I'm not in the fandom or anything, but I had seen the stage production twice before watching the movie. I knew it was kitsch and the singing wasn't superb, but I rather liked the lush pictures.

I thought that the movie was absolutely ace... UNTIL I saw the stage show version, which was infinitely better. Emmy Rossum looks like a plastic doll, they screwed up the order of the scenes, and Gerard Butler was nowhere near deformed enough. Also, why a sword fight when you can have the Phantom throwing fireballs?! Why?!

Because swords are cooler than fireballs ;) I could be biased though.

I love Brooke to pieces so I know I'm totally biased... but I'm glad she's Jamie's godmother.

108 - everyone says "ZOMG! Michael Jackson!" at the Johnny Depp version, but the Gene Wilder is creepier as far as his attitude towards the kids go. Depp!Wonka ain't a pedo, he looked at the kids like they were cockroaches FCS

114 - IMO, there is nothing spoilery about what comes next, all it shows is "there's gonna be violence in the ep!", the only difference is it's someone new getting punched every week

123 - which cartoon is that from? It doesn't look like the design from the version with the 'heroes in a half shell, turtle power!' theme

I like the kids--with the exception of Freddie Highmore, I think they're all better in th original--but it doesn't stay true to Dahl's vision too much; does it. I guess I shouldn't comment about overreacting since I start yelling every time someone calls the Tim/Johnny one a "remake," because it's NOT a remake, it's just another version of the same book. But the movies have nothing to do w/ each other. And the new one's definitely better, you're right.

133. OK, I'm gonna defend this shit, yet again: Sarah Brightman is an amazing singer, but her voice is totally wrong for the part. Yes, I know, ALW wrote it for her, and yet I still think that. Christine's supposed to be all young and new, not a seasoned, strong soprano like SB is! And I just...cannot stand Michael Crawford. YEAH, I SAID IT. His voice is too close to tenor range for me, and I just don't think he understands Erik. He's said in interviews that he pities him greatly--you're supposed to get him, not pity him. I mean, he's tragic, but...aargh, I can't explain it. I just hate him a lot. But anyway, Patrick Wilson and Miranda Richardson are also KICK-ASS in that movie. Yes, it's awkward that he does a flat-out American accent, but he's still perfect for the role. And the costumes were frickin' fantastic. And besides, music in movies kinda always sounds better because they can have a huge orchestra instead of just a pit one. [/end rant]

Re: #152 - First off, if you aren't dead, there's always time to grow close to someone, and secondly, they're actors. Now, they do appear to be extremely close, and good for them if they are in *~whatever fucking capacity~*, but I take everything celebs do with a huge fucking grain of salt. I mean, non-famous people lie all the fucking time, if celebs are any different they're probably just worse :/ (plus, if you get that close to someone you get to enjoy every other jealous asshole out there accusing you of being codependent, and trust me, that gets old really fast)

It's why I'm always gonna have a massive soft spot for him, to be honest. Anybody who loves that much, and wears his heart on his sleeve like he does, pretty much wins my undying affection.

And yeah, I wish I could be more like that, too.
