138- It actually comes down to budget more than writers looking down on you. Anime is usually made on a rather tight budget, especially for animation, so a lot of the time, they animate what they absolutely have to, and have the characters to talk a lot to tell the story. It's cheaper to anime someone talking than to animate the events said character may be describing. Ever wondered why anime loves it's stock footage? Why the characters' mouths only flaps up and down? Why what we're supposed to believe is a busy street may be full of people just standing there? Budget. It's also not unusual to have amateurs do the job, which leads to certain interesting situations, such as headless!Naruto, or Zoro from One Piece getting skinnier and skinnier during a fight. Unless it's animated by Gonzo, IG Productions, Gainax or to an extent, Kyoto Animation, chances are, an anime series (especially a long running one) will show less than it will tell us, at least in certain plot related parts.

I was actually in a similar situation except... from your sister's perspective. My brother is about a decade older than me and has treated me horribly all my life. Yet, for whatever reason, all I've ever wanted was him to maybe sit down and watch a series with me. In fact, when I was considerably younger, I learned from one of his friends that he liked Fist of the North Star -- so I purposely found someone I could borrow fansubs from and started to watch them whenever he was around.

...Even now, about 6 years after I attempted that, I still wish he would've just sat down and watched even a couple minutes with me so I could at least remember something we did together (something that didn't involve him being an asshole to me, at least.)

If I spend ten hours drawing something, I don't see much of a problem selling a $2.50 print of it for $7. I kinda feel like my time and energy is worth that much, at least.

Also, not that you care, but the vast majority of Artist Alley types are lucky to break even at a con, even if it's a local one. An AA table mostly just allows us to be able to afford going to the con in the first place.

And really, nothing's stopping fic writers from printing up books, particularly when the property in question wasn't originally text. Except worry that no one would buy them, I suppose.

You're absolutely right... in that fan writers should worry about no one buying their printed stories. There is no demand for prints of fanfiction that I know of, and since the trade-off is not the same, you can say that fan authors and fan artists would not be catering to the same market if they chose to sell their fan works. There is really no market for fanfiction, but if there were, I'm certain that it would be sold - if there's a way to make money, it's pretty much impossible to prevent people from pursuing it.

But just because they can, does it mean they should? Everyone who goes to a convention has to shoulder the costs - the fact that fan artists have a means to alleviate the burden of expenses already gives them an advantage over your average fan. Never mind fic writers (though I think that some degree of effort goes into writing fanfic, even if I don't know from experience), what about cosplayers who presumably spend money and effort on their costumes on top of con-going expenses? Sure, the artist makes a physical contribution to the fandom, but if they get paid for it, would that still be in the spirit of fandom?

Of course, fan artists have to pay in order to set up a AA table, which is an extra cost most con-goers don't have to worry about. But the only reason a commercialized AA exists is because of the market for fan art - and the only point I want to make is that that I don't support that market.

104. It will be interesting to see if you find that teaching suits you for more personal (i.e., you-centric) reasons than the connection to your beloved character. Teaching takes a lot of energy and passion to fuel, and if you don't love it for its own sake, it's exhausting and often frustrating work.

I agree with this phrasing =D I mean, furries freak if someone steals their character. RPers get really unhappy if their char concept is ganked (self included--my WoD chars take a lot of time!). I don't see why officially copyrighted works should be treated with LESS respect than informally protected ones.

If she just turned thirteen the next few years might be some of the hardest for her as they tend to be when you're a teen and having a big sister to look out for her might mean a lot. My sister and I were never close growing up, she didn't treat me very well, and even now I find it hard to be close to her even though we've become better friends. Sometimes I wish she would come right out and address all those years where she ignored me and wanted nothing to do with me and wasn't there for me. I think you should talk to your sister about this and how you wish things were different. Hopefully you guys can start over but it has to be you who takes the first step.

Post that same secret again sometime and tell us that you made the dark text part happen :) I hope you and your sister work things out!
