I don't write fanfic, I make fan videos. In this day and age, the obvious thing to do would be posting them on YouTube, which I do. Some of my videos have gotten over 100 comments, one has over a thousand. Courtesy says I should thank all of those commenters for their input; it's not fanfiction, but the principle of it is the same, right?

Now you try thanking over 1000 YouTube comments without ending up looking like a total knob. Sometimes it's best just to leave it alone.

153.) The series is a ton of fun. Then again, I didn't like the books. I couldn't get more than a few pages into them without getting bored. Then again, I did the same thing with the Lord of the Rings. I seem to have this thing with liking fantasy adaptions way better than the source material.

103: That whole movie makes me cry. Has ever since I first saw it at the age of 3...

108: This made me LOL, but not in a snarky cruel way.

117: I think it just means you have a heart.

128: I've been wishing she'd make up her damn mind since the 2nd season. The back and forth between her and Lee and Anders made me lose interest in the show for a long time. I don't know if it's that her character is incredibly human or just badly written...

136: That movie is made of awesome. I'm not feeling the burning desire to start a fandom for it though, sorry...

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
142. Actually, a lot of older women collect them. I have mine for help with drawing. Honestly, it didn't take that long to save. I budgeted and was careful with my money. I'm a student, so I don't have any more funds than anyone else here does. I just stopped eating out, buying unnecessary clothing and a few other small things. It's amazing what we waste money on, here and there. Add that all up, and a doll is not that expensive anymore. But anyway, a lot of the people I know who are collectors are older. Like, over 25. The people who CAN reasonably afford them.

Also, the pictures you have up there are dolls from a particular company that gives a LOT of people in the doll hobby the creeps. DOD's dolls are creepy as fuck to me. Granted, I like my dolls more realistic, but DOD is an older company. The anime thing doesn't do it for everyone. And they're creepier in owner pictures than they are in company photos.

154. tl/dr You just don't like it because it's cool to hate something that's popular.

[identity profile] pkbitchgirl.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I didn't think TDK was all that great either, I liked it, it was extremely well made but I found it dragged in places. I liked The Joker though, and no, it's not because Heath died, I don't buy into celebrity hype.

I enjoyed Hellboy 2 more to be honest even though TDK was a superior film, it was depressing in places, Morgan Freeman is a God though

...Am I the only one thinking troll? Even though there are people stupid enough to do that, I doubt they'd go bragging about it to everyone without expecting everyone to wank about it.

140) I admit, I read it because I heard it was taboo. But it was so much more than "lol pedo" that it kind of annoys me that this is the first thing people think of when they hear about the book. Just reading the book, for me, was engaging thanks to the wordplay/humour/alliteration/etc.

146) No. You didn't.

Aw man, next time I pick the book up I'm going to be staring at the stupid cover and remembering your secret. GAH!

OHGOD I AM SO LATE but, OP, they're planning to continue the storyline in both comic and movie form. don't worry, bryan fuller wouldn't let PD go that easily. :)

103 - THIS.

110 - Aw, I remember this cartoon. And I agree, OP, I agree.

113 - I hope you're a troll, and if you're not a troll I hope that you get fired, asswipe.

117 - I don't think you're pathetic or overinvested at all. You're just showing a natural sympathetic response. I cry at the drop of a hat when it comes to anything about children growing up in poor conditions, and I always wish I could do more to help them.

142 - AM I THE ONLY ONE OTHER THAN THE ORIGINAL OP WHO RECOGNIZED THIS SECRET? (Looked through 11 pages of comments, fail). I mean, yeah, over a year ago, but still it's not like we get many dollfie secrets. I feel like a pathetic loser now.

And on that note, how many people who still respond and post here have been at F!S from the beginning (other than technophile)? I haven't, but I know I've been here for a long while.

103. I never used to be able to cry at movies until I saw The Land Before Time about... eight years ago? Just that bit where Littlefoot sees his shadow on a rock and thinks it's his mother and he tries to lick it. :(

106 - i cant bring myself to watch that show - its like a poor man's 'all that'. only, as evidenced by the commercials, not even REMOTELY funny.

132 - fellow bitter fan agrees whole-heartedly; though ive pretty much given up on the show altogether.

