I made fried rice the other night, with big shrimps and eggs and mushrooms, ginger and garlic and onions and just the right amount of soy sauce. I also had a coconut scone for breakfast this morning.

Why do you think it's copaganda? The one that I read, it was packed with the culture clash between the... 'responsible' policing of the new kids and the nasty pieces of work that just beat up suspects until they got a confession.

Investigating the flaws of something, and how it can be better, isn't any kind of propaganda.

Or does the tone shift radically as the series goes along?

Star Trek Picard adores its female leads. The most popular ship (more than twice the next most popular) is Seven of Nine/Another Woman in Her Fifties. Agnes Jurati is pretty popular, too.

I've not read any of his non Doctor Who works, so I can't comment. I didn't generally like his Doctor Who works though, or his writing style, so I dunno.

James Herbert's The Rats: I can't decide if this trilogy is the creepiest horror trilogy ever, or I just found it so because it was the first set of horror books I ever read. Either way, a fear of giant rats has stayed with me.

I wish we had monowheeled motorbikes like the ones out of Venus Wars. Hey, Elon, get on it.

I hate when in movies and tv shows, people are in a car and the driver takes their eyes off the road to have a conversation with people inside the car for minutes on end. It always raises my anxiety level; eyes on the road, people.

I liked Terminator: Dark Fate. If it had come out a couple of years earlier or later, so it wasn't in the crosshairs of those go-woke get-broke misogynists at the top of their little crusade, it would have been a lot better received I feel.

Star Trek TNG: Homeward. The main plot is bad, but also it ignores the Enterprise's basic science mission. When faced with a dying planet, the senior staff can debate whether to save the natives or not, but the rest of the ship should be scrambling to get biosamples, plants, animal specimens, soil mycorrhiza, etc too. This is the last chance to get them before they are gone forever. And there is none of that. Everyone stands around and just says welp, everything's dead, now lets argue about Worf's brother instead. There is none of the buzz of background activity there oughta be.

Moon Knight: Gus the one finned goldfish damn well better be okay. I don't care what happens to the rest of the characters, it is the fish I am invested in.

Encanto - It drives me crazy that Isabella was only making flowers. It's an inane waste of her gift. How did none of them have her growing crops?

I only have one VHS tape that is locked away out of reach of my kids, but unlike other people my forbidden tape is not porn. It is my guilty pleasure movie, Gunga Din. I love that old movie for family reasons, but I sooooo would not want my children watching it. It is too full of just about every -sim you can name. Still, that moment Din blows the bugle to warn the British gets me every time.

It's a stupid premise and it shouldn't be taken seriously (and I don't), but I fucking love the Battleship movie.

It's just fun.

(Plus Rihanna. And the soundtrack.)

La-la-la-la, I'm not listening. I can't hear you.

Gus is fine. Whatever happened, he is just vanished, not dead. Poor Gus. Maybe we're about to see Iron Goldfish come to the rescue.

I will never see Star Trek Discovery as anything more than a reboot of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, and certainly not Star Trek.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-05 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Outside of Star Trek and Leverage I haven't really seen any, tbh, but I am also not looking so that might be why.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This was my feeling as well fwiw

getting a load of veterans to reactivate the missouri while thunderstruck blares will never not be awesome

(Anonymous) 2022-04-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, femslash fandoms, obviously

(Anonymous) 2022-04-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, nonny! And yes, it was wayyyyy funnier that way.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-05 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, agreed. It's pretty unfortunate that some fans are way behind the times when it comes to not being shitty about female characters. I know the intended Chinese audience still has this problem, but really, the English-speaking audience wants to do this too? It's dumb.

also, the group of people they do save is too small to populate a whole planet without a lot of inbreeding, and since Worf's brother got one of those women pregnant, there are going to be a whole lot of awkward questions when that half-human baby is born since he's passing himself off as one of them. (I'm not even going to get into the fact that the woman he got pregnant is supposed to be charming and innocent but just comes off as dumber than a box of sticks.)
erinptah: Human Luna (sailor moon)

[personal profile] erinptah 2022-04-05 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
...I feel like most shows with female leads (or co-leads) tend to pick up fandoms that are into them. Doctor Who, Once Upon A Time, Legends of Tomorrow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Steven Universe, all the criminal procedurals led by m/f duos, all the Disney princess franchises, and the entire magical-girl genre, for instance.

(Unless you were asking for cdrama fandoms specifically -- I'm not familiar enough with those to list any.)

(Anonymous) 2022-04-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's excellent.
