Sorry OP, but if you think the rules of a particular community are ridiculous and you don't want to follow them, that's fair... but then don't join. Find a community with rules you can agree to adhere to.

Also, previous experience with bad betas are common. It still doesn't mean you no longer have to follow the rules, and frankly, what you said about your "vision" is a little red flag, IMO. I rarely beta for people, mostly because of authors who cannot handle even the mildest criticism because they think someone is attacking their personal style or their vision.

I've never bought this attitude. Because even though some people think they don't owe creators positive feedback, that sure doesn't stop them from leaving negative feedback. To literally go out of their way and spew their opinions and feelings about a work, and think it's perfectly valid to get in the creator's face about it. Yet, positive engagement is too much to ask for? That's too needy? Too entitled?

Naw. Miss me with that.

Just say you don't want to. Just say it's too much effort. Say anything, except creators don't deserve your concern, or consideration, because that's kind of fucked up.

Oh god, this. I can't STAND most Western queer media and I'm a queer person. It's just so over the top and performative and ridiculous, like rainbows to the face "gay gay gay have I mentioned that I'm gay today?"

I want queer media that's the equivalent of what we get for straight media: stories about people who just happen to be gay, not screaming from the rooftops how gay they are.

The opposite side of this though is when a show or movie shows a character eating, say, ice cream one single time and fandom makes their entire personality that they just fucking love ice cream and would die for ice cream and only want to have ice cream forever.

I agree with a lot of this. Sometimes, my SO and I beta each other's fics, but we tell each other beforehand what we're looking for: Just spelling/grammar, help with a plot point, or whatever they want to question or change. But we start very clear about what we want if we beta for each other. I'm sure the same can be done with other betas.

I once betaed for a fandom acquaintance. who was ESL. I mostly cleaned up grammar, but then made a suggestion that changed her whole story idea. I felt terrible! She said she didn't mind, but it seemed like one little plot inconsistency threw off her whole story. She never asked for that and didn't seem to mind the new direction her story took, but I stopped betaing for anyone but my SO after that.

Same. I've read supposedly beta'd fic that was hideously OOC, and fic written without a beta that was both flawless technically and very much IC.

+1

I leave a lot of kudos and comments, and it's because...I like to do it? If someone wrote a fic that made me happy in whatever way, why wouldn't I want to tell them that? It gives them a little boost, and it is also beneficial to me, because it's likely to encourage them to make more of the content that I like. This is especially true if it's a small fandom or a rare ship.

I don't always do it, sometimes I just don't have the energy and that's okay - but it's something I do sometimes because it makes me feel good.

This whole begrudging attitude is just something I can't relate to at all. If you don't want to comment, don't! It's okay! But it really is an important part of fandom that somebody does, and it's really incredibly easy and no-effort to just hit the kudos button or write, "I liked this. :)" (IF you liked it of course, insincerity doesn't benefit anyone.)

NA - I get quite a few reblogs coming across my dash complaining about how people's posts don't get enough reblogs and engagement, and blaming people who only like and don't reblog for why fandom isn't thriving and why creators are leaving.

What's funny is that in my experience it's usually the bigger names who post/reblog these complaints. I guess they're upset because their posts are only getting 300 notes instead of 3000. Meanwhile, someone like me who agonizes over every little tidbit (anxiety is a bitch) and feels proud (but also terribly inadequate) about my tiny little pile of original posts is honestly thrilled for every single like I get. My long-ass meta that I slaved over even though who fucking even likes meta these days? It got forty freaking notes! It even got 12 reblogs! That's awesome! Enough people liked it that I don't have to feel actively embarrassed for writing it! Win!

YES. I swear most queer people aren't like that so why is it all we seem to be getting in post-2010 "queer media", either that or blatant queerbaiting without canonicals? I know "bury your gays" and "hide your gays" and "gay suffering" are tiring but damn. Sometimes I'd rather have that than the self-gratifying rainbow dystopias (which often make for shallow, unidimensional characters, too) we get in some indie works. Sometimes. I like fun works but it gets tiring too.

I think it's totally fine that you don't want a beta, and I have no beef with anything in this secret. In fact, the fuck-you pettiness is kind of refreshing to me. That said, personally I think you should just let them assign you a beta, and then just ignore as much of the beta's advice as you want.

Having someone to do SPaG checking is really never a bad thing, even if you ignore every other suggestion they make.

A good old Starbuck's PSL. Or a Chestnut Praline Latte when PSLs aren't in season. Otherwise, plain black coffee, but not too strong.

like as an artist? like all her songs are from that perspective? what do you mean by conceive?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of anti-fujoshi people in the MDZS fandom, so it does fit.

I think symbiotic relationships shouldn't take on the nature of obligation....but they are symbiotic. and fic has taken on the community aspects of fandom that makes the relationship between writer and audience very tight. are writers owed anything in general? no. have the unsaid rules of commenting on fic arisen because people like the type of fandom communities that encouragement produces (i.e. you can gain a relationships with the bigshots through commenting)? yes.

you don't have to do anything but the more closely policed a community is, the more the "rules" are in fact obligatory or you have to stop participating in certain aspects of the community if you don't follow them. most fandom communities aren't that policed tho.

Black tea, Yuzu tea, hot chocolate, white hot chocolate with Grand Marnier or another orange liqueur.

If you're talking to anime and manga fans about anime and manga, why would they be calling out Western porn or romance? Go talk to some people into Western porn or romance and there's plenty of criticism.

(I agree with your "ew weird Japanese stuff" criticism though.)

I've been watching Star Wars Theory videos. What if Anakin Liked Sand? is hilarious and awesome.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well...if I volunteer to beta for a big bang or challenge and the writer credits me but doesn't make the changes I suggest, then I look like a crappy beta.

I basically just do spelling and grammar, and ask questions if it's not clear who's doing what, make suggestions if they use epithets or a word that isn't commonly understood in the canon language, too British if it's supposed to be Texans, etc.

However, the people in my fandom tend not to enter these things if they're really bad writers, but someone who asks me to beta better not put my name on something full of errors.

Plus, oh my god...spending time beta-reading their thing and making thoughtful suggestions they ignore because they're too special? Jesus, that's kind of insufferable.

i get your point. i'm just frustrated by westerners making shitty, uninformed takes about media from a culture they're not a part of while actively ignoring any and all japanese voices regarding said media.

i wish they'd stay in their own lane.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I've never used a beta either. I'm not sure how to find one actually.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Those two guys are hot but they look identical to me.

This is the problem with anime for me personally if one of them doesn't have blue hair or something.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Counterpoint: people putting tons of effort into whining about their precious fandom dying, while not putting a single ounce of effort into nurturing said fandom.

There's another secret in this thread that covers Don't Like, Don't Read. Maybe learn to embrace that, instead of making snooty comments about people putting their free time towards creating fanworks that aren't up to your standards.

Also, people are not making you a product. Products are something you do pay for. If you read/watched something to the very end, click the fucking kudos button. It's not gonna kill you.

Milky coffee and Mexican hot chocolate.

If you can't produce fan content without a certain level of engagement, then stop making fan content. The end.

Yep, that's how it works. In a small fandom that can mean no content at all. Depends whether the reader wants free content or not.
