Not for moral reasons (although it does seem like the polite thing to do), but because if I like the artwork I want to know who did it so I can see what else they've done. Especially for Japanese fanartists, since I don't have much luck googling them.

150. Nah, that's pretty much the case for me too. I feel like my knowledge is incomplete unless I've consumed every part of canon I can find....unless some of that canon is really bad, and I choose deliberately to ignore it. (Why hello there, Chrono Cross!)

153. I don't know about 'unacceptable' but it strikes me as kind of shallow. Unless the BIG REVEAL changed their dynamic in some way, it shouldn't really make a difference except for pronoun use and porn.

I'm not a terribly old fan (FUCT was my first FOB album) but I'm more than happy to share my fandom with you. Besides, we need everyone we can to ward off the Pete haterz.

Although I definitely agree that the really snobby fans think that if you weren't on board during the TTTYG era, then you are worthless.

111 - I did the exact same thing. I don't write fic anymore, mostly because once I started realizing how much I sucked, trying to write "properly" just wasn't as fun as the silly dumb way. I still have all my stories and, when I'm in the right mood, it's fun as hell to go back and read that stuff.

123 - I'm sorry, I didn't know there could be such a thing as an elitist Fall Out Boy fan. it's FALL OUT BOY. For a band like that, you shouldn't be getting such flack like that - that really, really sucks. I'm sorry. I had this in Blink-182, which, looking back... well, not a whole lot different of a story really. I feel you.

I feel about as much distaste when an artist makes a huge deal about people daring to touching their art to make icons because it's THEFT!!! as I do when I hear about an author who decides to put a ban on all fanfiction and fanart. Fanartists, you are not Anne Rice and you don't want to be.

I wouldn't defriend people over this, but I kind of understand because it's something that makes me angry, too.

Making icons for your own personal enjoyment from anime, comics, etc. is one thing but-- taking someone's fanart without their permission, cropping and slapping some photoshop on it and then offering that to the public (LJ) and demanding they comment and credit YOU is pretty low. It probably took five minutes for the icon maker to do to the picture that took the artist five hours to make.

I think it's pretty low too, which is why I (usually!) get fanart icons directly from myself or my personal friends. I don't care if people comment or credit me (except that crediting when possible is always nice, both to the iconmaker AND the fanartist, so that people can find more if they like it). I don't get the iconmakers that freak out over commenting and crediting any more than I do the artists who do, though I understand preferring that people do so -- it makes sense to prefer it because it's a good feeling to know you made something that people like, but then, if you randomly find someone using one of your icons/with an icon made from your art, that pretty clearly tells you that you made something that people like, too.
