Should one really be surprised that there is a lot of objectification going on then?

I'm secretly hoping that she will come back with a Geass like what happened in that sidestory manga wikipedia told me about, in which she now has the power to see the future and is followed by a manifestation of her repressed anger and kicks everyone's ass. I agree. I don't know if it was on purpose or not but having Martha be the rebound who will always mean less to the doctor totally played into the idea where blond, white is way more desirable than color. It's like her season wasn't even about her, it was about how much the doctor missed rose. Such a shitty deal. Of course it wouldn't be a big deal at all if there'd been black companions before who the doctor felt as much for as they did for him but there hasn't. That's racism for ya.

God, just because a character is black doesn't mean everything involved in her storyline is related to her race. And I don't think Rose is meant to be some Aryan queen or something just because she's OMG BLONDE. I know racism is systemic and very much alive these days, unfortunately, but I'm sick of people reading racism into everything remotely bad that happens to a black character on TV.

Like I said if there'd been black companions in the past whose primary purpose wasn't a place holder for some other companion then Martha's storyline would have been fine and dandy but there isn't. Instead the one black companion was also the one who seen as less than her predecessor by the Doctor. Why was it the black companion that had a huge crush on the doctor that wasn't reciprocated at all? Why was it the black companion that really didn't seem to emotionally connect with the doctor? Why was it the black companion that when she left the doctor was like "oh well, don't let the door hit you on the way out" like he didn't really care whether she stayed or left? I'm just say that in light of history of the desirability of white vs. black that all those things sends a really bad message. To you it was just one of those things but to me it was more of the same stuff you always get from tv shows and movies. I get tired the same old message and was expecting more from doctor who so how the martha/doctor relationship played out was a huge disappointment.

It's true, fandom hates any form of originality. Some people are so pigeon-holed into their vision of canon that seeing it in any kind of 'new' way is at worst flame-inviting, or at least, ostrasization.

This can be extremely frustrating, especially when you are looking for more than the *me too! squee!* phenomenon >.

Um, a lot of people hate Twilight. A lot of people would do the Joker. Fandom would not kill you if they knew; in fact, it most likely would not phase them. (Seriously, have you not been reading fandom secrets?) I don't get it. :/
