[Jessica Jones season 2]

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Not unrealistic, and also kind of a staple of the genre that Jessica Jones is. So, even if it's boring, it's also kind of inevitable.

Also, I don't understand what the point is of including that the guy is a dudebro, can someone explain what difference that makes>

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems like a real downgrade after Luke Cage, maybe?

I think the point was that for Jessica Jones, who's been through a lot of abuse and being used by people, being a dudebro has a personality that tends to view women as things to be used isn't the best of situations. It's possible (and easy!!!) to have one night stands where two folks come together and leave amicably, but I'm assuming Jessica felt degraded by this one.

(Haven't seen the episode myself)

Doesn't seem to stop anyone else from fucking them.

One person's harmless experimentation is another's dangerous backsliding into destructive cycles.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen it either, but it could be that she WANTS to feel degraded because she doesn't think she deserves better... Also a staple of self-hating male characters who punish themselves with similar kinds of actions...

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It didn't really show that she felt dedgraded, but she did stop it part way through because he was a dick and also it wasn't doing it for her. (or at least that was what I took away from it)

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it is a cliche because it is something that acutally happens.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't make it interesting, though. I agree with OP.

DA

What kind of reaction would be more interesting to you?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Non self destructive ways of dealing with it?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but at that point, aren't you just asking for Jessica Jones to be a completely different show and genre?

Yeah cause Jessica is all about non-self-destructive ways of dealing. Would you like her to get therapy and weave flower crowns and sing kumbaya?

Well, I like that bit of realism so I disagree with OP.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I always appreciated that HTGAWM showed a different dysfunctional coping mechanism (junk food overeating (and booze)) with their main character.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Junk food overeating seems like such an underused trope despite being common in real life. :(

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
...that's literally Jessica's whole deal, though. That's what she was doing in s1 too. And it's what she did in the comics. Hogarth, that you could argue, but hard drinking and meaningless sex w strangers you meet in seedy bars is par for the course with hard-boiled private dicks and that is EXACTLY what Jess is.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. But it doesn't mean she can't ever be anything else. How boring would it be if the characters we watch never have the capacity for change?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing that bothered me about Hogarth's sex scene was how crappy she treated her friends when she felt exposed. What an asshole.

There is nothing wrong with meaningless sex, as a coping mechanism or not.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
I miss her with Luke :(

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched season 2 yet, but part of the reason it took me three attempts to get through season 1 was because, while I really wanted to like the show, I can't stand this type of thing. And for people saying "that's what her character/the genre IS, though?!" there is this little thing called character development and narrative that suggests - even REQUIRES - shows to change from their initial set-up over time.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It's really weird to me the responses in this thread that don't seem to understand how that works. Jessica already experiences change and development in season 1. She continues to experience it in season 2, when she gets involved with Oscar and his kid. Like that's not a big, uncharacteristic change for her?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

So your issue isn't that she doesn't change... it's that she reverts to her old ways?

I mean, I just don't understand these lofty expectations from a Netflix comic book noir. It looks like the same old sex negativity to me, pretentiously packaged as concerns about good writing.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-28 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
DA - there's a difference between sex negativity and calling out unhealthy sexual behavior, you know. Being sex positive doesn't mean thinking all sex is positive.

AND it's bad writing to ignore character development and go back to the same well over and over again. It's almost like these are two different arguments.
