movies I've enjoyed. (Universal seems to have most the rights.)

The thing I found about werewolves is that they aren't as culturally popular and focused as vampires! There are too many diverse iterations of how they exist, what their curse/disease is like and how it all goes terribly wrong. (You've got werewolves, lycanthropes, the loup garou and dogmen at the least in folk lore.) Nothing really gelled together like Dracula did for vampires to push them into public consciousness.

So, even if you are into monster stuff, I wouldn't expect them to know about the character of that particular werewolf movie, or the movie that actually came before it from Universal that was a science gone wrong werewolf movie. The lore and the media is just too scattered for that.

Wow. That is a keen lack of self-awareness you're displaying right there.

I look at it this way...

Pretend like instead of fandom, the topic of the conversation is summer vacation.

Person A: I think I'd like to go to Thailand.
Person B: Well, that's fine as long as you don't support the sex trade!
Person A: ... what? But I'm not...
Person B: I mean, I'm TOTALLY OKAY with people going to Thailand as long as they're not engaging in sex trafficking or underage sex with minors or visiting those elephant sanctuaries that are abusing elephants and milking tourists for their money or doing hard drugs and you can't convince me any of that is acceptable because it's really not and also blah blah blah...

It's this type of conversation that rubs me the wrong way. Yes, some of the people who visit Thailand do some seriously skeevy, horrible things while they're there. But it's weird that people think this justifies jumping in and lecturing everyone who even mentions going to Thailand and pre-assuming that they're going to be banging underage hookers and supporting elephant abuse unless they're told that's problematic right away.

Reverse Google image search says it's Harry Styles.

You're not alone, dude. I still watch every episode but a fair few people who I follow on tumblr now only watch episodes with Castiel in it.

Okay, I was vaguely aware there was a character called "The Wolfman," but I've never seen the movie and I wouldn't have recognized the name Lawrence Talbot.

Maybe instead of making a big deal of being shocked that they don't know it, just recommend that they watch the movie because they might like it?

(I wish more people in fandom had that attitude. Personally, I like being able to recommend things that people might like. But it seems like more people are into making a fuss about how many things people have already seen)

Mac Taylor from CSI New York is cool. If more conservatives were like him I wouldn't have such a problem with them.

I could also do without Penn yelling that babies sucking tits are beautiful. I would never hassle a woman for breastfeeding but I don't think it's beautiful either.

Re: Man, /cgl/ tho. Fucking /cgl/.

[personal profile] soldatsasha 2018-02-03 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
/cgl/ is nuts, bro.

honestly the blatant misogyny of /cgl/ isn't nearly as bad as the really insidious mindset they promote. The whole "homg that bitch is 1 point above her ideal BMI she is a LANDWHALE OMG LIKE MAN THE HARPOONS GRRRLS!!!" and the weird fucking beauty culture of like... spending an hour a day on your skin care routine. (Not, like, personal grooming in general, just washing your face with thirty different mega $$$$ products.) And everyone must have circle lenses, everyone must have a thigh gap, etc.

And it's always been bad but since KPop became The Thing and the Korean Beauty trends hit it's just soooo much worse.

Yes. Every episode without Castiel is a good episode.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-02-03 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry Styles. He's a former boy-band idol. He's considered to be so sexy by some fucking crazy people that his bandmate, Louis, had a fake wife, a fake pregnancy, and a fake baby to hide how much they're banging behind the scenes. (The Year Babygate is Revealed is becoming the new Year of Linux on the Desktop.)

The latest rumor is that Styles was sort of good in Dunkirk (although not good enough to get any award nominations). Nolan directed Dunkirk. Nolan is contracted to direct the next Bond. Therefore, Styles will be the next Bond, assuming they can pull him away from Luis's arms after their super secret love affair that everyone seems to know about goes public. (Is it obvious that I don't consider pre-pre-pre-casting rumors to be much more credible than babygate?)

Watch Stormbreaker if you like the idea of a junior Bond film.

I think that has a lot to do with it. She's finally her true self and that's a pretty amazing thing.

Yeah, I just watched the movie the other day and that's exactly what I thought.

I'm interested in characters who are military/mercenary/survivalist/off-grid types with lots of weapons and maybe some paranoia. That's a lot of things people associate with far-right political leanings.

I support very strict gun control laws. I just like watching fictional things go boom sometimes.

I like Jayne from Firefly, but I hear the actor has some strong views.
