Does the internet die from late February through April?

I feel like everything gets super quiet around those times, especially on LJ and DW. Is it just me?

(In b4 "LJ and DW are dead lol", I actually have pretty active flists, for LJ and DW. Just not this time of year.)

Aliens. I feel like Alien was a perfect horror movie, and Aliens ruins that. Alien is to me one of those movies that doesn't need a sequel. It is better alone. Plus, I just don't like Cameron's style. And his Ripley feels very different from the character of the first movie to me.

Are there any canons you consider perfect or that you like so much on its own that you are avoiding fandom of it because it couldn't get better?

Not canons you are just okay not being in the fandom of, but ones where you go out of your way to avoid fanworks and fandom because they can't be better than the original?

Movie Club Discussion!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2018-04-07 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Today we are discussing Event Horizon!

Here are some questions to start us off.

1. What was your initial reaction when the movie started? How did that change by the end of the movie?

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

3. What was your favorite scenes? Your least favorite? Why?

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

5. What did you think of the production (cinematography, editing, costuming, etc.)?

Feel free to talk about anything else as well!

Re: Movie Club Discussion!

1. My initial thoughts during the opening were, "This is a 90s as fuck opening". The font, the music, the transitions. Also, they were very optimistic in thinking that we'd be on the moon in 2015. At the end, I thought it was okay. I didn't hate but I didn't love it either. A bit too gory for me.

2. I didn't have a favorite or least favorite character, to be honest. I liked D.J. but I think that was just because of the actor. Maybe my least favorite was Weir because he was a bit annoying.

3. My favorite scene was them coming up on the Horizon. Mostly because Sam Neill had the same look of wonder he did in Jurassic Park. Cracked me up. And I liked the chompy arms they used to dock onto the ship. My least favorite scene was Weir trying to explain how the Event Horizon works. I hate the whole trope of someone explaining something and then someone goes "Explain it in English." Like, you know what layman's terms are dude. Use them. Sort of the same scene, when Weir is playing the recording. First off, why would you play them that scary ass recording. Secondly, NO ONE ON YOUR TEAM KNOWS LATIN? YOU DON'T KNOW BASIC LATIN?

4. The music was pretty meh to me. Not super memorable but it didn't take away from the movie. Very much a product of it's time.

5. I really liked the construction of the ship (the outside more than the inside). Wish we had seen more of that weird green, motherboard tunnel. That was really cool to look at. I also like their reasoning for the gel baths. Bit more interesting than just freezing people because of long trips. The CGI was pretty awful but seemed pretty good for the 90s. Also, I love how they could not decide how futuristic they wanted to go. They have super scanners and spaceships but still use CDs. xD

I thought it was good, overall. The ideas were cool and the vibe was really strong and cool and sort of... not gothic, but in that direction. The whole hell-demon-possession aspect of it was really strong for me. And I liked Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne, because I always like Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne.

I did feel like it was more gorey/splatterific/schlocky/pure horror than I usually go for. So that's just personal preference I guess.

I was reading about it and I guess there was a bunch of drama around the editing and deleted footage and stuff? it'd be interesting to see something that was closer to the original vision, but I guess we'll never know.

I saw this movie when I was sixteen and it's been nearly twenty years and I haven't been brave enough to rewatch it since. Regardless of how good or bad it is, Event Horizon is sticky. When I least expect it, something reminds me of the movie, and then that makes me remember the blood orgy, and it's just "fucking Event Horizon".

For me I like to headcanon this movie as a bit of a per-curser to the Warhammer 40k universe because honestly it kinda fits.

The tech has that same high-low tech clunkyness to it that the 40k Imperium has, and the going through hell thing is legit a thing that human ships in the 40k universe do as well. It's called The Warp but it also has demons and shit in it.

Event Horizon is otherwise fun enough on it's own, none of the characters are terribly memorable to me but I like some of the shots and the core-thing is pretty neat too. Plus I'm a fan of the sci-fi horror aspect to it.

It's not terribly creepy of frightening to me, but I think it works well at setting up some tension.

It is very 90's VFX, sets and costumes though, but I also don't think it's that bad for the time tbh. I think they probably did the best with their budget.

But yeah, it's kinda fun and weird.

I love this movie. So much. Usually I can't handle this much gore. But the plot makes up for that. There really needs to be more scifi horror. I love it.

1. What was your initial reaction when the movie started? How did that change by the end of the movie?

I was nervous. Someone recommended the movie to me. I usually avoid gory horror, so I was unsure of whether I would enjoy it. By the end, though, I was in love. This movie has so many tropes that I love.

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

Ooo, hard. A tie between Weir and Miller, though Weir may edge out a bit. Both have tragic pasts, and how they react to that past is different but equally fascinating. I really felt Weir's pain as the ship taunted him with vision's of his wife's suicide. And you could feel Miller's guilt over his past actions throughout the movie.

3. What was your favorite scenes? Your least favorite? Why?

So hard to pick for me. But I really love the scene near the end just before the Event Horizon goes back . Sacrifice is a big trope for me. I love it. And the look of the ship as it powers up is really well done. And Weir totally possessed by the evil that the ship has become is well done as well adn genuinely scary.

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

I thought it was decent. It worked. It wasn't overly memorable, though. But it didn't detract from the movie. It was a serviceable soundtrack.

5. What did you think of the production (cinematography, editing, costuming, etc.)?

I love the look of this movie. The look of the Event Horizon itself is fascinating and creepy. The space shots are great. You really feel like the characters are astronauts and the ships are real. And the brief glimpse into the rift's effects is scary without going overboard. Flashing through it was a smart idea. And while this movie is gory, I think the gore is well placed and used well. It doesn't detract for me. It actually ups the scare.

Feel free to talk about anything else as well!

Saw this movie a year ago with my cousins, I really enjoyed it (the solitude of the ship really built the atmosphere). All I want to say is that Laurence Fishbourne's eyelashes were SO lovely in this movie. That is all.
