116. What they need to do is stop killing off/getting rid of all the brown people (except Mohinder obv.) and bring back Monica and Micah, then they need to kill the SHIT out of Claire and Peter, let Sylar and Bennett have their huge Moby Dick-style showdown, and then END END END and let the actors go on to do other things. Seriously, Heroes, enough already. The only way you could get more embarrassing is if you had, like, Heroes In Space, or Heroes Go To Hawaii.

I only say these things out of love.

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG I TOTALLY WANT HEROES GO TO HAWAII.

BUT ONLY IF IT INVOLVES SYLAR FALLING INTO A VOLCANO.

While that I agree it's polite to respond to fic comments and always try to keep up with that myself, the way you're looking at this seems a little strange to me.

The author has already taken the time to write a fic, which they then post for the sake of others' entertainment. If you read and enjoy that fic, leaving a comment is basically saying "thank you" for their efforts, which are often considerable. It's not that you "owe" them so much as it's unkind to benefit from their work and not take the time to leave even a brief acknowledgment when you're done. The author has no way of knowing you read it at all unless you say something, even if all you say is "Neat!"

THAT SAID, again -- it's polite to thank people for comments, though I personally feel a little silly just saying "thank you" over and over again. But you know, it's a bit like thanking someone for a thank you note. ^_^;

Re: 112

[identity profile] little-dumpling.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
to commenter: You seem to be able to put into words what I cannot, and for that I love you.

to OP: I think it also has something to do with the fact that in ffn authors often don't receive criticism about how they've done, and only get to improve as they keep writing and finding mistakes themselves. But one doesn't want to continue if they have no reassurance that they've done a good job. It's the same for me with any art shows I have. If I don't get even one person who comes up and says, "I like your work", I feel completely destitute, and find it hard to ever let anyone see my work again.

While I try to reply to every comment I get, I am also reminded that I write in fairly small fandoms, or at least, the amount of people who comment is rather small (it may just be that I'm a horrible writer, so people don't want to comment). Were I to have too many comments, I myself might stop replying. Writers do need some time to spend actually, you know, writing.

118 LOL

128 I agree.

140 First, a lot of people do read it in college literature classes, which I think is more appropriate as it takes a certain maturity to appreciate it. Second, fandom is all about the most superficial aspects of every canon, and then using those aspects to either get into really stupid arguments (Lolita/Humbert v Lolita/Quilty ship wars anyone?) or write a lot of porn. Fandom just isn't going to appreciate the book the way you want them to.

Ugh, I totally get you, even though I'm one of them.

I reply to only a few comments because I just never know what to say. Writing a short 'Thank you' under every comment seems really rude and impersonal, so I tend to just leave them be if I don't have anything else to talk about.
Does this even make sense? D:
Well, just know that most writers/artists really do appreciate every feedback they get!

Re: 112

Seriously? You think people hate him because he's not a clone of his brother?

Everyone I've talked to is frustrated by him for exactly the opposite reason: the show pretty much treated him as a convenient replacement for his brother for the first half of the season.

Not that I hate him--I loved Lockon too much, and if you go to the effort of seeking out the extra material and novels where they flesh Lyle out, there is an interesting character there--but I hate the way the show handled him, and it's not because I expected him to be a clone of Neil.

Re: 131

(Anonymous) 2009-03-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it frustrating because I dislike Lyle. I always did; the one chance the show had to change my mind was wasted by the writers because they decided it'd be better to do a major time skip.

Glad to hear that the extra material and the novels did a better job.

103. http://xkcd.com/233/

112. You know, I get really nervous about responding to reviews. Most of the time, I'm caught in the worry that on the one hand the commenter might be hoping for a reply (I like to get replies when I review, personally) and I am grateful for the feedback, but on the other hand I'm afraid I'll come of as obnoxious/arrogant/attention-whoring if I reply to every single one, like I'm assuming I'm just so special that everyone wants a reply from me.

I over-think a lot of things, I think.

121. What do you miss, exactly, out of curiosity? It was nice to have a smaller fandom with a somewhat higher average level of intelligence... but I'm so glad the kink meme helped diversify the pairings being written at least a little. Gain something, lose something.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, it's not obnoxious at all - at least, I don't think so. Seems like the polite thing to do to me. *shrug*

103. It's not the most traumatic movie death to me, but it's sure high up there.

104. Norsk?

112. I try my best to reply to any and all comments to my stories. I'm not popular or anything, but the handful of replies I get make me so ridiculously happy I can't even begin to describe it. However! There are times that I fail to respond. But is not because I feel that I "don't owe the readers replies", it's because I... ah, how to explain? It's because sometimes the feedback is something so extremely flattering, or something that makes me feel like a real writer, or just makes me so very happy that I want to accurately put into words what the comment meant to me. So I think about how to put it into words; how to get the gratitude across without seeming like some attention-starved and weepy loser. The days pass, and I'm still thinking. And before I know it a week has passed, and I still haven't been able to think up anything decent. So then I start having to mentally add another part to my reply, i.e. explaining why it took me so long to reply -- and when I try to explain that I feel like even more of a moron, and even more time passes, and yadda yadda. You get the picture, I hope. You have no idea how sorry and ashamed I am about this, but I just can't help it.

131. As a fan of Lyle, I don't think that should be a secret :\

145. Oh. My. God. Are you me?! I wish to God the rumors about an upcoming true sequel (with Billy Zane and all) were true.

150. Even though it technically isn't BL, there are plenty of pairings that are inferred to be canon -- and that's one of them X3

Re: 145

[identity profile] koh4711.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw that secret and thought it was really awesome to see someone else remembered that movie. It was such a fun one to watch. Also, I've never understood how Billy Zane never ended up a bigger star. I'd not heard anything about a sequel, but the way I figure, if we're getting a Tron sequel 20+ years later, why not Phantom?

...I'm going to end up renting this weekend now.

129. B-but I love silly, goofy Gourry! Sure, the anime version is kinda dense, but he's also exceedingly loyal, highly skilled, and just an all around good guy.

142. Personally, I just think they're extraordinarily creepy as fuck. But, to each their own, I guess.

149. *lol* That's kinda all sorts of awesome.

He's just as silly in the novels, he's just not as dense. All of that except the denseness is the same. It's such a drastic change though.

Haha, me too! (Well, not Aishiteruze baby, which I though wasn't terribly good, though my boyfriend loves it) But then I remember 3D children are sticky and annoying and take over your life. XDD If people can have 2D fetishes, I can have 2D maternal instincts!

117 - I think she's adorable. I want to see both her and the little boy from the slums do well for themselves because it's horrible seeing them going back to nothing. It horrible to see little kids having to live in that kind of squalor anyway. Poot.

136 - Ponderosa Pine, oo-oooh. *Ahem.* Sorry.

148 - I desperately want him to have his own show where he enthuses about physics'n'shit now. I'd have been happy if that entire episode of Qi had just been him rambling while Sir Stephen of Fry occasionally interjected, instead of Alan Davies gurning through half the run time. As usual. Ben Miller's Funky Physics Funtime - there's your title, The BBC, now commission that bad boy!
