I don't generally read fanfiction so I don't know how well-written most drabbles are, but seriously, I completely disagree. (Although I don't know the last time I read a good haiku, I might have to agree with you when it comes to that form.)
--Who says a drabble needs the plot of a 20 chapter fanfic epic? Can't it just be about one simple moment?
--Short =/= lack of explanation.
--I'd be much more impressed with an impeccable 100 word work than a 10,000 word chapter that is in desperate need of editing, spell check, revision, etc. Quality versus quantity, that demon hangs over always and forever.
--Prose can be any length, who says it has to be insanely long?
--A novel can completely lack plot. A drabble could be full of it. A sentence could have some intense intertwined plot of its own. Again, short =/= lack of plot.

Shorter forms can be incredibly challenging, to fit all the details of some moment/interaction into a small space. You can totally give a fabulous character sketch in a small space. Would you have to reduce it from what it might be? Probably. But you get the most important, definitive stuff then. And who says a drabble can't have style? This fucking comment has a writing style to its own, whether it's my word choice or the way I organize my words in their sentences.

Further:

Lack of plot != bad, especially in a short writing form.

111. HE WAS THEEERE FOR HER.
Just to clear things up, so I don't sound like an idiot later on, the whole point was that the guy WASN'T there for her, because he was manipulating her emotions? Right?

'Cause if not... Me = Idiot. ><

165. I know Christian Bale up there, but who's the other guy?

104. And yet in making this secret you have become one of us. One of us. One of us.

111. I AGREE SO HARD I LOVE YOU FOR SAYING THIS! Jesus, the forum thread! So full of baww, I am totally that guy why do they never like me bawww. I had to express my rage loudly on a different forum, so angry was I.

BEING THAT GUY IS A BAD THING. THAT'S THE POINT!

149. Drabbles can be beautiful, stating far more than the actual words say, with layers of meaning that makes them wonderful. Like haiku.

HOWEVER, a lot of the time they aren't, and your description applies. So I guess what I mean is, I see where you're coming from, but don't discount the one in a million that does it right.

101. Aww. :)

108. Aww. :( I've been in many fandoms for at least two years now, and I'd have to say that F!S does NOT give a good representation of fandom as a whole. Fandom people can definitely be as mean and petty as people in Real Life or worse (as they are in fact real people), but they can also be even better. You don't have to worry about people telling you you're too obsessed with fictional characters (unless you're stalking actors or something), or reading too much into a TV show. You can admit how weird you actually are, and have people go, "OMG ME TOO!"

I feel bad reading this, because that's how I felt last year, but trust me, there are really great people out there and you'll find them. As cliche as it is, just don't be afraid to be yourself because this is the internet, for chrissakes, you're bound to find someone who'll appreciate the real you. Comment on stuff and start conversations. It'll happen, promise. :)

111. Oh my god, this comic is awesome. Wow.

132. I love how liberal fandom is, having grown up in Republican City, Republican State, US, but I'd love to hear some other opinions now and then. If you have a different take on something, research! Don't be douchey about it, but it would be cool if there was more mature discussion around here.

143. AHAHAHAHAHA I'm trying to imagine this now.

149. This secret sounds incredibly condescending. Personally, I hardly ever read long plotty fics because I just want to read a small snippet of what-could-be, and a lot of times the long plotty ones don't give an in-depth enough look at the characters, which is all I really care about. There are different facets of this thing - you don't "win" at writing just because you focus on plot. Simmer.

170. OH MY GOD YOU'RE NOT ALONE. THAT MOVIE SCARRED ME FOR LIFE!!!!! It was freaking depressing! That and the Brave Little Toaster.

130. I adore Angelina Jolie too and I don't care about the haters. Her and Brad Pitt are hot together. Jennifer should just keep moving forward.

165. ...Not sure about the bromance thing, but the thought of them in a movie together...That would be epic. Someone in Hollywood make that shit happen!

117. True fact: Rook and Rand were one of my first 'ships. :) Too bad that when I watched the series again in my 20s, I wanted to punch Rand for being such a jerkass.

120. There seem to be a few words missing...? You think Stanley could have saved Blanche, yes? I disagree, and I think that was the point Tennessee Williams was making -- that Blanche, and those sensitive souls like her (like Williams) were doomed to be destroyed by the brutal, animal world.

129. It makes a little piece of me die to think that No Country for Old Men has a fandom.

168. Word. :) The sweetest thing was at the end of the Simpsons movie: "That's the best kiss of my life." "Best kiss of your life...so far." AW.

