105. ...Right. How do you Mike isn't basing his look on Tibetan monks? You know, like they did for Aang? Way to pay attention to cultural inspirations!

106. "Novels" *lol* Oh, Watchmen fandom, you're silly. They're comics. And while most of the comics were pretty good, is still has one of the dumbest endings I've ever read. God, it disappointed me. And I don't see why you have to read one to be allowed to watch and enjoy the move (you know, it it ever comes out).

110. That is actually... a very interesting way to think of it. o_O Now, I must ponder.

141. Petty OP is petty. And full of fail.

I think the 'novels' bit comes from her brother being an idiot or her making up the secert whole cloth. I've never once heard anyone in the fandom call them 'novels' a graphic novel, yes. Comics, yes. But novels? Fail.

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
105 - Ahahahahahahahaha!

106 - So why not read the novels first? ???

108 - Agreed. I would have hit it while he was wearing that costume.

110 - Someone please post that Bingo card again.

122 - I only read mpreg for the lulz.

143 - Ooooh... sparkly...

148 - *shrug* It's good to use when you have two or more male(or even female) characters in several scenes together -- the hims and he's get all mixed up, and repeating their names all the time isn't right.

152 - You are so going to get roasted... it's one thing to think the uniforms are sexy, but the dominance? No.

156 - That was my biggest issue with the last book (even the EpiLOLge didn't bother me as much). Surely, one of them could have stayed back and watched over their newborn child while the other went off to fight? One of those deaths was totally unnecessary -- but I digress. *shrug*

[identity profile] greeneyedlady.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think it is much better to just use the characters' names in such situations. If done well, it is not repetitive and much smoother than the dreaded epithet.

127. Oh, the fandom is out there. And have you read the books, preferably Hannibal? You would like the book much better than the movie. The ending is ENTIRELY different, and I believe you would like it.

148. OH THANK GOD. I thought I was the only one who found that ANNOYING AS ALL HELL. I actually won't even finish a fic that does that because I find it too distracting and annoying to overlook.

150. I do this too, with my own writing. My best friend has a non-canon ship, and I dabble in it too because it amuses me, but I'll never write it canonically because it just isn't canon. XD I'm proud of myself for having a distinction between Me the Fan, and Me the Author. I wouldn't be embarrassed by it. I mean, I guess some people might find it elitist or something if they don't understand, but the emphasis here is that they don't understand.

Ironically enough, you're using the word "typo" incorrectly. Maybe you should use the time you're spending on being a judgmental ass to review basic grammar.

The definition of "typo." (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/TYPO) It's a noun, not a verb.
Edited 2009-01-07 22:22 (UTC)

not the OP but

(Anonymous) 2009-01-07 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
that's nit picking? plenty of people use "typo" to mean a verb and while the dictionary definition is noun and not a verb, it's basically come to be used that way as well. language evolves ... technically correct or incorrect notwithstanding.

141. You don't even know if she's going to have any effect over Axel/Roxas yet. But, whatever floats your boat. Also, how the hell is Roxas' hood staying up like that? O.o

165. I don't watch That 70's Show, but it killed me when I found out that dude's younger brother (Francis in Malcolm in the Middle) was on the list. But that, and several other names, didn't make me change my mind.

Also, South Park were pretty late to the party, all things considered.

[identity profile] ember-reignited.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
148. This. Just... THIS. And its even worse in anime-ish fandoms where writers make up names for hair colors that don't exist in the real world. I'm sorry, but if you refer to Joshua Kiryu as a "the silveret, I hit the back button.

Also, there's a lot of lonely people secrets today. D: It's making me sad.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS. I'm sorry, I do "the blonde" on occasion, when it's really starting to get repetative to just keep using the character's name again and again ad nauseum, but I want to strangle whoever came up with "the silveret." REAL WORDS PLEASE. REAL WORDS. It's a pretty word but it sounds like a bird or something 8|

At least we're not in DNAngel fandom. My sources (aka an earlier thread) tell me they had to put up with "bluette."

109. Dude. Is that the Hunter from Left4Dead?

148. In your opinion. I think that once or twice per chapter, especially if you don't want to keep repeating the person's name (and if you've got more than one character of the same gender, so "he" and "she" won't suffice), is just fine. Scatter them in with a bunch of other ones and you're fine.

But seriously, is [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets becoming the new home to rants that [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants is sick of...?