125: hahah wow a lot of the time people are like "can't unsee it" and I can't see anything but THIS is seriously different... and they're even wearing similar clothes and folding their arms. hahahaha wow
133: well okay... that's all I have to say about that
135: HEY I THINK OF THAT TOO! Seriously I keep thinking "lol harry drowning in the icy pond thing"
145: HEY IS THAT THE PHANTOM DUDE WHO IS LIKE I AM EVERYTHING I AM NOTHING BECAUSE I HAVE A MASSIVE PAINTING OF HIM IN MY HOUSE AND IT USED TO SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF ME
149: hahaha Beyond Birthday that's AWESOME. seriously I love that person

[identity profile] simmy549.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
also 113: okay a while ago I looked at the wiki page for that, and it seemed relatively normal, and then I looked at some of the earlier comments for this fs and okay now it seems incredibly NOT normal
and therefore, WHY
also now I want to watch some of it but will probably stop five minutes in out of terror D=

God, aren't you pretentious.

Nabokov is famous for writing great novels, not for pedo stuff. Your secret just screams 'OMG I LIEK NABOKOV LOOK HOW SPESHL I ARE!' :/. You know, all well-read people read it.

154. IKR

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
112. I write for myself. There's a lot of things that are never going to see daylight, because they're for me. Then there's some stories I write with another audience in mind too. So I put them out there for other people to enjoy, since it's silly to say "I wrote this with you in mind but you can't see it, neener neener". But when I take one of my fics (my babies) and out it out there, it makes me nervous and antsy about what people are going to think of it. Wanted reassurance that it's a worth-while story isn't "feedback whoring", it's knowing that you put your heart into something and being nervous about it. When I reply to a review, I'm not really thanking them for reading it. I'm thanking them for reassuring me that it was worth reading. But it goes both ways—if all they can say is the equivalent of "thanks", that leaves me wondering what in the world to say back.

Maybe if I put it a different way. This is a barter economy, but a weird one. I offer the story, in advance, with no guarantee of additional payment beyond the reward of having created it (which covers overhead costs in terms of emotion, or else I wouldn't still be writing after so many stories uncommented on). In return, they offer feedback if the story is worth the trade (profit!). After that 'deal' is done, for me, it's really a matter of personal preference as to how the discussion is closed or continued. If the review was elaborate, it signals to me that this person would like the discussion to continue. If it was only "good story", then I don't feel obligated to continue it because there's nothing to suggest they care about a coninued exchange. Personally, I feel embarrassed when someone leaves a small comment like that, because if they can't think of anything more to say, I feel like I failed to make a worthy offering. I'm much more likely to want the discussion closed because of that.

Of course, venue counts for a lot. I love reviews, even the "great fic, write more!" ones, but I want my readers to know that I care more about their feedback than as food for my ego. I just think that there's some significant site-culture differences, and that effects how I handle it. I reply to all of my readers on my LJ, unless I have reason not to. (Troll, etc.) But honestly, FFN's too cumbersome to reply in unless I'm going to say something more than an elaborate version of "thank you for reading". I feel like it's rude to give such a bland, unthinking response, but sometimes that's all you can give. Obviously I'm in the camp that hates disingenuous copypasta replies. Of course, I hate leaving copypasta reviews too, so hopefully I'm not too much of a hypocrite. When I review on FF.N, I don't expect a reply, but that's probably a hold-over from the days before they had a reply capability. LJ, however, is made for conversations, so to me it seems significantly ruder not to reply on LJ, even if it's only fifty different ways of saying "thank you for reassuring me that I can write".

Urgh, I'm rambling today. TL;DR, if you want a reply to your comments, the best bet is to make sure there's something to reply to. I don't feel it's the author's fault for not feeling the need to spend ten seconds in return for the reviewer's ten seconds.

114. Don't know what that series is and I don't care, but for goodness sakes, aren't we past using minority epithets as insults?

119. When you get around to motherhood, OP, feel free to have my share. The world needs mothers who want to be mothers.

135. ... I think I love you OP. I do that sort of thing with almost all of my music. The Pretender by the Foo Fighters? Was made for Harry in book five.

No, really, it would be perfect stop looking at me like that! ¬¬

142. Is there a new trend going around that can be described as "end a secret with a random insult"?

146. I see what you did there. :| Not cool. (reaches for the eyeball bleach)

142 - at least they aren't buying realdolls... those things are just creepy.

151 - I just find it ironic that right after doing that movie, she played Kitty Pryde, a comic character known for her affections for older men.
