Whatcha doing today, FS?

Normal stuff - listening to music and trying to dig into work and trying to keep cool. Planning a shopping list + things to cook for the next week or so, because I need to shop tomorrow.

Also, trying not to worry about the wildfires suddenly showing up and hoping that the ash and smoke doesn't get that bad, and just generally hating this disaster of a fucking year.

California is on fire and going through a heat wave. The air quality is shit so we can't open the windows, and everything we used to do when it got too hot and smoky outside is closed now because of Covid. It really fucking sucks. But, I got super bored this morning and got out my old watercolor set, and I've been alternating between "Wow I suck at this" and "Wow what an interesting effect".

I’m exploring some computer art apps on my iPad mini. I have the same opinion about the results that I’ve been getting.

Gobbling up the third book in a trilogy. Shower can wait, dishes can wait, laundry can wait; I'm overwhelmed by the news and I need to escape for a while.

Took the cat to the vet this morning, again. third time since last Friday. We've finally figured out the issue, though, and should have her heading for being better.

Still have a migraine, so not getting as much work done as I planned. Ended up having to take a tramadol, so now I'm just listening to softish music and reading Reddit stuff. May end up taking a nap in a few minutes.

I think we're on our own for dinner. Both parents have gotten sickish from the flu shot, so none of us are feeling particularly well.

I messaged my neurologist yesterday, and I still haven't gotten a reply, so I'm a bit irritated about that.

Buying more books. Which wasn't planned. It just happened. I have enough to read and now I feel bad. I wonder if I could manage to go on a book buying ban till at least October.
I'm a fast reader and I genuinly am looking forward to reading them, so it's not like they'll lie around here for years, but I really really did not want to spend more money on books this month. (For the record: My bank account will be totally fine, but it's the second month in a row where I spent more money than I wanted to and I'm angry at myself.)

WORK... is what I would like to say I was doing but that's a lie. Instead I'm playing games and browsing the internet.

I WILL get work done tonight since I have trouble sleeping anyway and have trouble focusing during the day. But right now is not the time.

*screams in logistics* Spent all day working on shipments coming in and out of the US. So many tariff codes. -_- And people blaming me for their orders being late.

It is annoying because my company laid off a bunch of people and now they are just trying to shuffle those jobs onto other people. So now I am doing two full time roles with 10 less hours because we are still on part time. I hate it.

Attended a really long Zoom meeting. It was mainly an overview of everything we went through during our last meeting, but with fifteen minutes devoted to telling us to please wear pants during Zoom meetings and no, the bed is not an appropriate place to sit in during Zoom meetings.

I've done nothing useful at all, as I have vacation and no plans what so ever. Also, "Attack of the dead men" is stuck in my head now. Both the song and the imagery of Russian pseudo-zombie soldiers chasing off Germans.

Went grocery shopping earlier, and have just been watching TV and YouTube videos and looking at stuff on Reddit since I got home a few hours ago. I just had a snack and now I'm going to go watch convention stuff. I need to clean the kitchen but will probably do it in a few hours when I make dinner since I'm not hungry anymore now.

Utopian and dystopian fiction - which do you prefer? Favorite examples of either? Things you particularly like or hate to see in utopian and dystopian settings?

I like both, but when it comes to dystopian stuff I still need to have genuinely heroic characters doing heroic things and I need an actually happy or semi-happy ending where things are at least starting to get better.

Star Trek would be a favorite Utopian. How to Train Your Dragon is kind of utopian. At least, they create a utopia.

Black Panther is kind of utopian and also shows how a utopian society needs to interact with other cultures and share what it has and not just be in isolation.

The Silmarillion would actually be in my mind dystopian fiction. Things are pretty genuinely dystopian for most of it, but there is always hope and there are always good people willing to do the right thing even when it costs.

I love the Giver book. One of my favorite dystopias. Funnily enough this one is also utopian in that the society in question claims to be a utopia.

Edge of Tomorrow is a great dystopian movie. The aliens have almost conquered the Earth and seem unstoppable.

Dystopias disguised at utopias. Favorites: The Uglies, The Giver, Other World in Coraline, Hot Fuzz, Animal Farm, Bioshock/Bioshock Infinite (you have to read the book to get it for the first Bioshock game).

I'm just here to correct a mistake that's already been made and will probably be made more.

All dystopias are disguised as utopias to the characters who live in them and sometimes the reader as well. If a terrible society doesn't sell an image of being a great place, if everyone who lives there knows it sucks, it's not a dystopia. It's just a terrible society. I think TV Tropes calls it a Crapsack World. In any case, not a dystopia.

Dystopian. But I only like it if the main character is an antihero type (e.g. 1984). If they're a poor, beleaguered hero (e.g. Hunger Games), hard pass. And no happy endings. I'm not reading/watching dystopia for happy endings. I want to be disturbed at the beginning and totally disillusioned and disgusted by the end.

Re: Inspired by #3

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Dystopian because I honestly can't fathom society ever achieving utopia, not without force; it's against human nature altogether and if we have to be forced into a state of utopia, that in itself is dystopian.

Ones that are kind of hard to tease out I guess. Because my favorite example of both utopia and dystopia is City. On the one hand, we have a canine utopia. But on the other hand, humanity has come to a lovely, empathetic end. This probably sounds super weird, but it's a weird book, and I really love it. Haven't found anything else quite like it.

Re: Inspired by #3

(Anonymous) 2020-08-20 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some examples of stories set in a utopia where it's not actually a false utopia, or the characters have to leave the utopia for a story to happen, or there's a threat from outside?

Unless we're defining "utopia" like Star Trek where no one is poor but shit still happens, then what stories can be told in a utopia? Where's the conflict?

As much as I love Mad Max and think some pretty great stories can be told about dystopias, I think I ultimately prefer something on the level of Star Trek where we can all be very optimistic about the future but still have adventures.
