110. If you think Europeans were the only ones doing the whole "Let's conquer occupied lands!", "We need to make the race pure" and "Our monarchy is the greatest monarchy therefore you must follow it!" then you don't know your Chinese history at all.

Though I have to agree with you when you say "'diverse' does not mean "nobody is white".

A group of all Chinese isn't more diverse than a group of nothing but Germans.

124. Sigh. Dave Gahan. I've had a crush on him since 6th Grade and it has yet to wane.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-08 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
110. Yeah, that's the kind of thinking that also says, "why do we need white people?" A lot of people think white people invented slavery. Seriously.

110 - Teal Deer alert.

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
110. Actually, I have met some rather pale Asians who only had their eyes to give them away as Asian. Just saying.

Anyways, I kind of see where you're coming from, but I still cannot condone a white Fire Nation either as the same thing as seen in the rest of the Avatarverse. The way they dress, write, fight and their mannerisms, food, hairstyles, etc are all based in Japanese and Chinese cultures. It's called context clues.

And the whole steel thing can be understood by looking at the main fantasy aspect, their bending ability. Somewhere along the line, some bender probably discovered that heating certain rocks certain ways would create steel. While our Asia mostly used steel for swords and armor, who's to say that years without European influence could've led to ships, tanks, and the like? Anyone with the ability to make steel could've come up with the technique to make the same things the Fire Nation did.

Besides, how do you think we lowly mortals on boring ol' Earth discovered steel? Any other nation could've discovered steel, but the Fire Nation did first, probably due to their element and their aggressive nature.

Re: 110 - Teal Deer alert.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-07 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
But when you consider that the ENTIRE AVATAR WORLD has culutre based on the real Asian world, even though the invidual nations are *clearly* different races of people, a great number of those 'context clues' become moot. When you take out the things that are rooted in a history that all the nations clearly share - like thier speech, their hair styles, martial arts, honor codes, dress styles and food - and look only at the things that make them different from each other, you can see that it's not all totally rooted in Asian culture.

I mean, look at the Water Tribes - they share the same basic martial arts roots, language and archetucture as the other nations, but there's no disputing that they're clearly meant to be an Innuit culture. Is it really so hard to believe that the Fire Nation could be a white culuture that absorbed and adapted to Asian influence, rather than the other way around?

Also, I disgree - the main 'fantasy aspect' is not their bending ability, but rather the idea that this is a world where Asian culture and philosophy became dominant rather than the European, as it did in our world. That's the 'What If' break-off from our world - the Bending is an expression of that. And it's just plain fun.

No! Do not feel bad. I cannot stress enough that it is totally acceptable and within reason to mock scientology. It is not a religion.

103 - Oh Lordie, no! Big Cock Little Cock is shockingly awful, and that's coming from somebody who has to watch 'Me Too' every morning at the moment. I liked 'Small' on 'Fuck off, I'm Ginger'... basically anything that keeps them away from the preschool schedules has to be a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

152 - Are you Max Mosley? The only Nazi I like is that woman in Indiana Jones who shouts 'ALAAAAAAARRRRMMM!' because she's hilarious.

164 makes me smile. Patrick Stewart's character wanted Frasier so bad, and was such a gentleman about the whole thing. Bless! Also - because of the Brent Spiner episode, I now sort of ship Noonien Soong/Lilith. I think they'd have had fun together.

Groan, don't tell me the damn Twilight secrets are making a comeback...

103: FFFF OH MY GOODNESS I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS THEM XD I really hated BCLC when I was younger though ^^;

129: W-wait, who is he? -scratches head- I've seen him from somewhere but I can't remember where and it's driving me crazy.

132: Lalalala Ryan is gay and I am in complete denial anything could possibly contradict that LALALALA /sob. Oh HSM3 D:.

133: Oh, lol forever XD I actually spotted Melman and Gloria coming since the first movie (and was all giddy because they became canon wtf) But that thought passed through my head too.

143: Even though I think a lot of the art is absolutely gorgeous, I have to admit that the fact they're meant SP characters does make me pull faces at the screen sometimes. I mean, the horrors of Skinny Cartman
and where the hell is Kyle's spectacular Jewfro D: So even though the girlybubblehead part of me squees at the cuteness, it does squick me a little ^^; (But I do like the fact they look older than freakin' nine D:)

145: Aww, I love this secret, OP. Even though I think Girl's Aloud are complete poo, she is definitely the best singer ^^ And I think she's so pretty as well, what the hell is up with press standards -grumble- AndIhateCheryl

156: OP, I'm so sorry -hugs-

THIS. For me, Kyle's Jewfro is the best thing to draw. I once drew a comic parodying all the other weird-ass hairstyles he gets in fanart. I don't understand why people shy away from its awesomeness. :[

Shogun is probably one of the most awesome books I've ever read.

