Re: Maybe Shassie?

It doesn't make you racist but there is a clear pattern, historically, in fandom, with ships involving black characters being less popular. And Shawn/Gus is an example of that.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I loooooove historical adventure movies!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s fair - also though, since it’s anon, so there is no way of knowing how many people are making the shitty comments. It could be users who also are nice, are contrary jerks. I think that it’s enough of a phenomenon that it’s fair to say anonymity can bring out a mean petty side of people.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I think most people are chill, but we do have trolls. Especially recently.

Is this...something I wrote or are OP and I on the same wavelength.

Reylo isn’t m/m and the non white alternative is FinnRey.

Re: Kudos!

3%

Not sure how useful this statistic is though, since places like AO3 count multiple hits from the same person as a hit. And you can't kudos things every time.

Re: Kudos!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
*multiple hits from the same person as multiple hits, I mean. So one person reading 3x counts as 3, which makes the ratio not mean much

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I've betaed for friends before for this exact reason. Their writing wasn't a nightmare of bad punctuation and grammar. I just liked getting a sneak peek. Some of them were popular enough that they'd get other beta offers too, for much the same reasons.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
If it’s Reylo I’m very disappointed that OP didn’t use the sand picture.

Re: Maybe Shassie?

I think they probably do mean Kylux, because it *was* a big stupid Tumblr thing when TFA came out. It's just that it seems like that's a million years ago now.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but:

"On a regular basis, I'd get PMs from people volunteering to beta for me..."

Right from the secret. Of course, "regular basis" could mean "once a year".

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think most people here are at least capable of being chill most of the time.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What fandoms were you in? Actually, what universe were you in? I've never known anyone to be so polite about badly written, badly edited fanfic.

Every fandom I'm been in, if people thought your fic was poorly written they didn't say "Oh um, hey, do you need a beta? I'll beta for you." They say "Your fic sucks. Learn to spell and maybe do us all a favor and get a beta."

inspired by 5 - Do you get beta offers from strangers?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you accept them? I can't really imagine accepting for the same reasons the OP of the secret listed. Working with someone like that requires more knowledge of that person and their abilities, IMO. I have regular betas, and they're my regulars for a reason.

Re: Kudos!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's meaningful for comparing things on the same platform, at least.

Re: The Umbrella Academy

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Just finished episode 3. The plot isn't that interesting so far but the vibe is pleasant and the cast is good.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, not everyone would behave the same way if they weren't going to be held accountable for what they say. You hit the nail on the head when you said anonymity feeds your contrarian streak - the people who "turn into" asshole when they're anonymous always had those impulses, the anonymity just lets them act on them without fearing the repercussions.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Imo there's lots of nice anons that leave positive or neutral replies to a thread. Then every so often a jerk anon that starts a long argument chain replying to multiple other anons and it's pretty clearly the one person replying to everyone arguing. So if there's a thread of 100 comments, 9 are nice replies, 1 is a nasty one, and the 90 other comments are various people arguing with the nasty one... lol

I'm sure the same person could be a jerk one day about something then nice another day about another thing, but I find the ratio of *people* looks consistently in favor of 'people who are being nice that day, or at least started off being nice'. The ratio of comments on the other hand can swing all kinds of ways

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Being contrarian isn't necessarily an asshole move though. I think a lot of people just go with the flow because it's easier to trust what other people say without looking into it for themselves. And let's be real, most of the commentary people make on the hot button issue of the day has maybe a hour of research behind it at best.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's definitely true that people on this comm are willing to get into long and, uh, forthright arguments about stupid things with people who probably aren't arguing in good faith. And boy am I guilty of that. But it's not the same thing as being a jerk yourself.

Re: Kudos!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It's infinite as I've never published a fic.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Yeah, exactly! If the fics were that bad, SOMEONE would tell you, even if it was just to complain or point out the errors to you. And where are so many people eager to edit badly written fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
OP good that you admit being anonymous makes you a 'jerk' but to me that's the whole problem with the internet. People can act horrifically under the guise of anonymity. If you wouldn't speak to the person that way without anonymity, I'd reconsider whether it's worth doing it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
In every group (ie. fandom, a fashion movement, alternate lifestyles, whatever), there are a people who zero in on the cool kids who everyone knows and try to find ways to kiss their ass so they can be part of the cool kids inner circle and get special status within the group and be considered cool themselves.