Houquet and Ray? It took me a second (I never watched Robotech, just the three separate shows.) I liked them as a couple, also I thought Stig/Scott was a bigger ass than Rand/Ray, personally. (And it boggles my mind that they didn't just keep his name as "Ray".)

101. I think that's the sweetest secret of the whole post. Warm fuzzies when other people get warm fuzzies are a wonderful thing, aren't they?

102. ... Who is Sir Gawain, in this context?

107. If your novel had a happy ending, he probably would approve. Damn your unhappy endings Wu Xia epics ;_;

111. Funny story there: my instinctive reaction to this was that the dude's problem was that he was not respecting her "definition of love", which I read as a blazing, sudden, love-at-first-sight kind of love... and how he, by approaching her with his slow, start-as-friends-then-become-lovers, wasn't really respecting her ideals but was instead imposing HIS ideals on her, even if that kind of love was something she did not want. That he was actually MANIPULATING her into loving him didn't even cross my mind until someone pointed it out to me... Can I please blame my Assburgers for this fail? I ACTUALLY HAVE A DOCTOR'S TESTIMONY AND EVERYTHING.

118. Tried a less plot-heavy, more "for-fun" RP?

130. Who is that lady and how is Aniston being a whiner related to her?

137. Wow. My sister is not alone in slashing hip-hop stars then. Which really, she shouldn't be. I mean... all that machismo they're throwing around makes me wonder why people haven't done so SOONER.

148. I can respect that too. It's pretty much their deal to go around and make big, idiotic fools out of themselves for laughs most of the time, and not everyone can be expected to lvoe on that. I sure do, but I get that others don't.

174. AGREED. Why is there not more fans for this? Why isn't Disney making more of it? Or given their success with sequels maybe that's a blessing... in any case, there needs to be more love for Sky High. Disney's finest 21st century live-action movie.

111. Good grief yes. 8C

149. In my experience it's not so much about plot ideas people are too lazy to elaborate on as about a moment or an idea that doesn't have to be part of anything bigger because the audience already know the characters/setting/story well enough to be able to put it into context themselves. A good short fic doesn't need to be elaborated on.

140. OP I LOVE YOU... YOU AND YOUNG STALIN BOTH<3

147. Well that lipstick certainly isn't her color, but I don't see why she'd be grotesque and not just on the unconventionally pretty side...

149. Aside from like 39048209482 other people submitting this exact secret, I disagree on the basis that it's sometimes harder and more clever to tell a story in such a short way. I mean yeah, there are terrible ones, but if an author can capture just a snapshot moment in a characters life that can subtly be crafted to still embody the whole of the character and his/her world, then I think that's pretty cool and takes some effort/talent.

156. That looks fun! What is it and where can I find it to distract myself from this semester's finals?

164. Ah, my secret and shameful love of the Jonas Brothers finds me once again.

165. Bromance! I love that word. And man is Christian Bale hott. (I don't know who the other guy is...)

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
104. So, basically you're saying that you want to help people with their serious conflicts, and imagining characters in a relationship is not a conflict? Or that it's hard to take secrets seriously when so many people take fiction seriously? That's the most I could decipher, I'm still a bit confused.

108. You're new? Well, at least you have a clean slate :)

127. I don't even know who they are, but loop videos like that are hypnotic.

133. You know, I've actually wondered how a spin-off community would be, since I have several "statements" about fandom that aren't exactly secrets. The kind of stuff that I would post, but it's more like "I tell everyone!"

147. She looks like she could actually look somewhat good if she washed off some of that makeup :/

156. I love puzzle games. They ALWAYS allow me to clear my mind of any of the stupid things I need a break from.

163. ......Well, I'll probably have unseen it by tomorrow.

169. I still miss the old Neopets. :(

n!s 4. Is it just me, or have there been a LOT of anti-politicalslash secrets lately?

I've come across plenty of people in fandom who aren't native English speakers and no one has ever had a problem with them joining in. And besides, your English sounds fine, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Hope you find the perfect RP for you!

[identity profile] aerikas.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
111 - What's even more boggling is the number of people who, after having the point explained to them in exacting detail, *still* don't get it. Grr.

122 - I'm one of the few weirdos who actually liked the ending. I can certainly understand wanting Van & Hitomi to be together but I don't think the traditional happy ending would have really fit the series. Plus, I think it says something about the growth that they both went through that they can be apart yet still remain connected and be happy with that.

156. I LOVE THAT GAME.

169. Back when the original creators were around, the plots were interesting and there was a really great sense of snarky humor. Since it was sold to Viacom, it's turned into the more soulless version it's become today. it's sad, really. I tried to go back, but it's just not the same now.
