138. Yeah, so I never watched anything involving Care Bears, but that thing is EXACTLY the sort of thing that would have absolutely traumatized the fuck out of me twenty years ago. Holy shit. What. I mean. How could anyone even think that was a good idea?

144. The knowledge that Ghostwriter would totally never show himself to me even if he did exist (because I'm not awesome enough or whatever) really, really depressed me at the time.

160. Request it, but try to use a slightly different writing style to phrase the request, so it's not obviously you. Then, a little while later (like a few hours or a day or something), pretend to discover it. Gush about it to your friends, second the request like hell in front of them (or tell them you're seconding the hell out of it), and deny like mad that it was you. Alternatively, request it, and when they ask whether it was you, say "Yeah, so?" Either way.

I bought that movie on VHS in a thrift store when I was about seven and it scared the fuck out of me. D: I only got the nerve to re-watch it, like, last week. D:

158. Okay, seriously? Dexter and Light are COMPLETELY different issues. Dexter is filled with an overwhelming compulsion to kill. He's a serial killer. He could not stop no matter how much he wanted to, so he focuses his instincts into a "constructive" way. Light is obsessed with "cleansing" the world, and wants to make it a better place FOR HIM. He wants people to live by his code no matter what it takes.

Dexter individually checks each and every person, finds proof that they're guilty, and personally kills them. Light impersonally strikes them down from afar with no information beyond "the News says they did it".

Dexter does what he does because he has to. Light does what he does because he can. I'm not saying Dexter should be idolized or respected, and what he's doing is still wrong, but he's a lighter shade of gray than Light. Ironically.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/____ero__sennin/ 2008-07-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
As an aside, this...really is more a general rant about people who think Dexter and Light are omg TOTALLY THE SAME when they're...not. Light is not the absolute evil in the universe, and Dexter isn't admirable, but they're still not on the same level.

Oh, heck yes! All the time. I'd lose a lot, but I would be happy even hearing Mr. Fry intone that I had an astounding negative three hundred and seventy points.

If I'm not smart enough to get on QI, then I'd gladly appear on Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Or Have I Got News for You. Really, any Brit quiz show except Mastermind.

138. Is that the one where the creepy book with the creepy face manipulated the creepy kid into gathering creepy ingredients for a creepy potion? That creeped me the Hell out when I was a kid.

155. Shipwar time! AUTO/GLaDOS vs. HAL/GLaDOS (http://xkcd.com/375/)!

168. Aw! I think you're hideously lucky just to have had that encounter in the first place. Although I admit, I'd scream and break things if I lost something like that.

170. Also, maybe that would finally convince me to stop being lazy and reread CoP. (I have the edition pictured!) Although I may have to now just to consider this.

138

[identity profile] tangldupinplaid.livejournal.com 2008-07-22 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, it isn't, it's even older than that one! But that movie was creepy too. D:

178: Fucking Hell yes.

172: If this is Rise and Naoto I'm all for it too! Although there seems to be a lot less fans of the pairing now that everyone knows Naoto's a chick (aka, when I started shipping it).

I haven't, not seriously, not recently. I'm even starting to make an effort at thinking in terms of A Future.

But there's a specific emotional -- something -- in that scene that gets right down into my bones, and I don't especially like asking myself why.

(Thank you for being concerned.)

Me, too. My fantasies also involve obscure pretentious/useless trivia I know and how I could use it in the course of the episode.

In short, IAWTS. M-preg. No thank you.

144. Ghostwriter. =)
I liked that show a lot. I think I still imagine books "reaching out" to me and trying to get me to take them off the shelf, as if some hidden mysteries lie inside. And only I can see them.

Aladdin inspired some weird as Hell bondage and torture fantasies when I was little. Remember when he's chained and gagged and thrown into a lake? And Jasmine's slave outfit? And the hourglass of DOOM?

Yeah. My Id, let me show you it.

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2008-07-22 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
101. People are strange when you're a stranger.

104. AND I SHIIIIIP IT AND I SHIIIIIIIIP IT AND I SHIIIIP IT AND I SHIIIIIIIIIP IT IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII SHIIIIIIIP IT

109. "Punk ass"?

