Ooohh, so SPICY!

(Anonymous) 2022-09-22 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this a controversial take or something? Versions of this could probably apply to anybody who refuses to read/watch/enjoy anything but one particular genre of whatever.

On the other hand the number of people this realistically applies to, who don't read/watch/enjoy anything except one particular genre, is so few it hardly matters.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-22 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely a controversial take, at the very barest minimum because people who read YA will take it as an insult.

Depends in what part of book fandom you are. There is definitely a pretty vocal group (of adults) that goes "Pls rec me books, but ONLY YA" all the time and spout stuff about how YA is so much better about diversity/difficult topics and not just "divorced housewife has to decide between kids and work written by a man" or full of sex + violence like apparently all adult books are. It's a bit bizarre.

I don't feel like I can really psychoanalyze the reasons why people only read YA fiction. It makes no sense to me and I don't think there is a way for me to make it make sense.

I would assume it doesn’t necessarily have to do with their taste in protagonists and is more likely to do with their taste in writing style.

Pretty nonsensically big assumption to make about a bunch of total strangers.

Could be that they're tired or long-term ill. I recently re-read Winnie-the-Pooh for that very reason.

I get what you mean, but I’ve had phases of reading either only very easy books (YA and kids stuff) as well as phases where I read only super challenging stuff (like, historical texts and heavy nonfiction). When I’m in an “easy” phase, it’s usually because I’m burnt out from work or my injury is acting up and I want to unwind. So I don’t begrudge people wanting to take comfort in something fun, nor do I feel like I can assume what their reasons are or that they truly never want to read other stuff. Besides it’s really not a big deal if someone has different preferences as long as they aren’t looking down on mine (which is when I get annoyed).

I think it’s beyond annoying when YA fans act like no other genre has anything to offer. But I don’t care in the end how others spend their free time, or what type of book they read when it comes to reading for pleasure.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-22 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people (adults) are reading YA more than other types of fiction because it's fashionable right now. There was a time when it wasn't.

There are also books that get labeled "YA" that aren't really. Fantasy/SF by women, for example, often gets shelved in YA even when it isn't.

Hate to say it, but I agree because I have never encountered a case where this HASN'T been true.

It's not the *only* thing I read, but I like YA because I'm asexual and YA is much less likely to have random unnecessary explicit sex scenes.

I mostly read YA because there's a lot more of queer sci-fis and fantasy books that just sound appealing to me - that and they're easier to read.

And honestly, I know a lot of adults my own age who don't read anything beyond social media and maybe magazines/articles because they don't find any joy in reading books. I know one woman at work who told me that school made her hate reading because the teaching was just shit, and just prefer movies/shows in her spare time.

Guess most would look down on them for not being intellectual or whatever high farting horse some people choose to be on; but I'm a firm believer that people can do whatever they want in their spare time.

I think people who think adult fiction is all boring domestic drama (which is a reason I’ve heard people give for only reading YA) are incorrect and haven’t read much adult fiction.

I don’t feel a need to analyze people who only read YA though. There are probably lots of different reasons for it.

I've honestly never met they type of reader you're describing. I know adults who read mostly YA, but not anyone who actively refuses to read anything else.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-23 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
nope I read YA bc it keeps me interested more than boring adult novels

(Anonymous) 2022-09-23 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
+1 I can't read most YA nowadays because of the second-hand embarrassment (so much of the stuff I get recommended gives off so much chuuni vibes). The last ones I read were the Cruel Prince and Not Even Bones and I could barely finish them, especially Not Even Bones which came off as pretentious.

Moreover, I don't understand what people mean when they say YA is easier to read. There's plenty of trashy low-brow adult fiction out there that doesn't take much brain power to read. The last two adult books I read were The Exile and the Sorcerer and Yinka, where is your huzband? and neither would considered particulary complex books or literary fiction.

I see this a lot online, but I've never actually met anyone who reads only YA. I love YA, but I also like reading nonfiction history books and fiction books aimed at adults. It's just that, when it comes to fiction, YA tends to have characters from my cultural background that are actually written as people and not stereotypes or as side characters whose only purpose is to teach the main character A Very Important Lesson.

I'm not immune myself. I'm not afraid to admit it. I did have a hard time emotionally maturing as a teen-- I think a lot of us did. I really don't think there's any shame in that.

Largely speaking, people in our general age bracket (mid-20s/mid-30s) grew up in an incredibly weird time where the world changed so much right under our feet (i.e. the birth and absolute explosion of the internet as we know it, technology outpacing itself at breakneck speed, proliferation of information pulling down a few of the curtains that had been up around nasty goings-on in the world, etc.) that it's no shock we find comfort in stopping. Hell, in a lot of cases, it was our parents that did it (intentionally or not) to us, made us afraid to engage with the larger world.

So idk. Yes? In a lot of cases, we read YA because it's an easier fantasy to tap into. If you want to judge about it, feel free I guess, but who is it harming?

For my job, I read a lot of scientific papers, so I just want to read simple things for fun. I like reading why YA because it's a much easier reading style. I think Hunger Games is like a 5th grade reading level and YA doesn't tend to exceed that.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-23 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Caveat — I don’t only read YA

I read YA so I can have intelligent discussions with my students about the books they are reading, and so I can recommend other books they might enjoy if they liked a particular book. It’s not a deep reason, but I believe it is a valid one.

OP, you must have traveled through time to eavesdrop on the coffee break discussion I was having yesterday about how much the whole YA phenomenon gets on my nerves. I feel seen.

I assume that people who judge others by what they like to read are insecure pretentious bungholes trying to make themselves feel superior.