Gai-Jin is a good read too.

165. Hahaha! Scientology is a pyramid scheme and/or cult, so... Yeah. I don't lose respect for people for being Scientologists. I feel sorry for them.

138: I know what you mean. One of my friends wants to cosplay, but she never makes an effort and I have no time to sew for her, so I always end up cosplaying by myself. I want cosplaying friends too. XD;

[identity profile] andromeda-2.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
109:From which game?

121:Lol, I watched that flash a couple of days ago, one of the funniest Twilight parodies I've seen so far XD

129:Wasn't that kid in the Love Actually movie? The little kid that had a crush on that girl, and joined the band as a drummer to try and get closer to her(Yes, this is extremely good describing, but I don't feel like typing up a whole page)? Holy crap, he's already 18??

136:Does F-Zero even have a big enough fandom for it to be fanfic at all? personally, I ship Samus/Falcon(thank you, Smash Bros! :D)

141:I'm not gonna say anything. Just quietly face palm *facepalm

154:Why do I feel like this secret has been posted here before, many months ago? And my question is still the same as it was back then - Which characters do you ship?

110 - Fire Nation is obviously Japan. I thought EVERYBODY knew that.

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, it's more of a mix of Japan and China when you look at it. Yes, the Imperialism thing is definitely Japan, but there are many Chinese influences as well, particularly in damn near everything else such as dress, architecture, food, etc. Bit of a mix of both. Kind of like how the Earth Kingdom is a giant mishmash of all major Asian cultures.

Wow. Are you me lol? I kind of feel the same way and sometimes I'll think, "Why am I thinking about this pairing? IT'S NOT CANON but it's so fun to write =(". Reminds me that I should work on the actual manuscript. But I'll write fic for you anon =). You should find other people to talk about this with.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
110 Hmm, nearly everything you say, especially an aggressive nation in a rush for power, could certainly be applied to JAPAN from the mid-19th to mid-20th century. Also, since Avatar isn't a Japanese manga, I doubt that they meant to evoke Perry with the ships (never mind that his ships didn't look like that). It isn't Hollywood that's brainwashed you; it's just a signifier that you live in a western culture. It's all over the culture. I mean, cultural relativism only came into vogue in the 1930s, and it takes a lot longer than 80 years to reverse centuries of race and religion based hierarchies.

112 Honestly, if your friend is a big shipper, you should tell her how the story ends. It's not wrong at all to write a story like that, but since she's a shipper you might want to warn her so she doesn't get all excited about it and then later feel disappointed. I've had friends say to me (not about shipping, but other preferences) "hey, you can read that story I wrote, but it's really not your thing and you probably don't want to."

125 Okay, wait. So you think it's okay to ship fictional characters in manga, comics, anime or animated series, but not in a non-illustrated book or a live-action television show or movie?

135 There's a scene in The Fourth Protocol where Brosnan's character, this KGB guy, picks up a guy in a men's room. He only does it so he can kill him, iirc, but the picking up part is super hot.

148 Because some bad writing teachers seem to think that you shouldn't use names too much, so some writers are trying not to use names, and if they're writing slash they can't just say "he" so they use Homeric epithets which I fucking CANNOT STAND. In a fandom I was in people kept saying "the older man" and "the younger man" even though the men in question were three years apart. I mean, come on! Names are awesome.

153 You might want to just come into fandom. It really is easy to avoid the wank if you're not a wanky person. And after all, most of us in fandom are here so we can talk to other people about fannish things!

156 They deserved a better death than for Harry to look around and just see them piled in the corner. LAME. But I agree with you; I thought Lupin should live, but it wasn't just to have an orphan, but also that all the Marauders had to die so they could, in death, lead Harry to his fate. ALSO LAME.

160 You know, I bet if you got really brave about it, and started talking out against the elitists, you might catch the eye of other people who feel the same way as you do, and then you'd have someone to talk to. You can do it without being an asshole yourself, but just saying, "gee, I feel this other way" and see what happens.

165 Sorry, I agree with your friend, and no, I don't get all my information about Scientology from South Park.
