128. Huh... was totally expecting a big wank to break out over this and 152. You just never can tell whats gonna stir up the flames here.

146. HAHAHAHA win.

156. Oh God. This. *hugs* I fucking HATE when death is used as a cheap dramatic device to make it more tragic. And then there's the excuse "well war really is like that!" Sure, and thats why all the little kids (except Colin Creevy) just miraculously survived, while Remus and Tonks were relegated to canon fodder. What really made me furious was that she wanted to leave an orphan but then was like "Oh but don't worry he grew up totally happy and healthy and has a hot french girlfriend lol" So the message is "war is hell" AND "happily ever after, no worries!!!" Sirius and Dumbledore's deaths were handled with grace and genuine poignancy, and while they make me cry, they don't infuriate me like how Remus and Tonks' demise.

110. When i started watching Avatar I thought the Fire Nation looked like a generalized Chinese ethnicity, particularly the more minor characters. But I can see how you can attribute them as the white nation. But a whole white nation against an Asian nation, Native American/Inuit tribal nations, and peaceful (obviously Tibetan-ish) Air nomads? Hollywood forbid! *rolls eyes at Hollywood*

126. I just remember I was SO FUCKING TERRIFIED of that mini-duck head peeking out of his inner tube that mimicked his every expression. I thought it was some Garfield-ized chest-bursting alien or something and I had no idea why it was there. IT FREAKED ME OUT.

156. FUCK YOUR ORPHAN FETISH, JKR, AND WRITE BETTER. I would have accepted their deaths if they weren't just, like, footnotes in the "oh, yeah, they're dead, moving on, look there's Neville!" way she did it. And although it doesn't really give any insight to his childhood, the epilogue doesn't really show that Teddy'd been very affected by his orphaning, anyway. DH Fail #35,361.

165. I fucking LOVED the Mastersons and I lost respect for them after I found out. And I'm still trying to believe that the real Jason Dohring lives in an alternate universe where he's not one, and he's still single.

Same here! It's quieted down a bit over the past year, but I've always felt like I could never say anything about..... anything, without getting mauled by either the ~smart~ elitists, the dumbfuck elitists, or the homophobic elitists for one reason or another. It was my first major fandom, so I was convinced all fandoms were like that, until jumping ship, expanding my interests and meeting new people from other fandoms. The people I've met are completely awesome, and half of them are at least somewhat into my original fandom as well, so it's a win-win. Yes.

tl;dr = jump ship for the win?

106: I've read Watchmen almost 20 times in the past mumble years. And, yeah, there are a lot of jerkfaced old skool fans. There are layers of douchery, in fact, like any fandom. But there are loads of people who're happy to bring new folks into the fandom, too. And lots of silly smart-as-hell fans.

That said, I'd really recommend reading the novel before watching the movie. If you message me, I'd even buy the novel for you. That's how much I want new people to read it. Plus, then you can totally gush with the current awesome internet fandom - don't even have to wait for the movie to come out. Also: fuck the elitists.

142: I really, really want to read that now. Not for the hawt sex0rs, either. I'd love you forever if you sent me a link.

152: Not as uncommon as you'd think. Don't sweat it.

I'm not the OP, but dude, seriously? That's super nice of you to offer that to a stranger on the internet. o.o

I saw a promo pic a while back and was like 'shit, I want to read that.' I decided to wait, though, because I knew as soon as I did I'd want to see the movie and I hate waiting with bated breath for a movie to come out. I broke and requested one but they're all taken for like the next couple of months. *single precious tear*

And that is my Watchmen-related sob story, lol.

[identity profile] ex-nightray.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
106. I feel you. I've read the Watchmen and I still plan on going to see the movie, elitism or not.
111. Something tells me they wouldn't read these books because they're not written by a JAPANESE!!11 author anyway.
143. I actually find it hilarious because, well, it's freakin South Park.

143

[identity profile] lunarkitten.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I love seeing different interpretations of South Park. While I wish it wasn't an overabundance of anime-style art, it's still cool to see the characters in different styles. I can't bring myself to look at the hardcore slash most of the time though. Nothing against it, it's just not South Park to me.

wtf. They are so Asian, how did you not get this. I mean, obvious culture aside, THEY ACTUALLY LOOK ASIAN. I mean, Mai? Zuko? How do you look at them and not think ASIAAAAAAAAAN.

That said, nothing will convince me that Aang isn't white. He looks so. So. White, man. Like an awkward little white boy. B| Not that Aang is from the Fire Nation, but. I felt the need to throw that out there.