For some reason, I never saw his character as that. Snobby, yes, but "punk ass"? Draco In Leather Pants (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DracoInLeatherPants), indeed.

112. Brace for the tsunami of AHEM WELL ACCORDING TO MY RESEARCH.

Actually, as someone who's in the midst of the book (chapter thirteen), I must say that any bashing on my part will be derived from how poor in quality I think the writing is. I can't speak for anyone but myself. Purple prose, for one thing, belongs in parodies and Harlequins, but ladling adjective after adjective on Edward to describe his sparklenomenon? Not a fan of that. What IS necessary, however, is character analysis, something I think is sorely lacking in the book. Since she's writing in first person, Meyer should have given us a better look into Bella's head--WHY is she in love with Edward, for one thing, and WHY doesn't she care that he is immensely attracted to her blood? Instead, the reader is treated to descriptions of how she cooked dinner for Charlie or quickly completed a paper on Shakespeare's Macbeth. Meyer tells instead of shows, and I'm not the first to have pointed that out. Something like this from the end of Chapter 9:

"And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him."

really deserves a little more explanation.

Her side characters are good, but her main characters are not, and since the story is about them, this is a problem. In the beginning, Edward is a jerk to Bella, and then turns around to immediately befriend her with no explanation. I wouldn't mind that so much had Bella not just accepted it--someone who is supposed to be as smart as Bella (something for which I don't see concrete evidence; you can SAY that you took AP classes, but just throwing that detail out there reminds me too much of Mademoiselle Mary Sue) should have questioned the sudden turn-of-events. That nice romance element you spoke of may seem nice to you, but to me, it reminds me more of a stalker/victim setting where the stalker is madly in love with the stalked. Personally, I think Twilight would have been MUCH better had it gone with the stalker/victim scenario, but it didn't. Sucks for me.

I've only read half the book, and I have every intention of finishing it. Not everyone just hates something because it's mainstream, though I agree with you there--people should dislike something because THEY dislike it and not because hate is en vogue.

120. Meet 112! I'm sure you'll get along nicely.

125. This could be an AboveTheInfluence commercial. "I thought Will Ferrell was funny. Then I stopped smoking pot. *dramatic scene where everyone but the quitter is giggling at Anchorman, followed by the AboveTheInfluence logo*"

137. ... holy fuck. Diane = Dana! EVEN THEIR NAMES SOUND ALIKE!!

141. This is a common fandom dislike.

169. You're in for a rough ride. ;-)

109, 112, 153, 158

[identity profile] winged-panda.livejournal.com 2008-07-22 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
109. Yeah, I know what you mean. He drives me crazy in canon. He's suppose to, though. xD
112. For the record, I only formed my negative opinion after I read the first book. The fact that I really don't want to waste money on the other books now, should tell you something. I might get them at the library, though, just to see if I want to tear my eyes out any less.
153. Nintendo was there before any of the other consoles, and the NES was the system I started gaming with. The SNES was just amazing. For a while they were getting stale... but then, well, they made the Wii and the DS, that was pretty kickass in my opinion. XD I have a lot of really fun and original DS games too, I mean, they're not made by Nintendo but they're on Nintendo, so.... I have to politely disagree ^_^
158. It's kind of how they're both portrayed, honestly. I tried to watch that other series and it creeped me the hell out. Dexter doesn't. He has a girlfriend and is fond of her kids from day one. You just can't hate a guy like that. Whereas that other guy.... is just obsessed with one thing in the first few episodes and cackles madly over it... yucky.

153

[identity profile] tangldupinplaid.livejournal.com 2008-07-22 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It pisses me off how Nintendo is focusing all their efforts on non-gamers (cough, WiiFit, cough, Brain Age), but they can still crap out some fun stuff every now and then (<3 Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire <3)

109. I can relate to changing an opinion on a character due to something like that. Though in my case, it's reading a really good fic or seeing interesting art about them. In some movies/books/shows/etc. it's the only way to actually get to experience a character if they don't show up often or aren't the main character in the series.

Is THAT what it is? Mine look different. I'm afraid the movie will butcher it.
