I actually like badly written characters better sometimes! You can see that potential and then the good writers of fanfic can take it and run with it in a million different ways. It's one of my favorite fandom types.

And I wish more people would understand that "bad writing" is subjective and not everyone is going to agree with you that a character is badly written.

OP, this confused me when you originally posted in the secret making thread and still confuses me: by 'bad', do you mean 'evil' or do you just mean a character that doesn't contribute to the story (or is negative in some other way) but is not badly written per se?

I'm not sure what distinction you're making here.

Unless you mean a character who started out okay, but then started being written differently due to showrunner/writer changeover (or spite-writing by original creator/writer because they don't like how popular the character has gotten).

Because otherwise, all bad characters are badly-written. They are characters, regardless of their backgrounds, it's up to their writers to make them interesting, by word or by deed. A character can be generic AF, but if they get engaging* lines or actions, people will find them appealing (*obligatory caveat that this is subjective).

I think a lot of fans confuse good/bad characters AND well/poorly written characters with "I like this therefore good/well written" and "I don't like this therefore bad/poorly written".

I also see a lot of fans who WANT to like characters saying things like the writers "got them wrong" when writers are following through a consistent line in a character that perhaps isn't fandom's favourite factor, but has always been written into the story or its subtext.

This secret actually sounds like it has that problem and it's therefore quite difficult to understand what it's getting at. But basically, you're doing the same thing as what you're complaining about, OP. 👍

(FTR, I do believe there's a way to qualitatively determine whether or not a character succeeds in a story or is a successful contribution to a story, which is adjacent to being a qualitative 'this is a good character for this story' determiner, but I've never had the time or effort to sit down and parcel it out.

Factually speaking, I don't think it matters at all. We can love bad characters, badly-written characters, evil characters, unsuccesful characters, and everything in between. No need to pit characters against each other. Just enjoy what you enjoy, who gives a fuck.)

Oh! I can relate to the fan art that looks super generic and also wtf why do they both look like Dean or Castiel, I literally cannot tell who is supposed to be who! Like we know what Jensen Ackles looks like! We even know what the Supernatural book series within the show depicts them artistically!

And I'm not even into destiel! I'd just be looking for Dean Fanart! I get there's stylization, but sometimes...smh

I'm not even gonna touch the edits people make. What's your new OTP?

I get irrationally annoyed with like... stylized fanart lol. Like, great, you have your own art style, I love that for you, but if I now can't tell any of the characters apart because your style makes them all look the same is stupidly annoying.

I see this a lot with 'chibi' art.

I feel the same way about fanart for various cdramas I've seen. It's... weird when artists just randomly give characters lighter hair and skin. And before anyone trips over themselves to tell me that fRiEnDlY rEmInDeR sOmE cHiNeSe pEoPlE hAvE lIgHtEr hAiR aNd iT's nOt wHiTeWaShInG sO yOu'Re tHe rEaL rAcIsT I'd like to point out that 1) the live action adaptation version of the character does not have this and 2) neither does the novelization. I don't know where the lighter hair/skin comes from. I'm not even going to try and unpack the blue/green/gray eyes for characters who have brown eyes both in the live action and the novel.

IMO, it is, at best, an unconscious racism where the artist thinks that the majority of characters in a given show having black hair/brown eyes makes them too hard to tell apart and this is how they're choosing to differentiate between different people. But honestly, if your headcanon for a specific character is that they somehow, for some reason have Caucasian features and coloring instead of being 100% Chinese, then... I guess go for it, but own it.

I can't speak to the fanart part of things, 'cause it's not often I see fanart of pairings/characters I like (probably just not looking in the right places), but holy hell, do I very much agree with your rant about makeovers in general. I hate it when people turn a character with some quirky/unusual features into the same ol' buff dude with a six-pack or whatever. No. This character is attractive precisely because of their quirky and unusual features. Not everyone fawns over the stereotypical muscle man. Leave them as they are.

Suikoden is one of my older fandoms and yes the remasters of 1 and 2 are coming out but, lmao thinking anyone is going to get into it now. It's too old and looks like it. We'd need a literal new game and Konami is never giving it to us. You tried, OP, good job, but...
