There's a big difference between using the spellings that are correct in the version of English you speak, and using the wrong vocabulary.

But also, you haven't had to read a single one of those HP fics, you whiny little brat.

As an American, it usually doesn't bother me. Honestly, British fandoms have been my faves for so long there are some British words I frequently use myself. And Mum/Mom sound and look so close to me that I rarely even notice the difference.

Also personally I think the British spelling of Judgement is the correct one and hate the American spelling.

Someone did that in almost every chapter of a (US show) fic I was reading and I just gave up reading it in annoyance.

I don't think it's even particularly correct in British English, but is some regionalism.

This is the one that bugs me most. It must be one of those things people don't catch when they are watching their language because it will pop up in fics that otherwise read pretty American.

Brit here. I never even realised that wasn't grammatically correct until I saw people posting about it on here lol. It's a colloquialism I guess, but it's so commonplace that everyone uses it at every strata. (Meaning it doesn't carry any class implications like 'ain't' or 'i seen it')

Yeah I hate seeing Mom in British fandoms too (I also hate Mum in American fandoms).

It just seems inexcusably lazy on the authors' parts.

Agree. This is an easy one to get right, because the characters have probably literally said mom or mum.

Also annoying: when a US actor or notable is interviewed in a UK article and they're quoted saying mum. They didn't say mum, they said mom, and I'm sure the readership will understand that the person is American and that mom means mum. It's like a misquote to me, like if a UK actor was interviewed in Rolling Stone and they literally wrote that he was taking a bawwwth.

It's going to ruin your whole day when you find out that there are whole regions of England that prefer 'mom' over 'mum' then, isn't it? Some regions even go with 'mam'.

I'd have to specifically remember to say 'mum', even in an England-based fic, and I've lived here for all of my 35 years. We say 'mom' here. Of all my friends only one of them says 'mum' and he's not from 'round here (he's originally from Australia).

See, I'm British - but because I've been reading fanfics since I was 12 for the past 20 years and started out as a weeb in fandoms like Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh!; I'm kind of use to the Americanized side of fics (like anything non-American with the exception of UK based media, but written into English for fics) - so much so that I've avoided British based media like Harry Potter and Sherlock when it comes to fanfics, and just write with American spelling/grammar when writing fics.

Of course I do read UK based books and write with regular UK spelling in irl - but when it comes to fandoms/fanfics I just switch over.
Yes I am aware how stupid this sounds.

That doesn't sound stupid.

I'm American but use British English when I write in UK fandoms. If I make an error and use an accidental Americanism I'm gracious about fixing it, since I'm not perfect at it or native, but I think it makes sense to do.

I grew up reading a lot of UK authors and so went to school spelling it 'colour' and such, and got dinged for it. Made me mad.

The odd flat instead of apartment or lift instead of elevator isn't that big a deal, but the mum instead of mom just throws me right out. But if the fic has a lot about babies, though, I have real trouble because there are so many differences - nappy/diaper, cot/crib, pram/stroller, etc.
