Arbitrary Food Preferences

What are some totally arbitrary food preferences that you're objectively correct about?

Food texture matters. For example, carrots and celery are tasty in a salad or as a snack, but both are nasty when cooked. The texture doesn't work and they just taste different.

And I don't care what my fellow Texans say. I guess I'm not a true Texan, and I'm fine with that. Chili needs beans. Without beans, it is basically bolognese sauce and frankly not that delicious. The beans in my opinion are a large part of what makes chili tasty. But then again, I'm not a huge beef lover.

Iowan here, but why the fuck would you make chili without beans?? I've never heard of that before. Gross. I'm with you; beans are the essence of chili.

(And don't be putting noodles in there, either. That makes it goulash, not chili.)

I agree with all you've said and also afaik every restaurant in the UK would agree with you on chilli. I've also been to new mexico and had chilli with beans there so like
The concept of beanless chilli feels made of wrong.

I don't even LIKE beans and I would never ever consider making chili without beans. WTF.

Oh, I deff prefer chili without beans and no spaghetti but I'm somewhat conditioned because my parents ate spaghetti and chili every Sunday lunch since the 15th century so I never want to see it again. (no, my parents aren't from Cincinnati.)

Hard disagree on celery. I find it nasty when raw, but tasty when cooked into something.

I don't even know if I've had chili without beans, but honestly I think I'd like it, with the caveat that there had better be more veg in it to give it the substance it's lacking from the beans.

Cherry tomatoes should never be cooked whole or even halved, else they become tiny pockets of boiling water waiting to burn your mouth.

I absolutely hate it when chicken salad has grapes and/or nuts in it. At least warn me, restaurants who serve this fruity abomination!

I'm an absolute freak about sweet and not-sweet foods mixing. When people are like, "Oh, this hamburger has a French toast bun," or whatever, I say get that shit out of my face. Sweet is good. Savory is good. Combining the two is unpleasant, especially if there isn't any kind of temperature difference between the two.

Also, ketchup on eggs is terrible and ruins them.

Good quality meat should be prepared as simply as possible. Keep all your elaborate sauces and your army of condiments for the lesser meat.

Broccoli should NEVER be cooked. It's delicious raw.
Almost same for spinach but it gets a pass in curries.
Tabasco tastes like petrol. I am being literal and dont know if it's just me.

Not gonna say I'm objectively correct by any means, but...

Lettuce with any type of wheat product is gross. Like bread/tortillas, on sandwiches or tacos/burritos, just no. Salads are good but lettuce with bread is just not right.

Grass-fed butter for potatoes. Every time.

Okay, I do make an exception for small roasted potatoes, but that's it.

I also put butter on my sweet potato, along with salt and pepper. That's a good sweet/salty combo.

Burgers and sandwiches that are too thick (tall?) to hold and bite comfortably are dumb and ruin the whole concept/purpose of that kind of food.

Re: Arbitrary Food Preferences

I can't eat spicy-hot foods. I can't eat chili, I can't eat hot paprika (sweet paprika is fine), I can't even eat large amounts of black pepper. I don't care how subtle and unobtrusive you think it is, the moment I see 'chili oil' or anything like that in the menu, I'm *not* *going* *to* *eat* *that*.
Leave me alone with my butter chicken goddamnit.

If I wanted mayo I would have ordered it.
Steak and roast beef should always be rare, otherwise it's like trying to eat leather.
Coke zero is NOT diet coke.
If you love mint and chocolate together you're welcome to it, to me it's like trying to eat dessert and brush your teeth at the same time.
I love scrambled eggs, deviled eggs and omelets but I don't even like looking at fried, poached or soft boiled eggs. Hard Boiled are fine.
I like lettuce in salads but not sandwiches.
In and Out in the only fast food burger I really like.

Not saying I'm objectively correct, but...

-Cilantro is delicious.
-Shawarma is so much more delicious than donair meat.
-Yam fries are so much better than regular fries.
-The taste of fat in more than tiny amounts is absolutely disgusting.
-I love ramen, but chashu is the worst (see the above point about fat). If I can’t get some other kind of meat in my ramen, I’m out.

Raw fish (on sushi, or sashimi style) is so much more delicious than cooked fish. I have nothing against cooked fish, and I do love fish and chips. But I'll take raw fish over cooked fish almost any day.

Canned salmon with the bones still in it is so vile as to be inedible.

French fries are to be dipped in mayo. Nothing else. Because they're actually Belgian!

there's absolutely no reason to put carrots and peas in fried rice. it does nothing to the flavor. i hate white onion, but i understand why people like them in there and i love the other types of onion and onion family. eggs are fucking wonderful. but what the absolute hell would you put peas in there? or carrots?
