106 - Who is that, and what show/movie is that picture from? I haven't the slightest clue who that is, I have never seen a picture of that man in my life, but the sad look on his face breaks my heart. :(

I'm all curious now...

It's Toby Flenderson from The Office, US version. I highly recommend watching it, it's a very funny show and Toby is pretty cool. Even though he's sad a lot of the time, he does win occasionally and has some hilarious line.

129. Okay, I did say on earlier pages that I found Chase an unbelievable top, and that the scene with Harvey was more funny to me than anything else. That aside...

My secondary reaction to that scene was to be vaguely bummed out because Jesse Spencer is more physically imposing than I am. Besides being short, I'm just sort of...cute (at best). And I thought, "If he can't pull it off, if I try it, I'm bound to get someone laughing in my face. I'll look like a kid who got into my parent's box of bondage gear under the bed." So actually, it's nice on one level to know that not everybody (as the comments give evidence) thinks that pretty-boy Chase was unsexy fail as a top. LOL, slightly more hope I wouldn't be a laughingstock outside of my own head.

(Sidenote: I still think Chase is a sub like whoa, but I also think that's just how Jesse Spencer plays him. Spencer himself could be an entirely different story.)

Execution is everything. You can write the most saccharine ending but if you write like you're possessed by Shakespeare's talent no one will be bothered by it.

But even if you aren't, you can get away with your characters getting engaged. Just show in some way that everything comes at a price and leave in a little bit of ambiguity and doubt about the "happy" part of the ending. Life isn't neat and it does not come with happy endings, it just has very happy moments sometimes. If you show that your happy ending is a happy moment and not a perpetual happily ever after, you should be fine in the realism department.

This is perhaps the difference between a good happy ending and a bad one - the implication that life will always be this happy. I think Rowling and Meyer both failed in this regard by implying that it does, which does not compute with the way we know the world works.

You can have a happy ending.

Dante/Virgil! With a Dore illustration! You, OP, are my new favorite person. :D I took a class last semester entirely on Dante/his works, and wrote a paper on the way Dante and Virgil's relationship changes throughout the Inferno and Purgatorio. (I got an 'A'! heee)
