Re: Disney question

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Of all the media in the world teaching young girls bad gender dynamics or self worth, I consider Disney movies to be so low on that scale it is negligible. Barring Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, I think every Disney Princess is a strong character that girls (and boys) can enjoy.

I think I'm the same way, OP. I'll occasionally watch a movie at home just so I don't forget how, LOL! Not that I've been to the theater lately.

No personal experience with kids, so take this with a grain of salt, but:

Communication is key. If you want them to be able to recognize Gaston as an example of toxic masculinity, I assume you'd be discussing it with them (in an age-appropriate manner) during or after the movie. No reason you couldn't do the same with the other problematic elements of the movies that aren't deliberate, like the gender dynamics.

Who are these friends?

Because Legion is amazing.

I could be wrong

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
But it seems to me like the haters are mainly people who aren't into the subject matter anyway? I mean, I think it's a well-made film.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Never read the books, but I tried to watch the show because the movie was fun and goddamn is Godfrey Gao hot as fuck. Only problem to me was... NO ONE in that TV show could act. It was just... horrifying to be honest.

All the problems you can find in Disney movies are there because they exist all around us in ways that your niece won't be protected from by not letting her watch them. It's better to use movies that she can still enjoy and point out their shortcomings to her than ignore that they exist and let her discover them herself. And they're hardly the worst examples of the problem, so you don't need to be heavy handed or in depth when you point out their flaws to her. Simple comments like "It would be nice to see some Disney princesses who aren't thin like (princesses in whatever movies she's seen)" can get the idea across fine.

I would say people with no taste but as someone who loves scoping out B horror movies they just say I'm immune to bad movies lol.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT Oh man. I'm so tempted to try it just for him. Just something about that man. What didn't you like about it nonny?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was a bad show, just not my usual gig. Very business oriented from what I remember, which isn't my thing really. I've been meaning to give it another try.

I agree. A lot of people just aren't interested in stories that have any kind of religious connection. Personally I'm crazy about things that have weird Biblical connections. Perhaps because I grew up Southern Baptist and I'm SO familiar with the Bible. (Back in the days of my childhood we practically memorized the sucker.) So it rocks my world to play with that.

Your first sentence is what I was going to say. Hanging out with other kids and/or absorbing things from other sources (including adults) will expose her to these things anyway. It's better to let kids watch them and then have any age-appropriate discussions about them if they come up.

And they are hardly the worst example plus the things kids latch onto might be surprising. I was about 7-8ish when (original) Disney's Beauty and the Beast was first out and didn't care much about the romance or princess dress. I was more bothered about Belle being a reader and struggling to fit in because that was the thing that spoke to me most!

My eldest niece went through a super rigidly girly phase a few years ago when she started attending nursery. Now she's kinda not as into pretty dresses (but still wears them occasionally) and has rediscovered her previous love of Lego and dinosaurs. I know as adults we worry about imposing stereotypes on kids but sometimes you just have to let them be what they're going to be.

Yes to Disney films, yes to all films - particularly ones with historical and cultural significance - so long as you offer an open and safe space for your niece to discuss and analyze all potential topics while also asking her opinion concerning how she herself feels about what she is seeing.

What significant flashbulb memories do you have?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"A flashbulb memory is a highly detailed, exceptionally vivid "snapshot" of the moment and circumstances in which a piece of surprising and consequential (or emotionally arousing) news was learned about."

Take this with a grain of salt because I don't have kids, but honestly, IMO, people overthink this stuff. It's not as simple as "kids are sponges, they soak up toxic messages indiscriminately and it warps them for life". Do the Disney movies contain some problematic concepts, especially when it comes to body image for women? Absolutely. Are some messages better than others? Sure. Will kids even notice? Ehhh... depends on the age, and the kid.

Disclaimer time - I didn't grow up imbibing Disney movies and I wasn't immersed in all the princess stuff. I don't have any nostalgia goggles for Disney stuff, it doesn't interest me at all. Barbies were my thing, so you still have similar issues re: body image. As a kid, I didn't notice. Barbies weren't like human females, they were dolls. I didn't grow up thinking I ought to have giant, gravity-defying tits and a tiny waist. I wanted to be like Barbie in the sense that I had a giant wardrobe, a house and a pony and she was an adult who could do whatever the hell she wanted. (I don't have a nostalgia thing for Barbie, either.)

I'd say sure, let the kid watch (because you'd have to live in a cave in the mountains to avoid Disney stuff from outside sources) and be open to discussion but don't try to force moral messages or make it into a lesson. If you want to gently probe about certain ideas, ask the kid what they think about Gaston... does he seem like a nice person? Would he be a good friend to have? Why or why not? Listen to the answer, then maybe offer your take but don't be ham-handed about it.

And just in general, foster an environment with your kid so that they'll feel comfortable talking to you about anything at all, without getting in trouble or getting yelled at or ridiculed. That'll yield good results for life.

DA
The first season is awesome and absolutely worth a watch but falls apart by the third season. The first season is Breaking Bad-levels good as far as the two lead actors and their rival dynamic goes, IMHO.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not alone, OP! Legion is great! Angels SHOULD be badass and terrifying, and the movie gets super bonus points for genuinely creepy divine presences to accompany the genuinely freaky demon activity. (Though yeah, would still have benefitted from more Paul Bettany-as-Michael.)

I prefer the theatre for films too anon. But I kinda feel like that's being ruined by the people who are used to watching films at home browsing on their phone at the same time? Before the pandemic I can't remember the last time I didn't get so fed up (of seeing a lit-up square constantly entering my line of vision) that I had to tell someone to please put their phone away.

(I know this sort of discussion always attracts people who don't see the issue but personally, I don't know why you would PAY to go to the cinema and spend at least 50% of the time on Instagram or Twitter.)

That sort of china is so gorgeous, I love it too even though it's pricey af. (The show I'm more inclined to associate it with it Jeeves and Wooster, of course!)

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm seriously considering watching it just to see if they are really that bad

Re: What significant flashbulb memories do you have?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh... none I guess?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck! Hope you get them soon!

Re: Disney question

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably nbd; the fact that you all are being mindful and thinking about these issues is probably bigger and more important and impactful than watching individual Disney movies is

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think for me because everyone was kind of flat it ended up cancelling-out in a weird way? Like I think if you put any of those actors up beside... well good actors, their flaws will stand out much more obviously and you can tell how bad they are, but shove them in a room with other iffy actors and it becomes like bad-acting white noise?

Lmao, that's the best way I can think to describe how I watch shows like these and still enjoy them, but then I'm also not there for Noteworthy Performances.

I can never tell if I'm remembering things or remembering my memories of things
