Music thread

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-06-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Talk about music. Anything about music. What are you currently listening to? What music to you really love or really hate? Is there a song stuck in your head that you can't forget? Is there a song you are really sick of?

Whatever you want to talk about with music.

If I ever win big at the scratchcards, the only thing I particularly want to buy is an alto clarinet.

Been listening to a bunch of opera recently. Really loving Richard Strauss, Rosenkavalier is fucking amazing. It's really cool to get a sense for what I do and don't like.

I'm glad they're happier now, but wow do I not really like the new music by Marina + Lana Del Rey.

I miss the old Americana Gloom of LDR and the synth-scared pop of MATD.

It's weird. There's a whole lot of music i really like (Alice Cooper, Styx, Rush, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Eagles, CCR, etc...) But I rarely, if ever, listen. Music is great but sometimes it's just so much *noise*, and I can't deal.

My daughter sometimes plays me something, or like someone here rec'd a vid and I watched and enjoyed (that new Taylor Swift song), but in general...I just don't listen to music hardly ever.

Squeenix just put a ton of Final Fantasy soundtracks up onto Spotify, and I've been going bananas making mood playlists out of my favorite tracks from each of them.

As I'm listening through them again, I'm realizing that I talk a little bit of shit on Uematsu for leaning too hard on certain musical motifs, but I have to respect that he's made this many really strong tracks over this many years. He does really well in utilizing the musical software of the system, and he makes a lot of really memorable individual songs. I do still think his overall sound suffers. He's not as good at making an overall picture with his music like some of his contemporaries (Yoko Shimomura comes to mind), but I really respect that he's made these tunes that really endure.

I actually really love new age. :( I get a lot of crap for it, but so much of it is so nice! I really love the focus on melody and the "softness" of it; even when I'm not actively relaxing or something I like to listen to it just because it activates my imagination so well. It's so easy to imagine soft/emotional/wonderous/fantastical sorts of scenes, which are my favorites. And there's so much variety! Idk, I think it gets a bad rap as a genre because everyone just associates it with either "spa" drones or Enya (who I also love, but I understand not enjoying her).

I really wish more musicals would release their filmed recordings post closing date, like it's the only way a lot of people will ever see them. I don't see any downside to this for the people making the musicals either. Disney did it for Newsis, and it got a lot more people interested in both the original movie, and the show. Buying the cast recordings is not the same since you don't get to see/hear a good portion of the storytelling, and even catching a show on tour can be really hard.

The Classic station of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (writing the name in full because of the other ABC) has a Classic 100 survey every other year or so, covering different top 100s - piano pieces, bits from operas, chamber music, Baroque music, a bunch of things. This year was composers, and most of the winners were composers I like - even a lot of composers I love! I am still sad, though, that Joe Hisaishi didn't make the cut.
Let me be clear - I'm not surprised he didn't: modern composers are at a disadvantage in this sort of thing, film composers don't get a lot of name recognition unless they're *huge* names like John Williams (who came in at #15) or Hans Zimmer (#59), and he's a non-Western composer too.
I just want more people to hear his work, because I think it's amazing <3

(The whole list, if you're curious, is available here:
https://www.abc.net.au/classic/classic100/archive/search/?year=2019-composers )

Also Fanny Mendelssohn was #83 and Felix Mendelssohn was #12 and I think they should be the other way around >:(

Still listening to Die Ärzte as usual. Also Farin Urlaub Racing Team. Now and then other German rock. Occasionally the Beatles or 80s music.

I almost never listen to the radio. I don't mean there's nothing good on it. I'm sure there is. I just hardly ever do it. That means I don't usually get sick of songs, though I could live without hearing "Shape of You" again.

Job applications, allergy shot, listened to some music. Feeling hormonal, freezing cold, and bleh, so right now I'm curled up with a heating pad and my computer.

Worked, laundry, vacuuming, changed kitty litter, took out garbage and recycling, made bacon and broccoli mac and cheese, and now I'm trapped on OneTopicAtATime's youtube thanks to my bestie.

Just worked and then came home. Things at work are not great at the moment (hopefully they will get better but...I don't know for sure and I hate the uncertainty :( ) and I was in kind of a crappy mood because of it. I'm about to go wash my face and change into pajamas and do something distracting. Not sure if I want to read (I'm reading two books that are both good but not really genres I'm in the mood for right now and I'm debating if I want to start another) or maybe listen to a podcast or watch some YouTube videos. Or maybe watch some Shameless (every other season I've watched as it aired but for some reason I didn't start watching the most recent season until the other day, I have five episodes left).

Allergy question

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-06-25 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Is anyone else allergic to more than one antibiotic? I was previously allergic to penicillin-based antibiotics. I've been on Azithromicin for a sinus infection. Today I started breaking out in what I thought at first was a bug bit but turned out to be hives on the back of my leg. So looks like I'm allergic to this one too. Is this normal?
