I am shocked that people seriously thought 1) Tony was going to die in space or 2) Steve and Tony were not going to meet up.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
After the new trailer came out, I saw a lot of Tumblr posts gloating about Tony not dying in space and how the “antis” were so wrong, and I’m like “wait, there were actually people that really thought he was going to? Seriously?” I mean, I don’t consider myself “Team Iron Man” or anything, but that plot twist could be seen coming from, well, space.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What antis were saying he was going to die in space? Or was it one of those times where the 'anti-' antis say something was totally happening but wasn't? I expect Captain Marvel is going to save him and bring him to Earth.

People who still gloat about anything to do with Tony Stark are exhausting.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't it the Tony stans who insisted he was going to die in that scene and took it as more woobie bait? Either way, they're insufferable.

If Tony goes out it was never not gonna be in a blaze of glory after having a significant influence on the plot. I can't believe the amount of people saying "he better not die in the first 5 minutes!" Some of them were probably joking but still...as if Marvel Studios would basically throw away the poster character of the franchise like that. It would be extremely bold and unusual of them if they did (and I did have a split second reaction of "no way!" when Thanos stabbed him in IW), but they're just never going to.

Yeah...it's one thing to do it to Loki but Tony...? Not gonna happen.

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I didn't think one way or another, but I was really hoping for them to make up in IW and... they didn't. (They weren't even on the same planet!) So I just lowered my expectations and figured I'd better prepare for the worst. But the thought of it still made me sad. That's a breakup going on three years (yes, I realize other things are longer than three years, but the fighting-for-half-the-life-in-the-universe thing kind of makes it all urgent, you know?).

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I knew we'd never be rid of Stark that easily. I'm not convinced we'll ever be rid of him, period. I only hope that the reconciliation isn't crappy, but I won't hold my breath.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's totally going to be crappy. :(

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
how can they reconcile when they were literally never friends

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
*whispering so that the Stony shippers don't stone us* Agree so much.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
They may not have been best friends, but they were definitely friends. Hell, if you don't think that then they were definitely good coworkers. They had a huge break up and now must reconcile.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think 'good coworkers' falls under the category of continued harassment, mocking of Steve's ptsd, then making it incredibly difficult for him to adapt to modern times by belittling him every time he tried to deal with something new.

I think they were friends. Not best friends, like in the comics, or in fanfic, but friends. I saw someone comment once, though, that in Tony’s head they’re closer (or were pre-CW) than they are in Steve’s head, and I think that’s accurate. Steve likes and respects Tony, but doesn’t entirely trust him, at least on a personal level, with the things/people that matter most to him.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly this.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
If I'm 100% honest, I've hated their interactions since the first Avengers movie, and no Avengers movie since has made it any better. Much, much worse, usually. So ... I'd have been fine with them never 'reconciling'? They just never worked well together, at least not in the MCU. I would have been 100% fine with them existing at opposite ends of the plot forever (if, you know, they lived that long). I thought that way back in Avengers 1 when comics-style Stony was huge and the movie just never backed it up, and then AoU and Civil War happened and just ... They're a trash fire. They have been from the start. When they're not in each other's way they're actively bad for each other (hi, Civil War, how are you).

Let Steve hang around with Nat and Sam and Bucky, let Tony hang around with Rhodey and Bruce and Stephen, let them pilot separate teams and work together on big stuff OUTSIDE each other's chain of command, with backup and input from other people. If they want to hate each other on a personal level let them do it. There are ten thousand heroes in the MCU now. They don't have to keep shoving these particular two together.

(No, I don't have strong feelings about this, why do you ask?)

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this 100%!

Also, I went into Avengers 1 shipping Stony and came back out saying, nope, not in the MCU.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much.

I'm a bitter ex Stony shipper - although I still ship them in the comics - who believes that they would be much happier far away from each other. Especially Stark, whom I usually greatly dislike, who's still been treated dreadfully by Cap in Civil War.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Civil War killed any semblance of a hope I might have had, though I freely admit that it's because Cap hit a massive trigger of mine. My sister and I were discussing it recently, in the context of video games and choice making, and we basically realised that her basis for grey-area 'moral' choices is usually personal loyalty, while mine is usually truth vs lies. Not necessarily better or worse in either case, just different priorities. The moment Tony asked 'Did you know?' and Steve said yes, he was dead to me. I would have cut him out that second. Someone makes a lie to me of that magnitude, by omission or otherwise, and there is no coming back from that. There's no way I'm trusting them again, not on any personal level.

So, yeah. That moment did not help the MCU's case any. Put it that way.

I'd be cool with this. As someone who never read the comics or much MCU fanfic, I've never cared about their friendship enough to care whether they even have a friendship. I find the characters entertaining individually, but have no strong feelings about how they should interact.

Yeah I was hoping to see something at least similar to their comic-book relationship in the movies but it... never really got there. They didn't need to be bff's 5eva or anything, but I would have liked them at least liking one another and it just never felt that it ever got further than 'we save the world together sometimes'.

They each have their people and that's fine, but I'm over the movies trying to make me believe they mean all that much to each other or were ever 'leaders' of the Avengers team.

This thread is fascinating to me because usually this com comes down entirely on the side of Steve and says Tony was completely unreasonable. I actually think both acted in ways that made sense. I get why Steve wouldn't tell Tony because loyalty is Steve's highest value, and Bucky comes first always. And I get why Tony would be pissed because it was his parents, and he was watching the murder.

I don't agree that they can't make up, though. I think that fighting side by side again could allow them the opportunity to make up. Even at the end of Civil War, we see that they both have a level of understanding of each other. They aren't complete enemies, and they know it. So I think they could be friends again.
