Question about Good Omens show

(Anonymous) 2020-04-05 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant to watch the show months ago when it seemed to be everywhere, then kind of forgot about it, and just came across a discussion on Reddit about whether the main characters were a couple or not (the usual "it's obvious, they're totally in love!" vs. "omg they're just friends, why does everyone have to be gay?!" argument) and wanted to get the opinions of people here because I feel like I can trust you guys on fandom-related things more than Reddit.

So what do you guys think? I haven't read the book or looked too much into the show because I don't want spoilers about specifics, but is this just another instance of slash fans getting their hopes up just to be disappointed in the end, or is there actually something to the "it's totally canon!" argument for once? I'm still disappointed by/sad at another show's recent no homo-ness and really don't want to get invested in a m/m ship just to be let down by another queerbaiting situation.

Re: Question about Good Omens show

(Anonymous) 2020-04-05 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely not explicitly queer. If you demand textual proof of gayness, it will not satisfy you. Interpreting the characters as queer is probably the most straightforward reading and I don't think "queerbaiting" is an accurate description but it's not textual.

The relationship isn't romantic or sexual in the show, but if it would have ended that way there would have been enough build up to make it believable. To me, both interpretations of their relationship are equally valid. There's a lot of shipping fodder.

If you're looking for explicit confirmation of the ship in canon then it's not for you, imo.

You can honestly read it as both, but I don’t think there’s explicit confirmation of their relationship being romantic in nature. I did read it as romantic and it didn’t seem like it was queerbaiting. Honestly, their relationship was the only good thing about the show (to me anyway).

Re: Question about Good Omens show

(Anonymous) 2020-04-05 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
They are both definitely something other than cishet straight. That doesn't mean they're gay, though. It's the easiest to say they're queer but queer in that they're just not human and don't do any sexuality and romance in any human way.

Each one does care about the other a lot, arguably more than anyone else, but you can interpret that as romance or friendship.

I've only watched the show but definitely got vibes that this was something way beyond a deep and meaningful friendship but in what way they love one another is definitely open to interpretation. There's also the fact they're an angel and a demon so human situation don't even apply to them....that too allows you to just go with what you prefer because why would they be bothered about human definitions?

Re: Question about Good Omens show

(Anonymous) 2020-04-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO, it can be interpreted either way but it's not as gay as some people seem to think. People's opinions are heavily influenced by the book fandom and the fact that the two main characters are the juggernaut ship. I wouldn't call it queerbaiting, it's just not explicit at all.

Re: Question about Good Omens show

(Anonymous) 2020-04-05 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
you can interpret them as gay as the show doesn't give either of them a random love-interest, but it's not explicitly in the text and imo i think Tennant and Sheen are doing the bulk of the legwork for all the 'gay' readings of the show, the text calls them best friends multiple times and very clearly frames their relationship as more a platonic life-long partnership.

that being said it is a goldmine for shipping fodder so if you don't care that it's not unquestionably canon then you might still enjoy it and their relationship.

They're definitely a couple and demonstrate love for each other. Both the book and the series end with Aziraphale and Crowley realizing that they're more important to each other than their previous relationships with Heaven/Hell.

Whether that's "gay" in Eurocentric shipping terms is a religious question about a work that lampoons religion. My vote is canonically no, but I ship it regardless.

If by chance you're referring to "The Untamed" as being disappointing and queerbaiting, then Good Omens definitely will not satisfy you at all with the supposed m/m.

To be clear, I don't think either show is queerbaiting, for different reasons. But if the former wasn't gay enough for you, the latter will absolutely not be.

Re: Question about Good Omens show

It's not explicitly canon but there's no "no homo" at all.

I wouldn't call it queerbaiting, it's just very easily interpreted as queer with nothing to counter that interpretation.

Also note that the miniseries is based on a one-off novel from 30 years ago, one of the co-authors is now dead, and the show does the entire book. So, while occasionally people talk of a Season 2, I think it's highly unlikely there will be one. That means there's nothing to bait anyone over.

It's not explicitly queer. It's canon that the two characters love each other very much. It's not canon that it's in a romantic/sexual way and I feel like trying to pare it down to whether their love is romantic and/or sexual does a disservice to the nature of their relationship in general.