Re: 110

[identity profile] sashwizzled.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not going to lie, Aang sure as hell looks white to me. I watched some episodes of Avatar a while back without knowing a single thing about the series and I'd have sworn up and down that Aang was this cute awkward little white kid and I still do.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-08 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
106. It's a single graphic novel, it's really not that hard to read, and it's worth it. that being said I mean... I feel like, AFTER you read the comic (whether you watched the movie or not), you'll probably understand why everyone is bitching. If you still don't agree, you'll have something to defend yourself with.

I mean, just read it!! It's good...

142. I think it really depends on the way you handled (wrote) it ...but the world does take all kinds, & especially in fandom D: If some one's reading it for the sex bit. Well.

153. Lol!! Actually I'm really tempted to do this but uh.. well, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-08 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
142. See, I definitely understand when hot sex is still hot in a bad situation. I also get the appeal of masochism.

But the sex I wrote was pretty sad and painful. There was no pleasure on the side of the narrator. However, like you said I could have just handled it wrong.

110, 148

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
110. Wow. I feel really sorry for you that the comments to your secret basically proved why you had to post it as a secret in the first place.

I think that you make a perfectly valid point with your secret. Yes, the same sorts of things can be attributed to Japan. Yes, the Avatar-verse is very heavily influenced by Asian cultures. Yes, diversity is awesome and having an all-white cast for the live action movie feels like they're kind of missing the point.

But. That doesn't mean that you can't have more than one interpretation of the same thing. It would be pretty damn boring if you couldn't. It does not make you stupid or racist to think that the Fire Nation could be based on a reversal in which a European-like society became influenced by an Asian-like society (which, by the way, can we PLEASE stop saying that the Avatar-verse nations are supposed to be such-and-such real-world nations? Because they're not. Because they're the Earth Kingdom, the Air Nomads, the Water Tribes, and the Fire Nation. They're not China/Korea/Japan/whatever. Influenced by =/= are exactly the same.)

In all honesty I've been avoiding the Avatar fandom like the plague ever since this news came out, because I really don't care as much as I'm apparently "supposed to". If Mike and Bryan are pissed about it, then by all means, wank away, but since as far as I know they've not said anything to denounce Shyamalan for it... they're the creators, they know it better than any of us do whether we like to admit it or not. If they're okay with the casting, then so am I.

148. Out of all the annoying crap that shows up in fanfiction, I have to say that the blond(e)/brunett(e) thing is pretty far down on my list.

Re: 110, 148

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Look, you can have more than one interpretation, but that doesn't mean that all the interpretations are going to be correct. The Avatar-verse nations ARE parallels of real world nations. They aren't exactly real world ones, but holding your hands over your ears and humming doesn't change that that's the influence, that's what they're meant to be.

107 - I'm in love with BBC's Merlin and am very sad I have to wait til next fall for more eps. D:

108 - Oh sweet lord I adore that movie. Although if you insert John Leguizamo into your secret, I could've posted that.

110 - I thought the fire nation was Chinese. FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. Other than my subconscious racist thoughts of how China is represented in media.

114 - IA with all of that except fuck RTD in the face for taking all of that away from her and denying her character the growth that occurred over the season. HATE.

127 - me too. But that's mostly because I find Gaspard extremely unattractive. =(

129 - He's 18? wot. I feel old.

144- IAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA The whole Zack thing really pissed me off at Bones. I boycotted season 4 so far pretty much because of it =(

156 - IA with this one as well. My friend always says "I'll never forgive her for Fred!" And I always retort "Tonks and Lupin for me." =(

Their deaths made me the angriest of all in DH. Sure, lots of people died over the course of the series. But when Remus and Tonks died it was just so OBVIOUSLY a throw away plot device. She didn't even give them the respect of a decent death scene as she did with other major characters. It was just all "Oh, BTW THEY'RE DEAD TOO". I have a whole other rant about how Tonks being at the battle was completely unrealistic and obviously shoehorned in just so she could die, but that's a story for another day. Fail JRK. Fail.

Though, really, the person I felt the most sorry for in that equation was Andromeda. JKR knocked off her husband, her daughter, and her son-in law, and left her to raise their orphan baby.

I lose all respect for people when I find out they're Scientologists. And for people who defend Scientologists. Doesn't change my opinion about Scientology.

106. Just buy the graphic novel and read it. Or don't and go see the film anyway. Screw what your brother says. Plenty of people went to see LOTRs and Harry Potter without ever picking up the books.

I'm only just in the middle of Watchmen for the first time ever, yet I've been into Batman for years. See, not even us comic geeks have read everything! And honestly? Most people in the comic book fandom are grateful for new blood. It means the fandom never dies!
