101: Some people honestly deserve to be punched. Anyone starting wank, especially.

107:...Are we Watchmen fans really that scary? You've got your elitist neckbeard sure...but...seriously?

113: I fucking love Goode. He's such a lovable asshole, just like Veidt's supposed to be.

146: And I respect your opinion for not liking it. But I'd like to add in two cents about Watchmen.

Yes, it started the "grim and gritty" era of comics, but it was really meant to satirize the writers during that period in the 80s that wanted to bring comics back to be DARK AND EDGY after the campy Silver Age era of the 50s and 60s, the era in comic book history that some of the characters in the narrative are based off of. It's basically applying GRIMDARK to a genre that originally didn't have it, which was what a lot of writers at the time were itching to do. Moore just satirized it. The authors being satirized took it as a reason to churn out MORE grimdark.

I liked the characters of Watchmen the way I liked the characters in Sienfeld: they're mostly assholes. That's what I loved about them. I also liked that Moore managed to write them sympathetically at some points.

The story and designs are meant to be generic with odd washout coloring(not unlike the bland coloring of Silver Age comics, you know, before fancy Photoshop tools). It's a deconstruction of the superhero genre mixed in with a bit of Cold War uneasiness. NOW, I didn't think it was perfect (far from it, actually; it probably hasn't aged well for the average person), but it was a great read nonetheless.

Just my opinion, though. I can understand why you didn't like it, given all the crazy-ass hype.

(inb4 'cool story, sis')

146 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude I didn't like it before the movie hype – I read it because I liked some of Alan Moore's stuff for 2000AD and I thought that I would like it because it was also by Alan Moore. How wrong I was! :'D I didn't like it because I don't like reading stories where everyone is an asshole omg it is so realistic because ... you know ... I give a shit about people more when they have, like, redeeming features. I think that is kind of reasonable, although I am aware some people do think that a work of fiction is only true to life if everyone is horrible and horrible things happen to all of them.

108. It's the other way 'round for me: love the original, loathe the new one. Also, I think Depp's Wonka is -way- more creepy... ^^

Re: 108

Gene Wilders Wonka seemed to like children, Depp's Wonka looked at them like they were disease-ridden roaches

119. Agreed. Not on the part where it's only in that form though. But yeah, definitely in that form. Oh god we need help.

124. Man it's been a long time since I read Conan... were those two ever important in any way beyond their initial poisoning of the main character? Did they even make any appearances after that?

129. Like Power Rangers, you say? Well, I do have an insanely high cheese-tolerance, do tell me about this Aaron Stone. Does he punch mooks who just flail around and make them explode, or transform or summon giant robots? Does he have an insanely addictive theme-music too?

150. Really? Darnit, I liked Drillhair and Neo-Lan together... oh well. Can't win 'em all.

165. Shirley Holmes? British detective show for the wee ones, I take it? Man, that kid's glasses are epic dorkery enough to make me want to watch it.

120.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_sabriel/ 2009-03-06 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What fics were you reading? I was in the fandom approximately 10 years ago, and I didn't see any of that stuff floating around.

Re: 120.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Sandy Youko's fanfiction (which is still going strong, it seems), Hikari Nanase, Joisbishmyoga. They were recommended to me and I don't understand why. The stories are rife with OOC.

...didn't Hiei attempt suicide on the show? But yeah, I know what you mean about some of the old fanfic. Especially the "Kurama being Catholic" one. There's a fanfic out there with Hiei being Catholic too, and fighting for the Pope. It burns.

I stand up in defense of Mina Lightstar and Arigatomina. They're awesome old fandom writers. And I agree that most of the new fanfiction once you wade through the Mary Sues is wonderful.

Do I know you?

Re: 120

[identity profile] brieze.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
No... Hiei never tried to commit suicide in the show. What part are you thinking of?

143. Oh, I understand. The show had an entirely different chemistry with each cast. I agree with your shipping arrangement as well. The original cast could have gone any way. But not the second...it's just not there.

113. NEW "I'D HIT IT" PHRASE IS WIN. Also, have you seen Imagine Me and You? He was in that too, and he was lovely.

118. Why have I never seen this secret before? I shipped it too. D: The entire movie I thought they were going to go there, and then....

130. Ahaha, I love this secret.

151. Aw, you know, for all the wank in fandom, there are some really nice people. You met some before, right? There's tons more out there, but they're never going to know you unless you put yourself out there. (Also, as for the 'doing it wrong' problem, lurk at the coms for a few day or so and pay attention to the format everyone is posting in. Read the com rules. It shouldn't be too tricky.)

I loooooove future fics! I wrote future!Molly from Heroes once, and I never had as much fun writing something as I did with that! It's like... their characters are basically your own creations, but the world they live in is not. It's like combining original fic with fanfic.
If you ever write this, please let me know, ok? ;-)