They are, without a doubt, each other's Most Important People. Does it really matter whether or not they want to bone?

What makes you mock a fic?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-05 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly because I'm afraid my fic will be mocked.

Re: What makes you mock a fic?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-05 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
When it's real clear the fic has an agenda or the author has a huge kink that they haven't acknowledged and think they're cleverly hiding.

I don't care if they're open about it, YKINMK w/e, but the fact that they think other people can't tell makes me cringe.

I feel a little too old and mellow to mock bad characterisation and self-inserts anymore, I'll just move on if something obviously isn't to my tastes.

But if you don't use paragraph breaks and even after realising you forgot to add them don't go back and edit the damned fic, I hope someone takes away your computer!

Re: What makes you mock a fic?

Nothing. If I don't like a fic, I stop reading. I definitely don't go around making fun of it. Never, ever. Both out of respect for the author and the people who liked the fic, and because I don't spend energy on things I don't care about.

Author tracts. I don’t mind if they’re subtle or only take up a few sentences, but I’m not about to sit through a fic where the characters are randomly talking about the evils of abortion.

When it's obvious that the author has never watched the show/read the book and is just repeating the most annoying fandom headcanons.

Awful grammar and/or misspelling the names constantly.

Re: What makes you mock a fic?

Bad characterization (disrespectful of characters/motives, ignoring established character development, not bothering with any character development when forcing character into crazy situations, forcing character into role for the sake of filling a role regardless of who or how they are)

Bad plot twist execution (dumping everything on the reader at the last minute, or pulling random things out of your ass otherwise your story will not work)

Lazy ass proofreading/grammar/spelling (I mean when you're perfectly capable of checking your work and nothing would keep you from doing so.)

Trashing the "other" love interest for the sake of making your OTP look good.

But honestly, if you put a disclaimer or something ("Hey, this is a high school AU and the cast is written like counterparts to XYZ Teen Show, and there's plenty of time travel and Jane Doe being a jealous bitch!") then I'm more likely to either keep that in mind while reading, or just move on to another fic.

And obviously, nothing is 100% perfect. Typos happen, and despite your best research, you might write something inaccurate. I tend to mock things that are done more on purpose. And even lately, I'm too lazy to do that.

Re: What makes you mock a fic?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-05 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
To be clear, I don't "mock a fic" in the sense that I post my opinions anywhere or express them out loud. But there are quite a few things...

* No sign of a basic spellcheck or proofread, no effort to write in a reasonably coherent manner with proper punctuation and capitalization.
* Crappy summary, or excuses about how the author isn't good at writing summaries
* Sloppy/lazy writing - see above
* Weirdly messagey, like the author is trying to teach us a Very Important Lesson and thinks that beating people over the head with it is a good way to do that
* Clear signs that the author has Issues of some kind, whether it's a weird hang up about something or a specific kink that they believe they're being subtle about, but they're not
* Bad sex scenes written with hyperbolic, flowery language that make it sound like the author has never had sex
* Terrible characterization - just like, really off the mark can barely tell who you're writing about because it doesn't sound anything like the character

That said, I wouldn't sweat it. Write the best fic you can, and publish. Not everyone will like it, but that's just life.

Favorite Fanmixes/Fandom Trend Throwbacks

(Anonymous) 2020-04-05 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some of your favorite fanmixes (or 8track mix)?

Or general throwback that you used to enjoy in your Fandom that doesn't really happen these days (either the trend faded, the fandom died, etc.)?

I LOVED fanmixes. I love the "album cover" art, the tracklist (with the downloadable songs), and the fact I would hear new music! I always wanted to make one, but I never mustered up the time or courage to do so. I guess I can always list a playlist with a fic, but shrug.

What about you, F!S?

What the hell Amazon

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-04-06 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
So given the current situation and the need to ship important things, Amazon isn't shipping me my books until May 1. Makes total sense.

Today I changed my mind about a book and went in to cancel it. I was told I couldn't because the order was being prepared for shipping. Even though it isn't being shipped for more than 15 days. What the heck?
