Worst/weirdest takes you've seen

What're some of the weirdest, stupidest, or otherwise most head-scratching bits of fandom discourse you've seen? Brought to you by one too many "hot takes" that made it clear the poster hadn't actually watched what they were complaining about.

S/O to that tumblr post mocking that bit in "Bend it Like Beckham" where Joe says that he does, in fact, know what it's like to be discriminated against for his family background, on account of being an Irish bloke in England.
All these Americans going on about how incredibly white it is, lololol, obviously he has *no* idea what he's talking about, how are Irish people discriminated against?

All unaware that a) US race relations aren't the same as UK race relations; b) The Troubles ended just four years before the film came out; and c) "Bend it Like Beckham" was directed by Gurinder Chadha, produced by Gurinder Chadha and Deepak Nayare, and written by Paul Mayeda Berges, Guljit Bindra and Gurinder Chadha.
There are zero white people on that list

I actually saw a reblog of that tumblr post with an addition informing the mockers that they had no damn idea what they were talking about.

Irish people still get treated like shit even today, honestly there is a lot of fucking awful shit directed at them, and the Welsh/Scottish that is just there as background radiation while growing up in England. Along with the usual racism as well.

It's fun.

There was a time when Irish immigrants were treated like crap in the US, too. They should have known that and been able to extrapolate that it could still be true elsewhere.

Really? REALLY. For fucks sake. I'm so sick of Americans assuming that all European countries have the same race relations as them. Especially Britain, which they seem to think is a carbon copy of the US.

An adult being attracted to an adult playing the role of a teenager is a pedophile.

I've seen some stupid hot takes about "pedophilia" in fandom but this one takes the cake.

That Tony Stark didn't know that his weapons were being used to kill civilians. No, he definitely knew because he'd have to be a fucking moron not to. He just A) didn't care until it personally affected him B) was fine with weapons killing people as long as they were being killed by the right people.

Uh, I'm pretty sure the movie makes clear he didn't know. It was willful ignorance, and he was an idiot not to ask. But he didn't know. I'd say because he chose not to know. But at least I believe the movie intended the message to be he didn't know.

NAYRT

I think any reasonable, intelligent person in Tony Stark's position should have known that it was at least a strong possibility, even if they didn't specifically investigate it. On the other hand, ideological blindness is a thing.

AYRT

I agree that he should have known. And I can even buy that somewhere in his subconscious he suspected. He just didn't care enough to investigate and to actually learn. I don't think him not knowing makes him any more sympathetic because he should have known.

You cannot make weapons and not know they are being used on civilians. Like, even people who are not super up to date on the news know that the US military kills a lot of civilians as collateral damage.

I think "willful ignorance" is basically on the level with "knew it but was in denial". You don't have to be a genius to understand that if you manufacture weapons, they're going to be used in war, and that war has collateral damage in the form of civilians. Denial is not the same thing as "didn't know".

D'you mean, like, because the US military kills civilians like it's a competition? That he should have realised that the military-industrial complex is inherently amoral, it destroys countless lives every day, and that profiting from it is bad?
Cos, not that I'm quite gonna disagree there, but you do know how much money Marvel's gotten from the US military?

It's a lot.

Marvel should stop taking money from the US military.

I mean, I know they're not going to, but they should.

I'm not american and I'd like to ask why would military pay Marvel? Are they buying comics for bored outpost personnel?

I ... actually agree with this, though I winced a bit because it's blunter than I would have phrased it. It is fairly clear in IM1/IM2 particularly that Tony grew up a) with an ideal of patriotic bloodshed, given Howard's WWII experiences and worship of Cap, plus his own involvement in the military/arms business from childhood up, and b) without any direct experience of actual bloodshed himself. So he's perfectly fine with some vague nebulous idea of people, even civilians, dying by his weapons somewhere foreign in what he'd consider legitimate wars, right up until he has to watch somebody get blown up by one right beside him. Then he gets tortured himself, giving him a much broader and more in-depth appreciation for pain and mutilation and long-term disability resulting from weapon injuries. Then he realises that his fellow prisoner, the man helping him and keeping him alive, had family die essentially by Tony's oblivious hands, and helped him anyway. And then he learns that Obie's been selling things under the table willy-nilly without his knowledge, and the idea of a 'legitimate war' gets shot out from under him as well (though I think it's to his credit that he'd already shut down weapons by then, that even before he learned about Obie the experience of violence alone was enough to convince him that even 'legitimate' wars weren't enough of an excuse).

