What's your favorite fantasy novel/book series ever?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Bonus points if it isn't by Tolkien.

Katherine Kerr's Deverry series was my long time favorite growing up. They are still solid books. I honestly wouldn't pick Tolkien, he's not even top ten for me.

I never read much fantasy, but I love Diana Wynne Jones’ Fire and Hemlock. (Does that count?)

Pamela Dean's "Tam Lin", even though [spoiler!] the actual fantasy bits only appear at the end.

All the same, it's a very lovely book.

You can't just ask something like that.

I guess it has to be Little, Big by John Crowley. It's just so good and well-written and perfect.

C J Cherryh's 'Fortress' series, and Tanith Lee's 'Flat Earth' series.

I used to really love some of the Pern books - Menolly's stuff, mostly - but i'm a bit more 'eh' about them anymore.

I also really loved the Thieve's World shared world books.

Fafherd and the Grey Mouser books.

The Rivers of London series. I am a slut for urban fantasy (the only kind of fantasy I read).

No bonus points for me. Tolkien is my favorite by a wide margin. Everything I want in fantasy is there.

Not going to earn bonus points if I give my honest answer. I don't care. I love Tolkien.

The Belgariad/The Mallorean and The Elenium/The Tamuli all by David and Leigh Eddings. Yeah, yeah, I know they're not perfect and there's a lot to legit complain about them but they're hands down my fav. Partly because I grew up reading them, so for nostalgia, and partly because they remain some of the best 'party gets together and goes EPIC QUESTING' that I've found.

Discworld.

The Seventh Princess by Nick Sullivan

I don't read much fantasy, but I remember that one well and it must have been over 25 years since I last did.

That's easy when you don't like Tolkien, lol.

Honestly I don't read a lot of things that would probably qualify as fantasy, so I guess what Discworld novels I have read.

It's pretty recent, but it was everything I never knew I always wanted, so:

Philip Reeve's Railhead trilogy. For given definition of fantasy.

The Edge Chronicles comes in as a close second, but that's more because I love a series with dynamic socioeconomics. It seems right that when there's a fifty year time skip things are almost unrecognizable.

A question....why are 'meet the parent' moment in fics....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2018-10-23 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
so fucking weird? WHY do so many authors have this compulsion to either write super-nosey parents who ask uber-embarassing questions, or parents who canoodle and whatnot and then, of course, the 'kids' get all 'grossed out'.

Or parents who leap in in the first five seconds to tell 'embarrassing' stories.....

I was never embarrassed by my parents, or 'afraid' to introduce my friends or my boyfriend to them. I wanted them to meet - i thought my parents were fun and kinda cool, if a bit old-fashioned. I guess....

Why do fic-authors write parents so cliche and goofy, and always make the kid(s) all squirmy and freaked out and 'omg, i'm so sorry my parents acted like humans' and reverting to being 12 years old?
