I hated Hook, so I agree. I wish he hadn't stuck around.

I didn't much like Spock either TBH. Bones was the only one I liked until Beyond. If it had just been a whole lot of Bones in the first two movies and Kirk just in the background being pretty, I would have been happy.

Ooh, yeah, very much seconding this. I love dissecting the fiction I like, but that doesn't mean all my thinky thoughts are hills I want to die on. But with fandom culture being the way it is, it feels like there's this need to be really careful about any analysis you make, because there's always going to be people whose response is either, "This doesn't hold up to strong interrogation," or like, "Don't tell me what to think!" and it's like...I was just musing because I like it.

Don't shy away from the truth, anon! Wear that crown, be your royal self. ;P

(Anonymous) 2021-02-16 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
What exactly do people hate about it? I'm not being contrary, I just don't see what makes it hateworthy. It's definitely not my favorite line of the song, but it fits with the rest of the song, and it's not like the rest of the song is a lyric work of genius.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-16 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stand this song either way lol

(Anonymous) 2021-02-16 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Good luck OP! And be patient with yourself!

The only thing I know about either of these is that my father loves the Honor Harrington books. I'll have to ask him whether he's read the other series and if he has any opinions on it.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-16 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I know the line is "bite that tattoo on your shoulder" and yet, no matter what version I hear of the song (I'm very biased for the PMJ's version) I always think it's "by that tattoo on your shouldeR" because it does make sense that is that judgmental, while the other is a change of subject that just doesn't compute in my brain.

I love the Vorkosigan Saga with a bright burning love. but I understand bouncing off books. I tried reading Weber quite a while ago, and bounced hard enough (can't even remember which book at this point) that I never wanted to try the Harrington books. Perhaps at some point I'll give one of them a go, but that would be at some point in the far future, given the number of books I have on my TBR pile.

One of the commenters below had what I think is a good review of what she (and I) think makes the Vorkosiverse good storytelling. And I do tend to agree with people who say that Bujold's writing is pretty damned good.

Reading is, as others have said, a very subjective thing. If you've tried Vorkosigan books and can't get into them, then you can't get into them. That's taste.

This is tough because removing a main character or sidelining them is a pretty massive structural change, and I have a hard time imagining how the show would adapt to that structural change. So there are characters I think are weak main characters, but IDK if I want them sidelined because I don't know how the show would adapt.

Clark Kent was the boring center of Smallville, but it...kind of worked for the story to have this boring, self-righteous, overpowered dude at the center, and then everyone around him is actually interesting.

Scott McCall, yeah, I agree with that one.

Dawson Leery was the worst, imo, but again, what the fuck would Dawson's Creek have done to restructure the narrative if they had sidelined him?

I was constantly frustrated with Clarke on The 100, but in that case I think the character was fine, I just wanted a more compelling actor who would've given the character a greater sense of depth beneath the surface.

OMG, agree so very hard, especially about Simon, Cordelia and Aral (and Lady Vorpatril!) Also agree with you on Captain Vorpatril's alliance!!!!

So, uhm, just dropped by to say that.

Lol but agreed. I found it to be better as an ensemble situation -- each character in moderation, as they all have their own import parts to play. Haven't finished it yet lol

Kingdom Hearts-- I would kill for literally anyone else to be the main character but Sora. He bores me to tears. There's nothing interesting about Genki Boi who Occasionally Gets Sad, and it just feels like so much of the story is just like... happening around him? As though he's just there to briefly emote about it, despite him being intrinsically linked to it. He just feels so blank. Every single other character is more interesting than him.

You know, i always felt like in theory, OUAT was the kind of show I wanted, but I could just never get into it. Maybe it was the storylines or the casting, i don't know. I wanted it to be attractive in a way it wasn't.

Sad because I love Wesley & Sparrow, and I had hoped for Hook but apparently nah

Good luck, OP!

I doubt I'll ever be even a normal weight, nevermind skinny, barring some catastrophic illness, since dieting or limiting what/how much I eat triggers the shit out of me, and I love food (luckily including veggies and fruit, but also cheese, pasta, and sweets) and the only exercise I can afford, don't hate, and that does not require a swimsuit is walking.

I'm up to 7 miles a day this year and I'm at the limit of what I can do on top of my full time job and still have time to eat, sleep, and shower on work nights.

I wouldn't say they "saved" Eurovision. At least not for long enough, they still keep sending very interesting acts with stories in their songs, but it all gets overshadowed by the boring (very white) songs of West and Middle Europe (and Australia). For me personally it has become too boring to sit through all those hours for a handful of exciting performances when there are twenty ballads and some bland pop songs around them. Eurovision really peaked between '00 and '10.

My father: "Pshh, it's way better than the Vorkosigan Saga!"

I'd ask "Are you me?" Except I don't even like Julie much. She falls into the not liking her because she's a main character box for me because I'm over second wave feminism-era tomboy main characters. I think I could've liked her ok or at least not minded her as much if she was the best friend to Ivy's main character.

Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura. She's boring boring boring. Syaoran is a better character and does exactly the same job as her. Though, the dub DID make him a main character on at least her level so they could sell the show to boys too, and I loathe the dub and the reason for the change. But if it'd been that way originally I'd like the show so much more.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-16 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the same thing. It makes more sense with the rest of the song

(Anonymous) 2021-02-16 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
The do it. Write you own philosophy. Who the fuck cares when other people get it wrong. These are your thoughts to be had, fuck all the other who'd have an issue with them. I'm sure there'll be a fuck-ton more of fan who'll actually agree.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-16 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry that you have such an issue with tattoos, but how about next time if you've got such a kink against shoulder ink- you begin with that? idk, maybe then you won't look like such a prick?

(Anonymous) 2021-02-16 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
lol please, don't pretend Marvel wasn't a bunch of re-copied failures from the very beginning. The MCU is the only time they've shined. So wish for your crappy soap opera, I'm sure they'd find a way to make Ironman or Magnus some sort of sugar daddy to carry these characters to the main stage regardless. <3

The year after Lordi won was the best year IMHO, more rock, less bland pop songs.
