Who is your least favorite film director

(Anonymous) 2022-04-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
And how many of their movies have you seen?

Re: Who is your least favorite film director

(Anonymous) 2022-04-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Zack Snyder, and too damn many. Closely followed by Nolan and Bay.

And whasisname who did The Last Jedi too.

“Whasisname” is Rian Johnson and I was actually close to listing him among my favorites.

I haven’t even seen TLJ and I didn’t like Looper, but I loved Brick and The Brothers Bloom so much. (Knives Out was pretty good too.)

James Cameron is up there. I don't think I've liked a single one of his movies. I've seen 7 I believe.

Zack Snyder. I've seen 12 of his movies and only liked 1 of them (300).

Shyamalan. So overrated, even the movies other people say are good I don't like. Their entire drawing point is the reveal, so they are no good for rewatching. To me a movie isn't good unless you can watch it over and over again and still enjoy. I've seen 10 of his movies.

That's a fair criticism of Shyamalan, but I would argue Split as an exception. I knew the "twist" going in and thought it was good. I liked it just as much the second time.

(Admittedly, I do think he fumbled it at the very last second by not ending the movie on the scene in the cop car, but it wasn't enough to ruin the movie for me.)

Same with all of these

Gods, I hate Shyamalan. Especially motherfucking Split.
Split is in my top-5 movies I hate with passion

Quentin Tarantino. I think I've seen 4 of his movies.

Roman Polansky, Woody Allen, Quentin Tarantino and Michael Bay.

Re: Who is your least favorite film director

I just don’t watch enough movies to be qualified to answer this. I can’t think of any cases where I strongly disliked more than two of their movies. I hated Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby, so Baz Luhrmann comes to mind, but those are the only movies of his I’ve seen. I also hated The Host and Okja, so Bong Joon Ho comes to mind, but again I haven’t seen any of his other movies. If I ever get around to watching Parasite and I dislike it, then I’ll feel justified in saying he just doesn’t do it for me as a director.

Maybe Michael Bay, for reasons that have been well covered.

Re: Who is your least favorite film director

(Anonymous) 2022-04-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Probably Michael Bay? The thing about Michael Bay is, even the films of his that I like, I hate. I like The Rock but I feel gross about liking it because it's such an ugly movie, just like all of his movies are.

This accuracy, though.

Stanley Kubrick, I haven't seen any film in full, because I dislike his work so much. But because some of his movies are seen as cinematic touchstones, they are pretty pervasive in pop culture, so I have involuntarily seen a lot of scenes and/or have a lot of knowledge of them.

Agreed. His work is pretentious crap.

I'll be roasted by someone for this but Wes Anderson. I have seen so many of his films because members of my family Love him. But his stuff is a hit or miss for people and I can't stand the aesthetic and how all his dialogue sounds like it does.

I'm inclined to put Tim Burton here as well because, while I have seen a whopping 18 of the movies he's directed (almost all of them) I really only think 2 of them are very good.

Re: Who is your least favorite film director

(Anonymous) 2022-04-10 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree on Wes Anderson. I get why people like him but his movies are just so affected, and it's just not an aesthetic that I'm obsessed with. Royal Tenenbaums is the only movie of his I can even stand, and I still don't like it that much.

Tim Burton... I think the only movies of his I like are his Batman movies. But I like those a lot, so I don't think I could include him on a least favorite directors list. Honestly might be my favorite Batman movies.

Wes Anderson is interesting for me. Everyone I know always assumed/assumes I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan, but I've never actually really watched any of his films. I recall seeing trailers for "Rushmore" and I really wanted to watch it, but I just...never got around to watching it. And then IDK I really got into the whole "cinephile" thing because DVDs were so easy to get access to, and they came with commentaries and BTS extras, like, we were so well fed. There were a lot of great directors I really got into and Wes Anderson and his movies just never popped out above the other directors and other movies. A few years ago I watched "Moonrise Kingdom" and while I found it an enjoyable film...I don't know. Meh? I also watched "The Royal Tenenbaums" recently and...it's good but...eh? Like, I don't know. His films are good and I understand the appreciation for the aesthetics and cinematography but...I don't know. Sofia Coppola gets me more. Edgar Wright's more fun. They both have better music. I wouldn't say I don't like Wes Anderson, but I just don't feel a need to get into his films.