148

[identity profile] mahkia.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
A good writer can find ways to differentiate between characters without using ridiculous and/or fictional methods. Personally, I find it distracting because it just isn't good writing. I'm not trying to be elitist, but published authors (at least any I've ever read) simply don't do that.

Except that South Park got it right. South Park skewers all religions, from Catholics to Mormons to Protestants to Jews to Muslims, etc., and out of all the religious satire episodes, only the Scientology episode got the "This is what Scientologists actually believe!" treatment, because it's the only
"religion" where the truth is more funny than parody or satirical exaggeration.

105. I could go into the reasons why Aang is not a Gary Stu but that would take too much time, and I don't feel like it.

110. First off) how they look doesn't really matter next to the part where their culture is primarily Asian (mostly Chinese and Japanese), so really odds are they are not white. Also Asians do have a variety of skin tones not all of them have pure white skin. (Also how in the hell do Zuko, Mai, Iroh, Ozai, or Azula look white to anybody?)

Secondly, why do we need white people? There are plenty of films with just white people, it isn't like if one film out of how many doesn't have white people will mean that poor white people will be put out to the pasture, I think we are doing damn fine in representation, lets have a mainstreamed movie with something else for a change.

Besides a white person in a bunch of Asian garbs and culture is just going to plain look odd.

N!F1: Er... sorry...? What's funny is that if you venture away from fandom and into some of the more "RL" based communities, you find it all over the place.

106. I'm surprised you didn't deck him right there and then. I think there's a law on the books somewhere that you're allowed to assault elitist comic bastards if they say anything like that.

111. Hell yes, Shogun! The adventures of Anjin-san have helped me through many discussions on Japanese history and culture. And if they're too busy to read the book, they can just suffer the sixteen-hour television adaptation.

126. I bet they could do amazing things with that innertube.

132. There had to be a whole plot excised from this movie. How can you have that awesome duet between them and then not elaborate? Damnit, Kenny Ortega! Give us our pairing!

Icon love!

I have nothing useful to add I just want to love on Harriman/Alan Ruck.

I just saw the movie and I have to admit that it was pretty good as far as the technical aspects go, interesting camera work, great lighting, nice use of filters, not to mention the amazing locations, it was visually stunning. As for the artistic aspects, I rather keep my mouth shut on that one.

I'm hoping Xion will turn out to be this great, complex, and well-developed character, but I doubt it :/ Considering the treatment of female characters in KH (particularly Kairi, who has the depth of a rain puddle in Arizona), I doubt it.

112 DO IT.

118 Oh my dear God, I will read Lust/ANYONE at the drop of a hat. Lust/Winry? MREOOOW.

(Still puzzling out that 'I'm straight...right?' thing too)

121 Hours and HOURS. My roommate and I went to see it and I, along with the ENTIRE audience in the theater, were laughing our asses off, much to my friend's sulking because she's in love with the books x1000. And I really, really needed a good laugh.

130 Except for Spike with Drusilla. They were so fucking evil and gave me the creeps.

141 OMFG RIKU AND KING MICKEY *epic fangirly flails* HI MICKEY OMFG I CAN'T WAIT I CAN'T WAIT I CAN'T WAIIIITTT FOR YOU TWO!!!

...sorry, forgot to care about the stupid that is rabid, RABID "lyke omg my precious akuroku!! ^-^ DIAF EVIL VAGINA/SIMPLY EXISTING PERSON"

Srsly, if you're threatened by someone just existing, you don't seem to have a lot of faith in your ship at all, because if you did you wouldn't give a shit if people wrote for it or not.

143 Um, maybe it's disturbing BECAUSE it's innocent? South Park + innocent just makes horses scream in my head.

141 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-01-07 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
For I know, Xion's role in the game might not influence Axel and Roxas at all. But her introduction is already causing wank in the AkuRoku fandom, which was none too peaceful to begin with. Nothing on the ship itself. I'm kind of glad that Xion is a girl, since there are so few het fans in this fandom.

But thank you for speaking your mind. I find all the responses to my secret quite fascinating, it's so refreshing to have honesty.

Dude! That's the hunter from Left4Dead, yes?! OMG LOVE THAT GAME LIEK WOAH!!! I've been spending way too much quality time with my XBox and this epic awesomeness! Also, I would hit it... But not in the way you mean "hit it." I would literally bash his ass in because that MOFO is an pouncy little bitch and I still haven't managed to get the achievement where you shoot his flying squirrel ass mid-air. Also, they are not "zombies." They are called the "infected" because they have some sort of scary super rabies virus.
