107. Right-wing maybe but not fascist. And stop being an elitist bastard and welcome the new fandom members, ok? If you can't do that, then just shut down your computer and go back to your cave enjoying all alone the fact that you knew Watchmen before the film.

115. I read it. I just had to stop when my eyes started bleeding.

121. What didn't you like in it? I was a bit wtf? too at the beginning when NPH was just talking to the camera but it got better very quickly.

129. I have to disagree. Ok, Martha wasn't well written in the beginning of the 3rd season but in the end, she saved the world, right? And unlike lots of american tv shows where a black guy can only date a black girl (it's like a rule or something), Martha is with a white guy and if I remember, Sally Sparrow flirted with the black cop. If you add the bisexual vibe to that, I say you have a pretty open minded show. I mean, it's British!

145. I wouldn't go as far as you but when I watched this movie (the first) I fell so in love with him.

157. Lol, that's not a bad remark. I never noticed that :)

193. Scars were never original. And the Joker didn't have them in the comics so I don't think any fans will bitch about the Comedian's.

102: Oh god, that's now what I'd do if I had a time machine. Seriously amazing.
113: Hahaha, I am rather inclined to agree with this.
PotO: Wankiest fandom in the universe™
183: OMG unexpected BB9 secret! Don't really agree though :(

103. It's mildly funny that this secret is hopelessly unoriginal.

Personally, one of the things I like MOST about fandom is that it gives you a chance to consider dozens of different interpretations of a character, or how the characters would act in innumerable situations the canon will never feature. And if you're in a fandom like Doctor Who, there's about a million side characters for people to go back and mess with a little.

That doesn't mean I don't cringe a bit when I see, "this is a bit of an experiment..." in the author's notes. That's almost NEVER good.

Consider the idea that what a lot of fics gain in originality, they lose in the utter FAIL of execution.

109. I was just at a loss when I saw this one. I had to wonder what the movie was about. Like, did it feature people in wheelchairs wheeling after able-bodied people while wielding axes, or what?

So I looked up the plot summary on Wikipedia, and yikes. I can see how that might seriously traumatize a nine-year-old. I saw one of the Ghostbusters movies when I was three, and didn't really get over it until I was 16 or so, and that was far less frightening than this movie sounds.

That being said, the movie you saw was a work of fiction. (And clearly has a point beyond, "side-show performers hack somebody up.") Perhaps it would help to watch it again? Seeing it again with the distance of several years might give you a different perspective on the film as a whole (and therefore your reaction to it).

Beyond that...see a therapist who works with phobias?

129. No shit.

130. AAAH IT'S A SMUTFIC GET IN THE CAR. Um, smut can be smart, in-character and revealing. Genre snobbery is fail.

151. You should hook up with 130, you guys could sneer at fandom together for having an interest in sex.

1) How is "objectification," not a moral grey area to begin with? I have yet to find someone who can explain to me why sexual objectification is automatically evil.

2) Maybe YOU would be bothered. Personally, given how intrusive fame is, I can't see too many pluses to it beyond large numbers of people thinking you're hot and wanting to fuck you.

168. I'd feel bad about how much I grinned over her swipes at Rose...

And then I remember the whole period between, "Runaway Bride," and "Partners in Crime," where the vast majority of Whofic which even MENTIONED Donna (other than in fix-it fics) portrayed her as an indescribably shallow, mindless, petty screeching harpy who the Doctor just has on board so he's not too lonely.

And then I don't feel very guilty anymore.

I used to not like Paris, but I'm warming up to her a bit in recent months. I have a pretty good feeling Repo's going to change a lot of people's minds about her acting ability.

... She is still a blithering idiot though. But does anyone really think she doesn't realize this? She's a spoiled, stupid whore, but at least she goes about it honestly.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-23 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
103. I bet you would have more people agreeing with you than you think. Just no one wants to say anything.

107. I agree.

110. I agree here, too.

115. *buzzer sound* wrong. the biggest wankers are those who seem to think their side is the ONLY ONE OMG. Especially in watching the fans of the books attack...ATTACK anyone who may have read it and disagreed that they were any good.

118. speaking as a writer who did that? no you won't. most people in fandom circles are just not interested in reading original work. they want your fanfiction.

128. ...whatever. cheers for restraint?