LMAO I need to reevaluate Tim Burton movies. I grew up watching a lot of his films, but as the years have gone by I think I need to re-evaluate if his films have aged well/if I still have the same tastes/thoughts on his films. I recall watching "Beetlejuice" a few years ago and feeling underwhelmed, but I was only half watching it on Halloween. His best films are the ones that are directed by Henry Selick

Agreed with Tim Burton, definitely! I only like his Batman movies, but I hate the rest of his films, and his whole aesthetic with a passion! It’s so petty on my part, but I really can’t stand him! It doesn’t help that I’ve had several friends in the past that were basically obsessed him and his movies when they were going through a goth phase, and one in particular that watched The Nightmare Before Christmas everyday until she finally got sick of it, and would constantly sing songs from it, and would refuse to stop when I was trying to focus on something or watch TV. We were already adults when she did this. So that didn’t help endear me to Tim Burton, even though that’s not his fault.

I don’t mind Wes Anderson, and I liked The Grand Budapest Hotel. But that’s the only one of his I’ve seen. And I understand that his style and aesthetic is definitely not for everyone.

I am pretentious I guess, but my least favorite directors are whose who are really popular, but I dislike their movies.
Like Tarantino or Shyamalan, just can't stand them.
I can't really dislike Michael Bay, since I rarely see anyone actually liking his movies even though I think his movies are shitty.
I am a bit weird with Christopher Nolan, because I think his movies are fun, but not that smart and genius as brofans think. So I am wary of Nolan's fans.
I really dislike Burton, because I liked his movies as a teen, but he is really stale, his movies do not change at all.

Also there are directors whom I hate, but they are local to my country and it's mostly political hatred

Hm...yeah, Christopher Nolan is a competent director who has creative ideas with all of his films, but I don't find him as interesting as his fans do. I like some of his films but they don't appeal to me as heavily, and NGL after "The Dark Knight Rises" I never found much interest in his films again. I thought "Inception" was a really good movie, and then "The Dark Knight Rises" came out and I didn't like it. Between that and the weird culture around his fans, I'm not interested in his films or the discourse around them.

This is kind of weird but maybe...George Lucas? Like, in terms of movies of his where he directed it and I legitimately enjoyed the movie? Like..."Star Wars" is a good movie but I don't recall watching it a lot. I watched "Empire Strikes Back" a whole lot more and he didn't direct that one. I've never watched "American Graffiti". The Star Wars prequels weren't very good, although I like "Revenge of the Sith". I just can't say I hate him as a director or dislike him. He's done so much for cinema with "Star Wars" and I learned a lot about cinema and art in general by watching BTS stuff on Star Wars stuff and even just video essays about Star Wars/George Lucas. LOL And there's a lot I enjoy with all of his films even if the films overall aren't the best.

I can agree about Michael Bay. Every time I went to go watch a Michael Bay movie in theatres it felt like someone held me hostage to watch it with them. My dad took me to go watch "The Rock" I was a kid so I don't remember much. My sister and cousins forced me to go watch "Armageddon" where they all cried and I stared at them like, "This fucking film is such a fucking emotional manipulation. I'm not going to fucking cry because Ben Affleck gets to live, fuck this movie." My friends and I watched "Pearl Harbor" and I only liked it because Josh Hartnett was hot in it. I don't know if I could watch it again now. Any of his other movies I've only seen snippets of, but I recall not liking "Transformers" when I saw parts of it on TNT.

Rob Cohen is the "his movies are shit but you know...they're enjoyable trash when you're in the mood for them (some of them)" director in my life. "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story", "DragonHeart", "Daylight", "The Rat Pack", "The Skulls", "The Fast and the Furios", "xXx", "Stealth", "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (AKA the worst Mummy movie with Brendan Fraiser), "Alex Cross" and "The Boy Next Door".

Coleman Francis. ugh. I've seen three of his movies, all on MST3K and they would be unwatchable in any form other than MST, in fact even the MST versions of them are pretty hard to take.

Roman Polanski on principle even though I've seen only one (maybe two?) of his films, and Xavier Dolan--I've seen three, two that I hated one just ok, and tried two more but noped out of them after maybe ten minutes.
