Indeed. That's pretty much how I felt about it until I got more into comics and the movie hype started and suddenly I was constantly surrounded by people more or less telling me that I had to like it, and gradually my indifference was transformed into loathing. :(

Re. 133

[identity profile] lacommunarde.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It was so damn dismal. Actually, no wait. Only the sound was dismal, and then only when Gerard Butler (a wonderful rock singer and a pretty cool actor - particularly in Dracula 2000, which is a surprisingly decent movie) is singing with alto (okay, maybe second soprano, but either way she couldn't hit the higher notes) Emmy Rossum. Now, don't get me wrong, it was visually stunning. It's just Gerard Butler's voice cannot do Erik, and also has some major problems staying in key. I mean, when my dad can sing "Music of the Night" better than a portrayal of Erik can, we have problems... big problems. Now, this could be because I dislike ALW in general, but at least, given the right actors, his stuff sounds okay normally. Do you have to ruin what already lacks? Could you just have found a voice actor like Minnie Driver did for her music numbers?
Still, if you mute the movie during some sections, it is a visually stunning movie. Also, Miranda Richardson and Minnie Driver and whoever plays Andre and Firmin could have carried the movie. Why not give them their full number of songs? ("Notes/Twisted Every Way" just vanished, also, I can't help it, I love the original mad laugh at the end of "All I Ask of You (Reprise)" - it's so much more Erik, than anything in the second half of that entire musical).

Now, as for why I dislike ALW so much. Listen to any of the newer, amazing musicals - from the Secret Garden, to Notre Dame de Paris, to Lord of the Rings, to Jekyll and Hyde, to the concept casts of Tale of Two Cities or Count of Monte Cristo. They have something musically that ALW musicals don't. Also, they sound more like operas, which correct me if I'm wrong, but it should sound even the slightest bit like an opera; it is after all called Phantom of the Opera.
And don't even get me started on author/musical-writers who let themselves become so arrogant it gets in the way of enjoying their stuff.

Other than that... How do you turn a character as amazing as Erik into a whiny bitch?! Also, the Persian is there for a reason. This reason is to remind us that Erik is a man, that he has a history, and that his life was so far from normal that he's making one last bid for a normal life. Also, leave in the actual way it ended, thank you very much. Torture chamber with gunpowder at the bottom with Raoul drowning inside and ventriloquist, talking in third person Erik going quite mad outside it in his little house with what he wants to be his little wife is infinitely cooler than emo!Erik with no apparent abilities (the movie deleted the few abilities ALW left to him. In the book, Erik is just more of an awesome and much more sympathetic character.

Also, the movie made my history obsessed self go wtf, wouldn't that be in the middle of the Commune or the Seige of Paris? Couldn't that not work? Just do a minute of research and you will realize why that date wouldn't work.

So, yes, if you don't mind muting the movie during some sections and some glaring historical inaccuracies, it is a rather spectacular movie, if designed to disappoint fans.

125. HAHAHA I don't blame you, they're adorable. I'll take RDJ while you're with Susan though, kthnx.

133. I saw that movie first, and I loved it, but then I saw it on Broadway, and it was... epically better. I still like the movie, but it's nothing compared to a stage production, I agree. I hated Raoul in the movie, but the actor on Broadway was so excellent, I stopped loathing the character so much.

133

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Thank you!

It's odd, because I adore Patrick Wilson in other things, but he does *nothing* for me in Phantom. His singing was oddly emotionless--it's like he wasn't even there.

♥ stage!Raoul.

[identity profile] nom-anor.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't agree more. The original Canadian cast will always be my favorite, particularly Colm Wilkinson.

Re: 133

[identity profile] lacommunarde.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That version just makes me twitch a little every time I hear it. He's got this amazing voice and he's real age. Still, I always think of him as Valjean from Les Miserables. Also, his voice kind of shows his age. Regardless, he's got to be the best casting for Erik.

146. But don't you know dark and gritty are the only 'real comics' these days.. [/sarcasm]
I love Watchmen, but I can't stand, for example, the current Earth-616 canon, Skrulls, registration, killing the Cap etc.
While Watchmen is considered by a large amount of people to be the greatest graphic novel of all time, and it is good, it doesn't mean everyone has to like it.

I read it up to "Shura is in love with Yoko Kurama" and thought "oh man, I'd read that," but then it had to continue with "...'s prostitute son", didn't it. Yeah, that's a Do Not Want. I've had a soft spot for Shura developing a conflicted crush on Kurama since forever, though! It only seems natural, since he's his father's son, and all.

P.S. You forgot those awful fics about Yoko Kurama's childhood and his abusive father who whored him out.

I AGREE WITH THIS.

I don't care if the musical is nothing close to the book -

THE MOVIE takes the MUSICAL and RIPS IT A NEW ONE. It makes the Phantom look TOO good.

I'm sorry. I think the fandom behind the movie musical is stupid and if anybody says that they 'like it' and don't give a legit answer, I will ignore them. Because half the time its about Phantom x Christine or Gerard and Emmy. Which both were unqualified singers.

I support the stage production and I always will. Why? Cause Raoul is not a wife beater. :)