So ... yeah. The thing he didn't know was that Obie was selling his weapons to terrorist organisations, which he did take badly. He probably did know, intellectually, that civilians were dying by his weapons all along. It just didn't really mean anything until he had to witness it personally. Which was why everything about Yinsen struck him as hard as it did, and why he's spent his whole life since that moment trying to make up for it.

That Melkor was an okay guy and that if Eru had just allowed him to create something, everything would be great. Except, no. Even if you think his original motivations were justified, Melkor was a villain who did terrible things. I get takes on the actual devil that view him as good. But Melkor? Melkor tortured and murdered so many beings. And creating orcs out of elves through torture? There is nothing that could ever make Melkor a good guy. Whatever you think of his motivations, he's pure evil. So's Sauron for that matter. I like Sauron. But he's evil and horrible.

Oh, speaking of Sauron, the takes that say he only became what he did because he was abused by Melkor. Nope. First off, I don't buy their relationship as abusive because Sauron is full of himself and would never tolerate it. He was absolutely loyal, and being the selfish, arrogant guy he is, would not be that loyal to someone who abused him. I just don't see it. But even if Melkor did abuse him, that in no way justifies all the horrifying things Sauron did. Again, I love the guy. Such a great character. But he's evil. Very, very evil.

I was just reading a thread on Twitter that started off as "Unintentional Fridge Horror" but sort of mutated into Woker Than Thou
Someone expressed the opinion that Sarastro, in Mozart's The Magic Flute, is a creepy cult leader and kidnapper (true, insofar as it goes) and furthermore, that the Queen of the Night should have won (what).
No.
The story is quite sexist, and certainly has, just, so much background racism; but no.
The Queen of the Night not only promises her daughter to the first handsome prince to stroll along, but once she is reunited with her daughter she tries to force said daughter to murder her dad. When she is refused, she threatens to disown her kid. Later, she knowingly promises that same daughter to a would-be rapist.

Maybe, just m a y b e, Sarastro had good reason for the whole 'parental abduction' deal!

This. There is sexism involved in how the story was written. But in the story, as written, the Queen of the Night is terrible. She is a villain.

Some people are claiming that Monica Rial and Jamie Marchi made up those allegations against Vic Mignogna because they wanted to steal his roles. Like, WTF?

He has a brainwashed cult of followers he's been very carefully grooming for years, of course they're going to attack anyone they perceive as against him. While it certainly doesn't excuse them for the behavior, my honest first reaction for the Rangers is just pity. He used girls that needed to feel like they were a part of something. It's horrible.

It's hard to steal roles when they're over a decade too late, I have to say...

I recall some years back, there was a person in one of my fandoms who seemed to believe as gospel truth that a fairly new comic series was the worst thing to ever blight our fair franchise, and spent a lot of time trying to tear it apart. Their crowning glory was when they made a long post ripping on the latest issue as having bad characterization because the characters treated each other differently now than in the beginning of the series. They casually mentioned in the middle of their rant that they had skipped over the three issues where the characters have a series of Important Bonding Moments. They didn't take kindly to all the people informing them of their mistake, either. It was a hoot.

As a bonus, they wrote fic specifically to "fix" all the problems they saw with the comic, and it was godawful.

That Sirius Black and Lily Evans were BFF's in any way... Especially before James and Lily got together. Lily kinda hated James for a reason, and Sirius was literally every example of that hate.
I don't mean they never got along at all- but from the literal handful of paragraphs we know about them, it just didn't happen.
