I often have an opposite experience, where people tell me about a show/series but are super cryptic because they don’t want to spoil it.

Meanwhile, I know I’m not going to watch/read the thing (and wouldn’t mind spoilers even if I did), but would be happy to discuss what they like about it so much, if they would just tell me what actually happens. I try to say this politely, but instead get “but you *have* to watch/read it! And I don’t want to ruin it for you!”

Heh. I tell people go ahead and spoil me, it might make me want to watch (thing they are so excited about, even if it sounds totally boring or stupid). Also - if i *do* end up watching, I'll have forgotten I even had the conversation at that point, so - no harm done!

If your friend listens to you talk about stuff you're into that they aren't, then I think they deserve better from you. They probably aren't listening in rapt attention when you go on about your stuff either, but they let you talk because it feels good to talk to people we like about stuff we enjoy.

OTOH, if your friend shows little interest or patience for your stuff, then I guess it balances out. *shrug*

And I mean, if they're a one-track-mind type who wants to talk about their latest hyperfixation all. the. time. then okay, I definitely understand that you need mechanisms for shifting the conversation onto other topics. But if they just started watching a show, and they're bringing it up for the first time, I honestly think the good-friend thing to do is let them tell you about it. Not for an hour straight. But ten minutes is not some huge sacrifice.
