Going anon here to avoid trolling on my account.

Firstly, I do understand this, and I am all for artists receiving credit for their work. But...here's the frustrating thing -

What makes using a piece of art from an artbook/manga/comic/magazine scan from a source I own different from using an art piece from a doujinshi or other fan art source that I own? I paid good money for both, why can I not use it for a 100x100 icon? Further more, I DO put the doujin circle in my credits, where as I don't put the artist of the original work in.

On a different note I HAVE e-mailed several Japanese doujin circles and asked for permission to use icons. I never received a reply from ANY. And I used the simple english formats that people recommend you use to write to them.

I am definitely FOR crediting. I am definitely FOR asking. But if they choose not to write me back, or if I am unable to find a working e-mail or website, I pretty much stay by "I bought it. I can use it." If you have an issue with that enough to defriend me, that's fine by me. You obviously don't know me anyhow.

I'm of the opinion if I paid money for it, I can use it how I want. What I (hope) this person is referring to is people who gank obvious fanworks off of places like deviantart and use THEM for icons w/o credit.

As an artist that often finds her art used in icons, I can tell you that that's a pretty poor reason to defriend someone. Some of us crazy artists actually like seeing people using our artwork... because it means they like it.

If that is your stand on friendship then why do you not hold the same level for professional artists' work too? They work even harder than most do on fan art. Actors, even... Unless that was your sperm or your egg that made that human being, you can't use their image. Hell, unless the person wrote the binary code themselves for the 100x100 image and created it from scratch, it's the same principal. What is it about internet art that is worth axing communication over? It's a 100 x 100 square picture that generally depicts someone's taste or interest. In my opinion, if an artist can't handle being appreciated without their praises sung (granted, credit is nice... ) then that artist has a very poor sense of real life and does not need to be posting their artwork on the internet to begin with.

Long story short? I'm an artist. I don't condone outright art theft (product sold without my permission or entered into contests/copied and remade for monetary gain) but appreciation is not a crime and I think it is in poor taste from the artist themselves and the fans of the artist to be so uptight about it.

Think about it... if no one used your art for anything, that's not a good sign... generally it means it isn't well received. Not good.

LOL I was wondering if anyone else had picked up on Takarazuka Phantom! XD I love it too! I just wish the DVD wasn't so expensive. Seriously, like $100-$200 US? Wow.

I LOVE Wao Youka and the Cosmos Troupe's version. Not that the other version is worse; it's just that Hanafusa Mari is such a cute, sweet Christine, and Wao is just sooooo perfect.

Yay Takarazuka Phantom! Beats pretty much every other version (except for Chaney-- he was first, and so far the most faithful) to death with a great big stick lol.
