It's the Stephen Colbert Christmas Special. It aired last week. It's not available over the homepage, I think, because it's coming out on DVD.
It's abslolutely freaking hilarious, btw! (Stephen has everyone of his guests under a mistletoe at one point xD)

Yeah, that took me a little bit, too, but that at least sorta makes sense.

How the hell does "big husband" get changed into "it's okay"??? It boggles my mind.

138. Oh good lord. Look, if your sister is honestly having "psychic visions", then no, you do not want to be like that. In fact, you might want to look into getting her psychological help.

131 - Soul love! Personally he's my favourite. :D

150 - I do the exact same thing. I would love to let go and just write but if something niggles at me I have to go and look it up. Little points that people probably wouldn't even notice, it's so silly but I just can't help myself. You're not alone!

118. ...people say that? (I love Calvin & Hobbes to death, but Garfield's still funny.)

Re: 118

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
My guess is the reason for the division is that they represent exact opposites of the comicstrip spectrum.

Calvin&Hobbes was nothing but a labor of love. Watterson drew and improved and always sought to experiment and play with style, to do watercolors when he could, to make hilarious faces, to try cubism, pop-realism, etc. Each strip is an individual work of art. Likewise, the writing is all his own, and nine times out of ten, he wrote because he had something to say.

Jim Davis doesn't even draw Garfield anymore--hasn't for years. He delibrately created a self-sustaining merchandising industry that would be great for t-shirts, greeting cards, and anything else folk could think of. Garfield and the characters are all drawn the exact same now, streamlined into something that anyone can draw. It's pretty much calculated to appeal to the lowest common denominator. There's no art to it, just cold, hard commercial appeal.

Granted, I still think Garfield's funny. Most of the time. It's not poignant or true or memorable or artistic. But it is funny, and I do like reading it. The division comes from one being a work of art, and the other being, well...a thing.
I don't see why people can't like both, though.

158. Lol, Ikr?

[identity profile] candlejack.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
118. What what what!? Fuck, I love both of so much! D:
122. They're... fictional? And he probably trust you a lot, so he doesn't care if you like them? Lmao. :)
125. I'd say the movie is going to fuck it up, but volume three is already doing that, sob. :( I want my old Runaways back. Someone make that man stop drawing for them!
126. OH BOY DRIVING IS SO MUCH FUN AND WORSE THAN COCAINE 'CAUSE ONCE YOU DIG IT YOU'LL NEVER WANT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AGAAAAAIN.
130. Lmfao, that's so true... :( Fuck, now I want to draw human Simba and Mufasa. GAH. Mufasa was such an amazing beast.
133. Aaawww, yeeaaah.
141. OMG, NOIR. Fuck, now I want to re-watch these series.
143. Lol, fandom iz srs bzn.
149. Mine rings-a-ling-a-dings too.
156. Damn, you need to find a better sex partner. o_o
158. When people actually describe the breasts size, it usually means they fucking sucks. Also, huge boobs always bring back problems, why can't people understand that?
162. LMFAO THIS IS THE CUTEST SECRET EVER. I don't understand shit of either, anyway. But it made me laugh for ages,
170. This name i familiar. Hmmm..

143

[identity profile] riprosencrantz.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Question! For srs bzns~

Do the fanartists have permission to use the characters for their art? Do they email/write/molest the original creators and ask permission to draw the fanart, I wonder? Should I email J.K. Rowling and ask her permission to write fanfiction about her characters?

Anne Rice would say YES, BITCH, YOU DO.

...well, I'm one of them. I'm an ex ExIsle inhabitant (went by MagpieDreamer at the time, I think - or some variant of that, anyway). Andromeda was my first ever fandom - I got into it when I was thirteen and stayed with it until i was nearly sixteen. MAN I wrote some bad fanfic. XP

But seriously, I got out in the end, about a year before the show finished, because of how fucked up it was. Maybe because I was overly sensitive (being still just a kid, really, and not quite getting the way fandom works at the time) but GOD all the bitching and moaning over classic!drom versus nu!drom - ugh. In the end I couldn't take it any more, particularly the wank over Trance (my favourite character, in both her incarnations). I mean, were you THERE for the Slipstream debacle and subsequent collapse? It was INSANE. I haven't actually BEEN in a wankier fandom than Andromeda since then, and I've been in a LOT of fandoms in the mean time. Perhaps because I'm pickier about which communities I join... but still. While I loved the show, the fandom does NOT inspire too many great memories for me. Sorry. :(

Re: 166

[identity profile] firebrand164.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You! You wrote String and Chewing Gum! And then stopped in the middle of the story, on a bloody cliffhanger! I never really quite got over that. I've never been particularly critical of fanfic (certainly I never noticed anything wrong with that particular story, and still don't), and that one was fun to read, which is the whole point, so...

That story helped me get over the fact that my OTPs would not be the same as other people's, but that needn't stop me from enjoying their stuff (I shipped Dylan/Rommie and Trance/Harper). So thank you for that :-)

I was never really in the fandom - I didn't really know what fandom was at the time, I just liked the show and had one friend I talked about it with. I guess I got lucky in avoiding all that.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
118. Why would anyone hate Watterson? And what is it you disagree with him about?
I hate what Garfield stands for. It's still funny half the time and all, and watching the cartoon was a part of my childhood, but I hate the fact that Davison doesn't even write or draw the thing anymore, that he just basically delibrately created something that could be a merchandising industry for him to rake in on. I like the strip on it's own, but when I remember everything that goes on behind the scenes, I get a bad taste in my mouth.

While it would be nice to have a little Calvin&Hobbes merchandise, I do kind of like the "purity" of it being comics, just comics, just art and thoughts that Watterson did until he didn't want to anymore.
Also, they older I get, the more I appreciate his amazing artistic talent.

155. I can understand not feeling ashamed, but not understanding why other people hate it? Really. It doesn't seem that outlandish to me that a lot of folks might find steamy, gratuitious stories detailing a (usually) homosexual sex-life of (usually) heterosexual real people a wee bit creepy.
Even if it's not about teh sexy sex, the whole concept of writing about the wacky adventures of people that you do not know, but who are real and have lives and feelings and loved ones, kind of weirds me out. But once you add the sex, it becomes...voyueristic, I guess. Almost invasive. I know you're not technically invading their personal lives, that it's all made up, but I'd think a lot of famous people would be a little disturbed to find stories about them screwing their best friend or fellow cast/band member.

Just saying. Like what you like, but I can't understand that you can't understand that a lot of people will be squicked.

155

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This says it way better than I could. That's exactly why I find it so creepy. It's like treating real people like a character.

If that's the one where Frank gets the tattoo from the crazy religious nutcase who makes him go through the Passion of Chris (or whatever it's called) and Gerard is a priest and by the end the gang has turned into Buffy's troop except all male, then yeah. Re: 143

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
This.

The argument that people should ask fanartists but don't have to ask actual paid artists/mangaka/animators/etc BECAUSE it's just a labor of love and they don't get paid for it seems completely backwards to me, too. If it's a labor of love for you, and someone else loves it enough to want to hold onto it, and is showing it to other people who would likely have never heard of you or seen your art otherwise... why is that a bad thing, suddenly? There's no theft there, whereas arguably (stupid-arguably, but still) someone who's making money off the art having their art spread around for free could be said to be "stolen" from much more easily.

I'm really OCD about getting facts of canon right, but I've found it helps with RP. When it's obvious you're really thinking about it, people (usually) appreciate it, particularly if you're able to explain why you chose to have a character do something a certain way. I think this is particularly true in smaller fandoms--I haven't dared to touch a bigger, crazy one like Evangelion or Death Note.