129. I guess if you look hard enough you'll find something to be offended at in anything you see, read, hear or do.

130. You are exactly the kind of BNF that people hate. And I would be willing to bet that your mentor role model BNFs would hate to be associated with your wanker, elitist attitude bullshit self.

You've just smeared yourself, honey.

148. LOL me, too!

150. wow, you're a douchbag.

153. *shudders* knock yourself out.

155. LOL troll.

169. that's Hollywood for you. if they think it will sell, they butcher anything.

sad thing? it's usually true. it gets butchered but sells like hotcakes.

171. well, if she didn't behave like a whiny loser bitch cunt who's family fortune was what kept her going for so long that she never had to develop a likeable personality...

179. two of the most wanked on secrets here in one secret.

am I the only one who smells troll?

188. rock on, secretmaker. rock on.

190. now THIS is a Joker!secret I can get behind!

198. or how about 'not watching a show just for the OMGBUTTSECKS subtext'? not everyone wears slashgoggles.

Eeek, I've been trying to find copies of those books for about twelve years, and now that I've finally got my sweaty little hands on them I'm putting off reading them because the anticipation feels so gooood! Every time I see them sitting on my bedside table I get a little thrill.

Re: 172

(Anonymous) 2008-08-26 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh! The anticipation must be amazing!

I lucked into my copies. My mother gave me the first set I had, years after she'd read them herself. I still have that first one; a battered first edition hardcover that lost its slipcover years ago. The second, though, was a paperback and I had to hunt down a new copy when it reached the point that the pages were falling out from too many readings.

Enjoy it when you get to them. They're well worth the wait.

107: uhh actually some of 'we pre-movie fandom' would like you to shut the fuck up lol. not only is your rage ineffectual it's stupid. WHO CARES? as long as they don't make him nail adrien in the MOVIE it's all good.

172: awww man, here I am on page 14 and you're probably not going to see this... I loved those books. I loved the Thomas Covenant books too, but they are admittedly pretty grim by comparison. I'm so glad I'm not the only one!

Re: 172

I see it! I'm crazy with obsessive curiosity like that. I'm also utterly thrilled to find a fair number of people seconding the love of these books. Most of my fantasy reading friends haven't ever heard of these, and I felt very alone in my adoration.

WHAT'S WITH ALL THE RACIST SECRETS. Some people just don't like the character because of their PERSONALITY lol. O_o

129. ... even if Martha was white, latina, asian, whatever, lol I still wouldn't like her (at least during season 3), because she was so annoying in her flirting with the Doctor when he was clearly not interested and still sad over Rose. Martha was better in season 4 though, when she got over him and finally showed she could kick some ass.

155. ... Whoaa. I hate Twilight as well but I wouldn't commit a crime over it lol

168. Yeah I got pretty mad when I read this comic too. No matter how cute it's drawn ;;

181. *sigh* I don't think the DBSK fangirls will ever stop liking them though lol.. as overrated as they are.

185. Err I didn't even forcus on the race thing lol, I just personally don't like her because she's naive and kind of slow.. ;;

138. I don't know why, but this secret made me go "aww".

125

(Anonymous) 2008-08-23 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone misses her.

Yes, she was a pretty good a very prolific fanfic writer, but she dropped everything and everyone who was supposedly her "friend" on the 'net and in real life for some guy, just to be in a relationship -- no matter that the relationship is very unhealthy. At least that's the impression I get from those who knew her better. She just stopped posting and going online one day. She stopped returning emails and phone calls. She stopped caring about her website which is the largest and most popular Buffy crossover site around. She even stopped trying to get her original work published. She dropped EVERYONE who knew her before, even her real life friends, for a controlling bastard who got her into a bad scene.

It hasn't affected my enjoyment of fandom. Now I just think she's a flaky bitch who never cared as much as she said she did.

OMFG. "Freaks" is one of my favorite movies. If you've never actually seen it, you should find it and watch it. I can't believe there's a secret about it. :O

I TOTALLY AGREE! There is not shame to be had here, they are so very, very, very ... shippable. (I maintain it's meant to be canon ...)

I totally thought no one would know the fandom at all XD

I feel your pain. Everybody loves it and I really can't stand it. Actually, I really don't like Tom Hanks. But since becoming a CSI:NY fan I still like Gary Sinise in it

[identity profile] sundayschild.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel exactly the same way. And it weirds me out, because I loved Doctor Who first. But I just -- well. You know.
