Mostly because of different standards for men and women in that department. The act of a straight guy exposing a girl's underwear and a straight guy exposing a guy's boxers tend to have different connotations. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it has to do with the culture around men and women's body's as much as anything.

Partly this. And alps partly the fact that it very, very, very clearly wasn't written with that interpretation in mind, and in fact interpreting it that way is pretty clearly at odds with much of the tone and tenor of the rest of the book / series.

I'm in total agreement with you, anon. Exposing someone's underwear a la "pantsing" is meant to evoke the underlying embarrassment that seems to be endemic to the human consciousness. See: all the people who have dreams about showing up to class or work in their underwear. It's not about the genitals, it's about the vulnerability of having your private self made public.

JK Rowling wrote James doing the magical version of pantsing Snape. have we really gotten to the point where people don't know that this ever was a thing that immature dicks did to each other to be immature?

well, just for context, if a writer wrote a rape scene, but had no intended it to actually be rape and thought they were just writing some kinky shit (Thinking all the bodice ripper stuff) does that mean that it's A-OK?

I mean, "The writer never even considered that this is basically assault" doesn't feel like it would have a mitigating effect in any other circumstance.

My lukewarm take:

The scene would absolutely be seen as sexual harassment if Snape were female, and if I heard about this happening irl I would be shocked and disgusted by the bully's actions far beyond my normal level of shock for bullies, so I don't find it a stretch to call it sexual harassment as it exists.

BUT I think Rowling was too ignorant to realize what she had written. So I don't think it's the worst thing ever for fans to choose to ignore that aspect of canon because it really is terrible in a way Rowling clearly did not intend and I don't blame anyone for not wanting accidental horror in their favorite character's backstory.

BUT I dislike it and think it's somewhat ignorant when the people who choose to interpret the scene more innocently call those who interpret it as sexual harassment dramatic or stupid or SJWs or brainless Snape stans or whatever. I can't stand Snape but I think that what James did to him was inappropriate and went beyond normal bullying.

If you honestly think pantsing someone goes well beyond normal bullying, then you don't have much experience with normal bullying. Kids can be absolutely brutal to one another, and some truly horrible behaviour is bog standard.

But regardless of level of bullying involved, it isn't ignorance so much as it is values dissonance - at the time Rowling would have been coming up through school, pantsing someone was not considered sexual assault. Hell, outside a few advocacy circles, it wasn't considered sexual assault at the time OotP was written. It's not ignorance to fail to predict a shift in opinion.

If you actually think that this is the same thing as "sexual assault," then you have basically made that term a joke. And no, this wouldn't be sexual assault even if they were opposite sexes. It's rude and hurtful, but it is categorically very, very, very different from rape.

Didn't Snape himself invent the spells used in the incident? I'm sure he only had entirely pure intentions for that spell and didn't do the exact same thing to anyone at all He had to have used it on someone else for others to use it. I'd see the incident as karma to be honest!
