*thinks of all the people on here I've seen who are really bitter about fluffy, cute fic and talk about how awful it is*

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
...shit, I think you're right. I was sitting there thinking, 'uuuh, Hogwarts staff and Death Eaters doing the cancan? Romilda Vane is the real Chosen One? Dobby kills Dumbledore?' And none of them matched The Thing With The Snack Trolley.

Legit do not see how that would change things. I'm pointing out you can like a character and want to see them redeemed and - yes! - even want them to get it on with the protagonist, without feeling the need to pretend they're other than they are: A Big Ol' Dickhead.

It's possible for there to be a middle ground between being a saint or being the devil . I think most Kylo fans don't think he's right, but they don't think he's evil either and are rooting for his redemption, which imo the movies are pretty obviously building up to.

Usually I avoid spoilers for things I want to see because I feel compelled to respect the narrative flow.

I am now amused that coming across a certain spoiler for Endgame -- which I wasn't interested in and hadn't planned to see -- now makes me want to go see it.

You are right, there is a middle ground. Personally, I'm a fan who thinks he's evil and is a fun character exactly because of that, and who's hoping no redemption. Or, if there is, at least I hope he lives and has to spend the rest of his life hated and having to make up for what he did rather than a redemption=death storyline. There are a very wide variety of fans, and you can't lump us all with one brushstroke.

And the secret maker is speaking about one specific type of Kylo fan. Not that I actually think those fans shouldn't be allowed to fan how they want. I don't agree with their interpretations, but they should be allowed to do them. But the secret isn't about all Kylo fans, just one specific type.

Scale. Nitpicking is a type of criticism, but a very superficial one. Nitpicks are done because you enjoy complaining where as (good) criticism is usually done out of desire to see improvement. This usually reflected in how substantial it is, since nitpicks are a bunch of minor unrelated things where as good crit tackles a persistent issue.

Considering people want to axe murder the Russos for the "first gay character in the MCU and it's no-one you'd gues!!! :D :D :D "... uuuuuh no. Disagree.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I don't know how comparable the situation is to Kylo. Is the guy just an evil dick, was he manipulated and abused, what's his relationship with the hero like, etc?

Like... FTM?

Me too OP. The people around me didn’t have “bad” relationships per se, but very uptight protestant, emotionless heterosexual relationships that just seemed boring and mandatory. and the alternative is romance media which is often rife with stalking, predatory, and dubiously consensual behavior. Fanfic has given me a better model than any other medium.

Nah. Dumbledore's reveal wasn't great, but consider how many major characters in children's media were gay 12 years ago.

And also the movie wasn't that good.

NAYRT but what is with you?

What makes a movie "good"?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s really cool, OP. All I learned from fanfic was the different ways people can have almost improbable sex.

So you think that people who criticize Ariana Grande are only doing so because they like complaining, and also that they wouldn't complain about her if she was was a man?

Awww... I love Tony. I like everyone else too, but Tony is my favorite.

Like 99% of review podcasts I listen to talk about spoilers. I am apprised) surprised you are able to find so many that don't.

*deep sigh*
He had a difficult childhood, got superpowers when his friends were murdered and he nearly died of suffocation, his home was destroyed by a monster, he was captured by brainwashing secret police, he escaped, moved halfway around the world, and promptly became another asshole gang leader.
He tried to kill the protagonist the first time they met (in an impersonal, 'flee or be destroyed', sort of way), and she beat him. He tried more enthusiastically to kill her, and she beat him. Some time later they worked together to save the world from utter annihilation.

Happy?

It's a good point, and she's really made up for it by making sure that he's depicted as textually, unquestionably gay in the movies made more recently in a different political and social climate

People would still complain, but it'd be nowhere near as intense or persistent if she were a man. Additionally, most of it has to do with her appearance, which automatically would be de-emphasized.
